Family Adventure in the Backwaters of Alleppey
Day 11: Serenity on the Waterways: A Day of Reflection in Alleppey
Experience Alleppey's charm with a serene houseboat journey and spiritual visit to Mount Carmel Cathedral. A day of peace and beauty.
A Day of Gentle Exploration
Today was a day of embracing the gentle pace of life here in Alleppey. After days filled with bustling markets and vibrant streets, it felt right to slow down and absorb the tranquility that this 'Venice of the East' so effortlessly offers. I was excited to experience the famed houseboats and visit a place of worship, seeking a deeper connection with the local culture and finding some peace amidst our family adventure.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cassia Restaurant, Alappuzha. Priya and Aarav were keen to try some local Kerala dishes, so we ordered appam with stew and puttu with kadala curry. I opted for a simple masala dosa, a familiar favourite that always hits the spot. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making our morning even brighter. I remember when I first arrived in Canada, finding comfort in familiar foods helped ease the transition, and it's nice to see my family embracing new culinary experiences with such enthusiasm.
After breakfast, we made our way to the HOUSEBOAT ALAPPUZHA. I had booked a houseboat for the day, a decision I was particularly excited about. The idea of gliding through the backwaters, observing life unfold along the banks, was incredibly appealing. As we stepped onto the boat, we were greeted by the friendly crew who would be our hosts for the day. The houseboat itself was charming, with comfortable seating, a small dining area, and a viewing deck that offered panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The backwaters of Alleppey offer a unique perspective on life, a gentle reminder of the beauty in simplicity.
As the houseboat gently pulled away from the shore, we were immediately enveloped in a world of serenity. The waterways were lined with lush greenery, coconut trees swaying in the breeze, and vibrant water lilies dotting the surface. We passed small villages, where locals were engaged in their daily routines – washing clothes, fishing, and tending to their gardens. Aarav was particularly fascinated by the ducks swimming alongside our boat, their quacking adding a cheerful soundtrack to our journey.
For lunch, we stopped at Aramana Restaurant. This restaurant is known for its authentic Kerala cuisine, and we were eager to sample some of their specialties. We ordered a traditional Kerala thali, which included a variety of dishes such as sambar, avial, thoran, and rice. Priya particularly enjoyed the fish curry, while Aarav couldn't get enough of the crispy chicken wings. I savoured the flavours, reminiscent of my own mother's cooking back in Mauritius, a comforting blend of spices and fresh ingredients.

After our satisfying lunch, we continued our exploration of the backwaters. The afternoon sun cast a golden glow over the landscape, creating a magical atmosphere. We saw fishermen casting their nets, children playing cricket on the riverbanks, and families travelling in small canoes. It was a privilege to witness this way of life, so different from the hustle and bustle of Toronto. I thought about my own journey, from Quartier Militaire to Toronto, and the diverse experiences that have shaped my perspective.
Our next stop was the Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Cathedral. This beautiful cathedral, with its stunning Gothic architecture, stands as a beacon of faith in Alleppey. As we approached, I was struck by its grandeur and serenity. We stepped inside, and I was immediately drawn to the peaceful atmosphere. The stained-glass windows cast colourful patterns on the floor, and the high ceilings and ornate decorations created a sense of awe.

We took some time to explore the cathedral, admiring the intricate details and soaking in the spiritual ambiance. Priya, with her Indian background, appreciated the blending of cultures and the inclusive nature of the place. Aarav, ever curious, asked questions about the various religious figures and symbols. It was a wonderful opportunity to share our different perspectives and learn from each other.
Before heading back to our accommodation, we decided to do a bit of shopping. Kathys clothing store -Alappuzha was ideal. Priya was looking for some traditional Kerala sarees, and Aarav was excited about the prospect of new clothes. The store had a wide variety of options, and Priya quickly found a beautiful saree that she loved. Aarav chose a couple of colourful shirts, eager to show them off to his friends back home. I was happy to see them both find something that resonated with them, a little piece of Alleppey to take back with us.

For dinner, we decided to try Kream Korner, Alappuzha. This restaurant is known for its diverse menu, offering both Indian and Chinese dishes. We ordered a mix of dishes, including chilli chicken, biryani, and noodles. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was lively and fun. It was the perfect way to end our day of gentle exploration and reflection.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. The houseboat journey, the visit to Mount Carmel Cathedral, and the simple act of sharing a meal with my family – these are the moments that make travel so enriching. Alleppey has a way of slowing you down, of inviting you to appreciate the beauty in the everyday. It's a lesson I will carry with me long after we leave.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Alleppey, with a visit to JALAPUSHPAM SPEEDBOATS and Canal Palam. I am looking forward to another day of discovery and adventure, as we continue to immerse ourselves in the culture and beauty of this remarkable place. And perhaps, I'll even find a moment to enjoy a Barbara any time beer in the evening!
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is an annual event held on the Punnamada backwaters of Alappuzha. The popular Vallam Kali is held annually on the second Saturday of August. Boats of different sizes and types compete in the various boat races, where the competition of the Chundan Vallams (snake boats) is the most popular one. This year, it is going to be held on August 16, 2025. This festival commemorates the visit of Jawaharlal Nehru, to Alappuzha.
