Today was a day of sheer, unadulterated awe. The Fish River Canyon continued to reveal its majestic beauty, and I found myself constantly humbled by the vastness and raw power of nature. From challenging hikes to delicious meals, every moment was a testament to the incredible landscape and the resilience of life in this arid region.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Canyon Roadhouse, Gondwana Collection Namibia. I must say, the Canyon Roadhouse is fun, funky and even wacky. It resembles a roadhouse of old and is a veritable treasure-trove. We enjoyed a hearty meal before setting off to explore the canyon further. David opted for the full English breakfast, while Aina and I enjoyed the buffet, making sure to sample some of the local pastries. The quirky décor, with its vintage cars and petrol station memorabilia, certainly set a unique tone for the day.

Fueled up and ready, we drove towards Hell's Corner, a viewpoint I had been particularly eager to see. As we approached, the landscape opened up dramatically, revealing the immense scale of the canyon. It stretches across the southwestern corner of Namibia. I couldn't help but think about the history etched into these rocks, shaped by the Fish River over millions of years.

Reaching Hell's Corner, the view was simply breathtaking. The sharp bend in the canyon, living up to its dramatic name, offered a panoramic vista that seemed to stretch on forever. The play of light and shadow on the canyon walls was mesmerizing, and I spent a good while simply absorbing the scene. Aina, ever the adventurous one, was busy snapping photos from every possible angle, while David, with his historical perspective, mused about the geological forces that had created this wonder.

After Hell's Corner, we decided to tackle the Bandage Pass. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with the gravel road winding through the rugged terrain. I was grateful for our sturdy vehicle as we navigated the sometimes-challenging path. Bandage Pass, I discovered, is a hiker's paradise. The trail was a bit challenging, but the stunning vistas and unique rock formations made it worth every step. The desert colours were mesmerizing, and I felt a deep connection to the raw beauty of Namibia.

We broke for lunch amidst the grandeur of the Fish River Canyon. We had packed sandwiches and drinks. Finding a spot with a stunning view, we enjoyed a simple meal made extraordinary by our surroundings. It was a perfect moment of peace and connection, sharing food and laughter against the backdrop of this ancient landscape.

As the day wound down, we made our way to the Canyon Lodge, Gondwana Collection Namibia, for dinner. The lodge is nestled between rounded granite boulders. The lodge exuded a welcoming atmosphere. We enjoyed a delicious meal, reflecting on the day's adventures and sharing our favorite moments. David was particularly fascinated by the geology of the canyon, while Aina was captivated by the sheer scale of the landscape.

After dinner, we decided to check out the Chill n' Grill Bar & Restaurant for a nightcap. The bar has a relaxed atmosphere and a diverse menu. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking and exploration.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore Vasbyt Bend and the Fishriver Canyon Hangpoint Lookout. We're also planning to have lunch at the Naute Kristall Cellar and Distillery, which should be a unique experience. And perhaps a bit of shopping at Fool's Gold Corner.

As I sit here, writing this entry under the vast Namibian sky, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible journey. The Fish River Canyon is more than just a geological wonder; it's a place that touches the soul, reminding us of the power and beauty of our planet. I am so glad to be sharing this experience with David and Aina, reconnecting with my roots and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

The Fish River Canyon hiking trail is known worldwide. The trail commences at the Seeheim Gate for 85km along the bottom of the canyon to /Ai-/Ais and usually takes 5 days. The canyon walls glow during sunrise and sunset. The canyon stretches across the southwestern corner of Namibia. A newly constructed lookout point dazzles at sunrise and sunset with views over the sharp bend of Hell's Corner. The Fish River Canyon has been shaped and formed by the Fish River for the last 650 million years.
