A Day of Palaces, Prayers, and Parks

Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of history, spirituality, and relaxation. Marrakech continued to enchant me with its layers of culture and surprising pockets of tranquility. From exploring the ruins of a once-grand palace to finding peace in a modern cyber park, the city offered a rich tapestry of experiences that I was eager to share with my family.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Mamounia. The buffet was an extravagant spread, a colorful array of pastries, fruits, and traditional Moroccan dishes. I indulged in some freshly baked bread with local honey, while Fatou enjoyed a custom-made omelet. Ebrima, ever the adventurous one, tried a bit of everything. The elegant setting and impeccable service set a luxurious tone for the day ahead.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to explore the El Badi Palace. The palace, built in the late 16th century by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur to commemorate the victory over the Portuguese, was once a symbol of grandeur and opulence. Today, only ruins remain, but even in its dilapidated state, the palace was impressive. The sheer scale of the complex gave us a sense of its former glory. We wandered through the vast courtyard, imagining the lavish feasts and grand receptions that once took place here. The storks nesting atop the walls added a touch of life to the ancient stones.

As we walked through the ruins, I couldn't help but reflect on the ephemeral nature of power and glory. While non-Muslims are not allowed to enter, we admired its elegant minaret and intricate details from the outside. The call to prayer echoed through the air, a melodic reminder of the city's deep-rooted faith. I watched as locals made their way to the mosque, their faces reflecting a sense of peace and devotion. Although I am not Muslim myself, I always find these moments of public prayer incredibly moving. It's a powerful reminder of the shared humanity that binds us together, regardless of our individual beliefs.

After immersing ourselves in history and spirituality, we sought refuge in the Cyber Park Arsat Moulay Abdesalam. This modern park, a blend of traditional gardens and contemporary technology, offered a welcome respite from the bustling city streets. As its name indicates, it provides free Wi-Fi. The park was originally created in the 18th century by Prince Moulay Abdeslam, but it was opened to the public in 2005. We strolled through the lush greenery, admiring the rose bushes and fountains. Ebrima, of course, was thrilled to find the computer stations and immediately checked his social media. Fatou and I simply enjoyed the tranquility, grateful for a moment of peace amidst the vibrant chaos of Marrakech.

For lunch, we ventured to Chez Ali - Fantasia Marrakech, an experience in itself. The restaurant is known for its immersive dining experience with a traditional Moroccan dinner and a fantasia show. Upon arrival, we were transported to a world of vibrant colors, lively music, and captivating performances. We sat in a traditional Berber tent, adorned with plush cushions and intricate decorations. The atmosphere was electric, filled with anticipation for the evening's entertainment.

The meal began with a steaming bowl of harira, a traditional Moroccan soup, followed by a selection of tagines and couscous. The food was delicious, a symphony of flavors and spices that danced on my palate. Ebrima particularly enjoyed the mechoui, a slow-roasted lamb, while Fatou savored the tagine with prunes and almonds. I appreciated the vegetarian couscous, a flavorful and satisfying dish. Between courses, we were entertained by belly dancers, acrobats, and musicians. The highlight of the evening was the fantasia show, a thrilling display of horsemanship and warrior bravado. Skilled riders, dressed in traditional attire, galloped through the arena, firing rifles in unison. It was a spectacle of skill, courage, and tradition that left us breathless.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Souk Zrabi, the carpet souk. This vibrant marketplace, nestled within the ancient walls of the Medina, is a treasure trove of history and culture. While Fatou and Ebrima were keen on finding the perfect rug to take back home, I was more interested in the history of the place. I learned that Souk Zrabi wasn't always Marrakech's rug market. It was the site of Marrakech's slave auctions until 1912. Today, Souk Zrabi is a bustling carpet market. We wandered through the labyrinthine alleys, marveling at the intricate patterns and vibrant colors of the carpets. The vendors, eager to make a sale, offered us mint tea and shared stories about the origins and meanings of their wares. Despite my initial hesitation, I found myself drawn into the art of haggling, a dance of negotiation and persuasion that is as much a part of the souk experience as the carpets themselves.

Eventually, Fatou found a beautiful Berber carpet with intricate geometric designs, a perfect reminder of our time in Marrakech. Ebrima managed to get a small kilim, perfect for his student room. With our treasures in tow, we made our way back to the riad, exhausted but exhilarated by the day's adventures.

For dinner, we had reservations at Al Fassia Guéliz, a renowned restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine and all-female staff. The restaurant was centrally located in the upscale Gueliz neighborhood. The ambiance was elegant and inviting, with classical decor and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. We were greeted by the maître d', a gracious woman who escorted us to our table. The entire staff was female. I found this fact in itself to be quite remarkable. The menu featured a variety of Moroccan dishes, each prepared with care and attention to detail. I opted for the lamb tangine with prunes and almonds, while Fatou chose the chicken couscous. Ebrima, ever the carnivore, ordered the roasted lamb shoulder, a dish that required pre-ordering 24 hours in advance. The food was exquisite, a testament to the culinary traditions of Morocco. The lamb tangine was tender and flavorful, the prunes adding a touch of sweetness that complemented the savory meat. Fatou's chicken couscous was light and fluffy, the vegetables perfectly cooked and seasoned. Ebrima devoured the roasted lamb shoulder, declaring it the best he had ever tasted.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's experiences. Marrakech had captivated us with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the ancient ruins of El Badi Palace to the tranquil gardens of Cyber Park, from the spiritual atmosphere of Moulay al-Yazid Mosque to the vibrant energy of Souk Zrabi, the city had offered us a rich tapestry of experiences that we would cherish forever. As we prepare for our trip to the Atlas Mountains and Ourika Valley tomorrow, I am filled with anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. I'm particularly looking forward to the SKY-BAR in the evening.

Back at the Riad Dar Massai, sipping mint tea on the terrace, I felt a deep sense of contentment. Marrakech had exceeded all my expectations, offering a sensory feast that nourished my soul. As I looked up at the starlit sky, I knew that this was a journey I would never forget.
