A Breath of Fresh Air in Marrakech

After days spent navigating the vibrant chaos of Marrakech's souks, I was eager to discover the city's more tranquil side. Today was dedicated to exploring the gardens, and I was excited to see what serene beauty awaited. With Fatou and Ebrima by my side, we set out to find some peace amidst the bustling city.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Table Ocre. The restaurant was lovely, offering a delicious Moroccan breakfast that gave us the energy we needed for a day of exploration. I opted for a traditional tagine, while Fatou enjoyed some fresh fruit and yogurt. Ebrima, ever the adventurous one, tried a local pastry he'd never seen before. It was a great start to the day, and I appreciated the restaurant's commitment to using fresh, seasonal ingredients. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes when we got back home to Bielefeld.

First on our list was the Menara Gardens. The gardens are quite expansive, centered around a large reflecting pool and a picturesque pavilion. The pool was originally designed to irrigate the surrounding orchards and gardens. The views of the Atlas Mountains in the distance were stunning, even though the January haze obscured them slightly. We strolled around the perimeter, enjoying the relative quiet compared to the city center. While the gardens were peaceful, they were less lush than I expected, with mostly olive trees providing shade. Still, it was a pleasant escape, and Ebrima enjoyed taking photos of the pavilion reflected in the water.

Next, we ventured to the Anima Garden (André Heller Garden), a more modern and artistic take on the traditional garden. This garden, created by Austrian multimedia artist André Heller, was a complete surprise. Located about 30 kilometers outside Marrakech, the drive itself offered beautiful views of the countryside. The garden was a whimsical wonderland filled with exotic plants and vibrant sculptures. It felt like stepping into a living art installation. We wandered along winding paths, discovering hidden artworks at every turn. The sculptures were quirky and thought-provoking, and the landscaping was meticulously designed. Ebrima was particularly fascinated by the Keith Haring sculptures nestled among the cacti. Fatou loved the fragrant flowers and the overall sense of tranquility. I appreciated the way the garden seamlessly blended art and nature. There was even a charming café where we stopped for mint tea, enjoying the panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains.

Our final garden of the day was the Agdal Gardens. These gardens, much larger than the Menara Gardens, offered a more natural and less manicured landscape. Originally built in the 12th century, they were designed as a royal retreat. The gardens feature a series of large pools used for irrigation and lined with olive and fruit trees. We enjoyed wandering through the shaded pathways, observing the local families picnicking and relaxing. The Agdal Gardens felt more like a park than a formal garden, offering a glimpse into the everyday life of Marrakech residents. It was a great place to unwind and reflect on our day.

Before heading back to our riad, we stopped at Marrakech Artisan Jewellery. Fatou had been wanting to find a special piece of jewelry to remind her of our trip. The shop had a beautiful collection of handcrafted items, and Fatou eventually chose a delicate silver necklace with a Berber design. Ebrima, surprisingly, also found a ring he liked, a simple silver band with a subtle Moroccan pattern. I was happy to support local artisans and to see my family find meaningful souvenirs.

For lunch, we decided to try L'mida Marrakech, a restaurant recommended for its modern take on Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, but we managed to get a table on the rooftop terrace. The views of the Medina were fantastic, and the food was even better. We shared a variety of dishes, including a delicious tagine and some flavorful couscous. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was lively and fun. It was a great way to experience Moroccan cuisine with a contemporary twist. The fresh juices were definitely a highlight.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Dar Essalam for dinner. This restaurant is steeped in history, and I was excited to experience its traditional Moroccan ambiance. The restaurant is located in a beautifully restored riad, with intricate tilework, ornate furnishings, and a serene courtyard. We were seated in one of the opulent dining rooms and treated to a feast of Moroccan delicacies. The couscous was fluffy and flavorful, and the tagines were rich and aromatic. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was magical. Live music and belly dancing added to the enchanting experience. It felt like stepping back in time, and I could imagine Winston Churchill and Alfred Hitchcock enjoying the same ambiance.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Marrakech has to offer beyond its bustling souks and historic landmarks. The gardens provided a welcome respite from the city's intensity, offering a chance to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the landscape. Each garden had its own unique character, from the serene Menara Gardens to the whimsical Anima Garden and the natural Agdal Gardens. The restaurants we visited were equally diverse, showcasing the richness and variety of Moroccan cuisine.

Tomorrow, we're planning on embracing a different kind of adventure with a quad and buggy tour in Palmeraie. Ebrima is especially excited about this. Fatou is a bit more hesitant, but I'm sure she'll enjoy the camel ride we have planned as well. It'll be a day filled with adrenaline and unforgettable landscapes, a perfect contrast to the tranquility of today's garden exploration. I am looking forward to it!

As I prepared for bed, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Marrakech is a city that stimulates all the senses, and I was thankful for the opportunity to immerse myself in its beauty and culture. From the fragrant gardens to the flavorful cuisine, every moment was a feast for the soul. I was also grateful for the chance to share these experiences with my family. Traveling with Fatou and Ebrima always brings a unique perspective to my journeys, and I cherish the memories we create together. As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of vibrant sculptures, fragrant flowers, and the majestic Atlas Mountains, already anticipating the adventures that tomorrow would bring.
