Island Lights and Turtle Dreams

As my Yakushima adventure nears its end, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences this island has offered. Today was a blend of coastal exploration and culinary indulgence, a perfect way to soak in the last moments of this solo journey. It's funny how a place so remote can feel so deeply connected to the world, a reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human existence.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Smiley, a cozy cafe overlooking Anbo harbor. I savored a steaming cup of coffee and a freshly baked muffin, enjoying the tranquil view of the water. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration. The cafe's warm atmosphere and friendly staff made me feel right at home, a comforting feeling when you're traveling alone. It reminded me of the small cafes Hans and I frequent in Leipzig, where the simple pleasure of a good coffee and a sweet treat can brighten any morning. Smiley is known for its homemade soups, sandwiches, and cakes, and is located a few minutes walk from Anbo Port.

Fueled up and ready to go, I set off towards the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse, located on the western side of the island. The drive itself was an adventure, with narrow roads winding through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the stunning coastline. As I approached the lighthouse, I could see the white structure standing proudly against the backdrop of the vast ocean.

The Yakushima-todai Lighthouse has been protecting maritime safety since 1897. Although the lighthouse itself is closed to visitors, the surrounding area offers breathtaking views of the coastline. I spent some time simply taking in the scenery, the fresh sea air invigorating my senses. From this vantage point, I could see Kouerrabu Island, the Mishima Islands, and even the mainland of Kyushu faintly in the distance. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to appreciate the raw beauty of nature. I even found a small, hidden shrine near the lighthouse after climbing over a wall.

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.

Next on my itinerary was the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall, a place I had been eagerly anticipating visiting. As someone deeply interested in wildlife and conservation, I was excited to learn more about these incredible creatures. The hall offers an educational experience about sea turtles. The knowledgeable manager provided clear and engaging explanations about their life cycle, nesting habits, and the threats they face. I was particularly moved by the exhibits showcasing the life of loggerhead and green turtles, including adorable two-month-old baby turtles hatched on a local beach.

After immersing myself in the world of sea turtles, my stomach started to rumble, reminding me it was time for lunch. I headed to At Pesca, a restaurant known for its island cuisine. I savored a delicious meal of local seafood, relishing the fresh flavors and the skill with which it was prepared. The restaurant's cozy ambiance and friendly service added to the overall experience. I thought of Kati and how much she would have enjoyed the fresh seafood. I made a mental note to bring her here someday.

With the afternoon sun beginning to mellow, I decided to indulge in some souvenir shopping before dinner. I wanted to find something special to bring back to Hans and Kati, a memento of my Yakushima adventure. I visited the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant, which not only serves delicious food but also offers a variety of unique souvenirs. I browsed through the selection of Yakusugi wooden chopsticks and objects, admiring the craftsmanship and the natural beauty of the wood.

For dinner, I decided to stay at the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. I sampled some of their exquisite specialties, including flying fish ramen and deer tataki. The flavors were bold and unique, a testament to the island's culinary heritage. The great service and delicious food made it a popular choice among tourists.

As the evening drew to a close, I felt a desire to experience Yakushima's nightlife, even if just for a little while. I ventured to Fisherman's Bar NINA, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. The bar was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the camaraderie and the local drinks. I ordered a glass of shochu, a local spirit, and chatted with some of the patrons, learning more about the island's culture and history. Fisherman's Bar Nina is a cool eatery with excellent reviews.

As I sipped my drink, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Yakushima had exceeded all my expectations, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and personal reflection. It was a place that had touched my soul, a place I knew I would never forget.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my Yakushima adventure. My itinerary includes a visit to Senpiro Falls and the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center. I'm looking forward to soaking in the last moments of this enchanting island before heading back to Leipzig. I plan to have breakfast at Yakushima Airport Restaurant, lunch at Kamogawa Restaurant, and a farewell dinner at DINING CAFE BAR SLOW. I also plan to visit Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi.

Even though I am excited to return home to Hans and Kati, a part of me wishes I could stay here forever, immersed in the tranquility and beauty of Yakushima. But I know that the memories and experiences I've gained here will stay with me long after I leave, a constant reminder of the power of nature and the importance of embracing the unknown. Perhaps Hans and I can come back together one day.
