Day 3: A Canyon of Dreams: Discovering Fish River's Majesty
Immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty of Fish River Canyon, Namibia. Explore stunning viewpoints and connect with nature's grandeur.
Whispers of the Canyon
Today was nothing short of breathtaking. As the sun painted the sky with hues of orange and gold, I found myself humbled by the sheer magnitude of the Fish River Canyon. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, where the whispers of the wind carry stories of ancient landscapes and resilient life. Join me as I share the highlights of our day, from stunning viewpoints to unique rock formations.
Our day began with the rising sun, casting long shadows across the rugged terrain. After a simple breakfast at our campsite, we packed our essentials – water, sunscreen, and of course, my trusty camera – and set off to explore the canyon. David, Aina, and I were all eager to see what wonders awaited us. I must admit I was a bit worried about Aina, as she is used to the city life in London, but she has proven to be a real adventure seeker, just like her mom.
Our first stop was the famed Fish River Canyon Viewpoint. As we approached the edge, the view opened up before us like a grand tapestry. The canyon stretched out as far as the eye could see, a labyrinth of rock and shadow carved by the relentless Fish River over millennia. It was truly a sight to behold. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and gratitude for being able to witness such natural beauty. David, ever the historian, shared some interesting facts about the canyon’s formation and its significance to the local communities. Aina, meanwhile, was busy capturing the scene with her camera, determined to preserve the moment forever.

The Fish River Canyon is more than just a geological marvel; it's a testament to the enduring power of nature and a sanctuary for the soul.
After spending a good hour at the main viewpoint, soaking in the panoramic vistas, we decided to venture towards Four Finger Rock. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with the landscape changing at every turn. The ochre earth, dotted with hardy shrubs and the occasional quiver tree, created a stark yet beautiful contrast against the clear blue sky. As we neared the Kooigoedhoogte Pass, the impressive rock tower came into view.

Four Finger Rock, with its four thick pinnacles, stood proudly against the horizon. It's quite a sight, though David joked that it looked more like a cow's udder than fingers! We spent some time taking photos and simply admiring this unique rock formation. The silence was broken only by the occasional chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of city life and reconnect with nature.
For lunch, we drove to The Kokerboom in Rosh Pinah, a charming little restaurant that came highly recommended. The drive itself was quite scenic, and it gave us a chance to see more of the local area. The Kokerboom turned out to be a delightful surprise. The food was delicious, with a distinct Namibian flavor. I tried the local game stew, while David opted for a more familiar steak. Aina, always the adventurous one, went for the mopane worms, a local delicacy. I must admit, I was a bit hesitant to try them, but Aina assured me they were quite tasty. And she was right! They had a unique, earthy flavor that was surprisingly enjoyable.

After lunch, we decided to make a detour to Ai-Ais Hot Springs. It was a bit of a drive, but we figured it would be a good opportunity to relax and rejuvenate after a day of exploring. Plus, I wanted to pick up some souvenirs at the local shop. Ai-Ais, meaning burning water in the Nama language, is a resort built around natural hot springs. The springs are said to have therapeutic properties, especially for rheumatism sufferers. While we didn’t have time for a full spa treatment, we did take a dip in the outdoor pool. The warm, mineral-rich water was incredibly soothing, and it was the perfect way to unwind after a long day.

I also took the opportunity to do some shopping at the Ai-Ais Hot Springs. The shop had a variety of local crafts, souvenirs, and essentials. I picked up a few hand-carved wooden animals for my grandchildren, as well as some locally made jewelry for myself and Aina.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Epata restaurant and accommodation for dinner. We enjoyed a hearty meal as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with vibrant colors. The restaurant had a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. It was the perfect way to end our day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Hell's Corner and Bandage Pass, two more iconic viewpoints along the canyon. I've heard that Hell's Corner offers particularly dramatic views, and I'm eager to see it for myself. We'll also be having breakfast at the Canyon Roadhouse, which I'm told is a must-visit for its quirky decor and delicious food. And if we have time, we might even stop by the Chill n' Grill Bar & Restaurant for a sundowner.
Back at our campsite, as I sit here writing this, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible beauty and serenity of the Fish River Canyon. It’s a place that truly touches the soul, a place where you can disconnect from the world and reconnect with yourself. As I prepare to drift off to sleep under the vast Namibian sky, I feel grateful for this experience and excited for what tomorrow will bring.
For anyone planning a trip to Namibia, the Fish River Canyon is an absolute must-see. Whether you're an avid hiker, a nature lover, or simply someone seeking a bit of peace and quiet, this majestic canyon will leave you spellbound. Just remember to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a sense of adventure!
