The fourth day of my Moroccan adventure dawned bright and clear, promising a day filled with natural beauty and cultural immersion. Leaving the bustling sounds of Marrakech behind, I ventured into the Ourika Valley, a verdant paradise nestled in the High Atlas Mountains. Today was all about experiencing the authentic Berber way of life and chasing the famed waterfalls of Setti Fadma.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Yassmine Restaurant & Cafe. The warm Moroccan sun streamed through the windows as I savored traditional msemen – flaky pancakes – accompanied by honey and a steaming glass of mint tea. Energized and ready for the day, I set off towards Setti Fatma, eager to witness the cascading waterfalls I had heard so much about.

The drive itself was a feast for the eyes. The landscape transformed from arid plains to a lush, green valley, dotted with traditional Berber villages clinging to the hillsides. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city. I couldn't resist stopping at a few viewpoints along the way, snapping photos of the picturesque scenery. The contrast between the red earth, the vibrant green fields, and the snow-capped Atlas Mountains in the distance was simply breathtaking. It reminded me of the landscapes back home in Denmark, yet with a distinct Moroccan flair.

Arriving in Setti Fatma, I was immediately drawn into the lively atmosphere. The village was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to explore the famous waterfalls. I decided to hire a local guide to lead me on the hike. He was a friendly Berber man named Hassan, who shared fascinating insights into the local culture and the surrounding flora and fauna. As we started our ascent, Hassan explained that the waterfalls are a series of seven cascades, each more impressive than the last. The hike was challenging at times, with rocky paths and steep inclines, but the stunning views made it all worthwhile.

The sound of rushing water grew louder as we approached the first waterfall. It was a refreshing sight, a cascade of cool water tumbling down the rocks. I couldn't resist purchasing a colorful scarf as a memento of my visit. I always appreciate supporting local artisans; it's a small way to contribute to the community and take home a piece of their culture.

Reaching the highest accessible waterfall was a triumph. The view was simply spectacular. The cascading water created a misty spray that cooled my skin, and the panoramic vista of the valley below was awe-inspiring. I spent some time simply sitting on the rocks, listening to the sounds of nature and feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – to connect with nature, to discover new cultures, and to find serenity in unexpected places.

After the invigorating hike, I was ready for a delicious lunch. Hassan recommended Agdal Ourika, a restaurant known for its traditional Berber cuisine. I settled into a cozy spot with a view of the river and ordered a tagine with chicken and vegetables. The flavors were rich and aromatic, a perfect blend of spices and fresh ingredients. It was a truly satisfying meal, made even better by the stunning surroundings.

In the afternoon, I took some time to explore the local shops in Ourika. La kasbah d'ourika was a treasure trove of local crafts, from intricately woven carpets to handmade pottery. I enjoyed browsing through the stalls, admiring the craftsmanship and chatting with the friendly shopkeepers. Although I didn't buy anything, it was a great opportunity to learn more about the local artistry and the traditions that have been passed down through generations.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the valley, I made my way to Jamila Inn for dinner. The restaurant was charming, with a cozy ambiance and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. I ordered a traditional Moroccan soup and a grilled lamb dish, savoring each bite as I reflected on the day's adventures. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Thinking back to my time in Berlin, I realized how much I missed being surrounded by nature. My work as an urban gardener keeps me connected to the natural world, but there's something truly special about experiencing landscapes as raw and untouched as the Ourika Valley. Perhaps I could bring some of this inspiration back to my projects in Berlin, incorporating more natural elements and creating green spaces that evoke a sense of tranquility and wonder.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Paradis du Safran Maroc, a saffron farm, and I am looking forward to learning more about this precious spice and its role in Moroccan cuisine and culture. I might even stop by Café restaurant elJawhara vert for a refreshing drink.

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had so far. The Ourika Valley has captured my heart with its natural beauty, its vibrant culture, and its warm, welcoming people. It's a place that I will never forget, a place that has reminded me of the importance of slowing down, connecting with nature, and embracing the simple joys of life.

The cool evenings here in April, with temperatures dropping to around 7°C, are a stark contrast to the warmer daytime temperatures of around 20°C. The occasional showers, averaging around 65 mm of precipitation this month, add to the valley's lushness. The weather is perfect for hiking and exploring, and I'm so glad I packed my comfortable walking shoes.

I am also reminded that I forgot my portable phone charger back in Berlin! It is a bit of a hassle, but I will try to find one in the markets tomorrow. I'm also glad I remembered to bring my sunscreen, as the sun can be quite strong, even in April.

The Ourika Valley has truly been an unforgettable experience, a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty. It's a place that I will cherish forever, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
