A Day of Splashing Wonders and Woven Dreams

The eighth day of my Moroccan adventure dawned with a promise of cascading beauty and cultural immersion. Leaving the serene guesthouse, I set out to explore the wonders of the Ourika Valley, eager to witness the famed Ouzoud waterfalls and dive into the heart of Berber artistry. Today was all about embracing the raw, unfiltered beauty of Morocco – a sensory feast that I couldn't wait to share.

My first stop was the Azrou Melloul West Bank. While its name might not immediately conjure images of stunning vistas, it was a lovely spot to pause and take in the morning light as it painted the valley. The air was crisp and clean, a refreshing change from the bustling city of Marrakech. It was a great way to stretch my legs before the main event: the Cascades d'Ouzoud.

The drive to the Sources Cascades Ouzoud was an adventure in itself. The landscape transformed with every turn, from rocky hillsides to lush green valleys dotted with traditional Berber villages. I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation building as we approached the falls. I stopped for a quick breakfast at FEDDAN CAFÉ RESTAURANT. The restaurant was already bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a traditional Moroccan breakfast. I opted for some strong coffee and a flaky pastry, fueling up for the day ahead.

Arriving at the Cascades d'Ouzoud, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the waterfalls. Plunging over 100 meters down the red cliffs, the falls created a thunderous roar that echoed through the valley. The spray from the cascading water created a cool mist, a welcome respite from the warm April sun. The Sources Cascades Ouzoud are truly a sight to behold. The falls are not just one single drop, but a series of cascades that tumble down the cliffside in stages. This creates a mesmerizing effect, as the water dances and shimmers in the sunlight.

I spent a good part of the morning exploring the falls from various vantage points. I followed the winding paths that led down to the base of the cascades, passing by local vendors selling handmade crafts and souvenirs. The air was filled with the aroma of grilled meats and the sound of Berber music, creating a festive atmosphere. I even spotted a few Barbary macaques, the native monkeys of the Atlas Mountains, scampering through the trees.

Lunch at L'Olivier D'or was a delightful experience. The restaurant offered stunning views of the valley, and the menu featured a variety of traditional Moroccan dishes. I opted for a tagine, a slow-cooked stew that is a staple of Moroccan cuisine. The tagine was flavorful and aromatic, and the portion was generous. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring the waterfalls.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at The Carpet Source. Nestled in the heart of the Ourika Valley, this shop is a treasure trove of authentic Moroccan rugs and carpets. I've always admired the intricate designs and vibrant colors of Berber carpets, and I was eager to learn more about the art of rug-making.

Stepping into The Carpet Source was like entering a different world. The walls were adorned with carpets of all shapes and sizes, each one a unique work of art. I learned that each region of Morocco has its own distinct style of carpet, with unique patterns and colors that reflect the local culture and traditions. I was particularly drawn to the Ourika rugs, known for their bold geometric designs and vibrant colors.

I spent hours browsing through the carpets, running my fingers over the soft wool and admiring the intricate details. The staff was patient and helpful, answering all of my questions and offering advice on how to choose the perfect rug. I finally settled on a beautiful Ourika rug with a striking geometric pattern in shades of red, orange, and yellow. It was a bit of a splurge, but I knew that it would be a cherished souvenir of my time in Morocco, a reminder of the beauty and artistry of the Ourika Valley.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Hotel Restaurant Azro for dinner. The restaurant was situated in a tranquil spot overlooking the river, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. I enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled meats and vegetables, savoring the flavors of Morocco one last time before heading back to my accommodation.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that the Ourika Valley had exceeded all of my expectations. The Ouzoud waterfalls were even more magnificent than I had imagined, and the Berber carpets were a true testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the local people. But what truly stood out was the warmth and hospitality of the people I encountered along the way. From the friendly vendors at the waterfalls to the knowledgeable staff at The Carpet Source, everyone I met was eager to share their culture and traditions with me. I felt a deep sense of connection to this place, a feeling that I will carry with me long after I leave.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of the valley, including Ourika Oufla and Terres D'Amanar. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at the Churchill Bar in the evening. For now, though, I'm content to relax and reflect on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and wonder of the Ourika Valley.

This solo journey has been an incredible experience so far, and I'm excited to see what the remaining days have in store. Perhaps Hans and I can return together someday; I know he'd appreciate the stunning landscapes and the opportunity to connect with the local culture. For now, though, I'm enjoying the freedom and solitude of traveling alone, immersing myself in the moment and savoring every experience.
