Contrasts of Senegal: Dunes and Wings

Today was a day of stark contrasts, a true testament to the diverse beauty Senegal has to offer. From the tranquil, golden dunes of the Lompoul Desert to the vibrant, bustling wetlands of the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, Fatou, Ebrima and I experienced a sensory overload in the best possible way. It was a day that reminded me why we travel: to witness the unexpected, to learn, and to connect with the world around us.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Reve de Nomade. The traditional Senegalese coffee was just what I needed to kickstart the day, and the fresh fruit provided a sweet start. After breakfast, we packed our essentials and set out to explore the desert around Horizons Lodges Lompoul. The morning air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the sometimes-humid air of Bielefeld. The temperature in Lompoul in June is warm, with average highs of 86°F (30°C), which was perfect for our desert adventure.

The dunes of Lompoul are truly mesmerizing. Unlike the vast, barren deserts I've seen in pictures, Lompoul has a unique charm. The sand is a rich, golden color, and the dunes are relatively small, creating a landscape that feels both intimate and expansive. Ebrima, ever the adventurous one, immediately started climbing the highest dune he could find, while Fatou and I took a more leisurely stroll, enjoying the peace and quiet. I tried my hand at photography, attempting to capture the play of light and shadow on the sand. It's a challenge, but one I enjoy. The vastness of the desert always makes me feel small, a humbling reminder of nature's power.

After our desert exploration, we had lunch at Ecolodge de Lompoul. The restaurant offered a panoramic view of the desert, and the food was delicious. I opted for a traditional Senegalese dish of grilled fish with rice, while Fatou enjoyed a vegetarian couscous. Ebrima, of course, went for the biggest plate of meat he could find. The meal was a welcome break from the sun and sand, and we lingered over our food, enjoying the cool breeze and the stunning scenery.

In the afternoon, we embarked on a journey to the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary. The drive was longer than expected, but the anticipation of seeing the birds kept us going. The landscape gradually changed from desert to lush wetlands, a striking contrast that highlighted the diversity of Senegal. As we approached the sanctuary, we could already hear the cacophony of bird calls, a symphony of nature that was both exciting and overwhelming.

Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important bird sanctuaries in the world. During peak migration season, it hosts over 1.5 million birds, representing over 400 different species. Even in June, which is outside the peak season, the sheer number of birds was astounding. The park is generally open from November to June, so we timed our visit just right.

We opted for a boat tour of the sanctuary, which proved to be the best way to see the birds up close. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, pointing out different species and sharing interesting facts about their behavior and migration patterns. We saw pelicans, flamingos, cormorants, herons, and countless other birds, all coexisting in this vibrant ecosystem. The air was filled with the sound of wings and calls, a constant reminder of the incredible diversity of life. I was particularly impressed by the pelicans, which gathered in massive flocks, their white feathers gleaming in the afternoon sun.

As we glided through the waterways, I couldn't help but reflect on the importance of preserving these natural habitats. Places like Djoudj are vital for the survival of migratory birds, providing them with a safe haven to rest and refuel during their long journeys. It's a reminder that we are all interconnected, and that our actions can have a profound impact on the world around us.

The beauty of Senegal lies not only in its landscapes, but also in its ability to surprise and inspire.

After our boat tour, we stopped by the bar in Lompoul for a refreshing drink. The bar, though simple, had a charm of its own, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. I ordered a Gazelle beer, a local brew, while Fatou opted for a fruit juice. Ebrima, as usual, was glued to his phone, capturing the day's highlights for his social media. It's funny how even in the most remote places, technology manages to find its way in.

Dinner was at DÉMARRER LOMPOUL LODGE, another excellent restaurant in the area. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and the food was delicious. I tried a local specialty, thieboudienne (fish and rice), which was flavorful and satisfying. Fatou and Ebrima both enjoyed their meals as well, and we left feeling full and content.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the incredible diversity of Senegal. In a single day, we had experienced the tranquility of the desert and the vibrancy of the wetlands, two contrasting landscapes that somehow managed to coexist in perfect harmony. It was a day that reminded me of the importance of exploration, of seeking out new experiences, and of appreciating the beauty of the world around us.

One thing I realized I had forgotten to pack was a portable phone charger, which would have been useful during our long day of travel and exploration. I also wished I had brought a sand-resistant beach mat to sit on while enjoying the dunes. These are small details, but they can make a big difference in terms of comfort and convenience.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Lompoul itself and visit Guet ndar, a local fishing village. We'll also be having breakfast at Africa Roots, lunch at Lompoule Sur Mer, and dinner back at Reve de Nomade. And, of course, we'll be sure to check out Wakeur Mame Cheikh, a local shop, for some souvenirs. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family.

This trip has been a wonderful opportunity to connect with my Gambian roots, even though we are in Senegal. The shared culture and history of West Africa are palpable, and it feels good to be back in this part of the world. I am already looking forward to sharing more stories and experiences with you all as our journey continues.

The clear desert air and the absence of light pollution made stargazing an unforgettable experience. Ebrima, who is quite the astronomy enthusiast, pointed out constellations I'd only ever read about. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

The warm days have been ideal for exploring, but the nights do get a bit chilly. Packing layers is definitely a good idea. Also, the sun is intense, so sunscreen and hats are essential. I am glad I remembered to bring those along!

The local people we've encountered have been incredibly welcoming and friendly. Their warmth and hospitality have made this trip even more special. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with new people and cultures.

I am also happy that Fatou is enjoying the trip. As a nurse, she often works long hours, and this vacation is a well-deserved break for her. Seeing her relax and enjoy herself makes me happy. And Ebrima, despite his initial reluctance to disconnect from his digital world, is clearly having a great time as well. Family time is precious, and I am grateful for these moments together.

As I write this, I can hear the distant sound of drums, a rhythmic beat that echoes through the desert night. It's a reminder that even in the quietest of places, there is always music to be found. And with that, I bid you goodnight, and I look forward to sharing more of our Senegalese adventure with you tomorrow.
