Mountain High in Marrakech

Today's journey took us far from the bustling souks of Marrakech and into the serene embrace of the Atlas Mountains and the Ourika Valley. It was a day of breathtaking landscapes, enriching cultural encounters, and flavors that danced on the palate. Leaving the city behind, the air grew crisper, the scenery more dramatic, and the spirit lighter.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Grande Table Marocaine. The restaurant was very elegant, and the service impeccable. I started with Moroccan mint tea, which was sweet and refreshing. The dining area had a beautiful ambiance, inspired by Moroccan culture. It was a great way to start our day before heading into the mountains. After breakfast, we set off for our adventure, the anticipation building with every kilometer.

The drive to the Atlas Mountains was an experience in itself. The landscape transformed from the flat plains surrounding Marrakech to rolling hills and then to the majestic, snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas. Fatou and Ebrima were captivated by the scenery, constantly pointing out interesting rock formations and Berber villages clinging to the hillsides. We made sure to have the camera ready, capturing the stunning vistas at every opportunity.

Our first major stop was the Ourika Valley. The valley is lush and green, a stark contrast to the arid landscape we had driven through earlier. The Ourika River snaked its way through the valley floor, providing life and sustenance to the many Berber villages that dotted the landscape. The valley was bustling with activity, locals going about their daily lives, and tourists eager to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of the area.

The mountains whisper stories of resilience, the valleys echo with laughter, and the people share a warmth that melts away the chill of the winter air.

We decided to embark on a hike to one of the many waterfalls that cascade down the mountainsides. The trail was rocky and uneven, but the views were more than worth the effort. Along the way, we passed Berber women selling handmade crafts, their faces etched with the wisdom and resilience of generations. Ebrima, ever the social butterfly, struck up a conversation with one of the women, learning about the intricate process of weaving carpets and the significance of the symbols used in their designs.

Reaching the waterfall was a refreshing reward. The cool mist sprayed our faces as we gazed up at the cascading water, the sound of it drowning out the noise of the world. Fatou and I sat on a nearby rock, simply taking in the moment, while Ebrima, ever the adventurous one, climbed closer to the falls, snapping photos with his phone.

For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Casa Lalla. We enjoyed a traditional Moroccan meal with a French twist. The couscous was light and fluffy, the tagine flavorful and aromatic, and the pastilla sweet and savory. The restaurant itself was beautiful, decorated with traditional Moroccan tiles and furnishings. It felt like stepping back in time. The food was excellent and the service was attentive.

After lunch, we continued our journey, making our way to a Berber village nestled high in the mountains. The village was a maze of narrow, winding streets, the houses built of mud and stone blending seamlessly into the landscape. We were invited into a local home, where we were offered mint tea and traditional Moroccan pastries. The family was warm and welcoming, eager to share their culture and way of life with us.

I found myself reflecting on my own upbringing in The Gambia, remembering the strong sense of community and the importance of family. It was a humbling experience, reminding me of the simple joys in life and the importance of human connection. The experience reminded me of the values I grew up with in Kuntaur.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Marrakech, the memories of the day etched in our minds. The Atlas Mountains had cast their spell on us, their beauty and serenity providing a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Back in Marrakech, we decided to end our day with dinner at Le Bistro Arabe. The restaurant was beautiful and fancy, with amazing design and comfortable seating. The vibe was fancy yet easygoing. Soft lights and a warm fireplace made it a great place to eat. The food was delicious, a mix of Moroccan and French cuisine. The service was excellent, and the jazz music created a relaxing atmosphere.

We also decided to stop by the SKY-BAR for a nightcap. The SKY-BAR offered amazing views of the city. The staff was friendly, and the prices were reasonable. It was the perfect way to end our day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Marrakech itself, with visits to the Menara Gardens, Anima Garden, and Agdal Gardens. I am particularly looking forward to the tranquility of the gardens after our adventurous day in the mountains. I am also hoping to find some unique pieces at Marrakech Artisan Jewellery.

Today was more than just a day trip; it was an immersion into a different world, a reminder of the beauty and diversity of our planet, and a testament to the resilience and warmth of the human spirit. It was a day that I will cherish for years to come.

As we prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such incredible places and cultures. Marrakech, you continue to surprise and delight us at every turn.

Perhaps this is why I travel – to learn about worlds beyond my own, and in turn, to learn more about myself. This experience in the Atlas Mountains and Ourika Valley will stay with me for a long time, a reminder that even amidst the world's complexities, there is always beauty and connection to be found.

The day was a great reminder of how important it is to step outside of our comfort zones and explore the world around us. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. It is something that I want to share with my children and grandchildren as well.
