Whispers of the Medina

Today, I wandered deeper into the soul of Essaouira, a city that hums with a unique blend of history and artistry. The air was thick with the scent of spices and the sound of seagulls, a constant reminder of the Atlantic's embrace. It was a day of vibrant discoveries, from bustling squares to hidden culinary gems, each experience adding a new layer to my understanding of this captivating coastal town.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Les Alizes Mogador. The restaurant was charming, with traditional Moroccan décor and a warm, inviting atmosphere. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with msemen (buttery flatbread), honey, and mint tea. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. Hans, as always, enjoyed the strong coffee they served, remarking how it reminded him of our favorite café back in Berlin.

With our stomachs full, we set off to Place Moulay Hassan, a square that truly captures the essence of Essaouira. The square was alive with activity. Families strolled, children chased pigeons, and vendors displayed their wares. The energy was infectious. We paused to watch a group of Gnaoua musicians, their rhythmic beats filling the air with a hypnotic pulse. The square is named after Moulay Hassan I, a Sultan of Morocco known for his efforts to modernize the country in the late 19th century.

Essaouira is more than just a destination; it's an experience that awakens the senses and nourishes the soul.

From Place Moulay Hassan, we ventured towards Bab Marrakech Tower. The tower is a striking historical landmark that once served as part of the city's fortifications. As we approached, the intricate designs of the tower came into view, a beautiful backdrop against the clear blue sky. The tower now functions as a cultural center featuring an art gallery within its alcoves and an open-air performance space on its rooftop. We climbed to the top, where we were rewarded with panoramic views of the city and the Atlantic Ocean. I could almost feel the pulse of history beneath my feet, imagining the countless stories this ancient tower could tell.

After soaking in the history at Bab Marrakech Tower, it was time for lunch. We decided to try Restaurant Safran Citron, drawn in by its cozy ambiance and the promise of authentic Moroccan flavors. The restaurant is run by a charming couple. I opted for the tagine, a slow-cooked stew that was bursting with flavor, while Hans chose the grilled fish, fresh from the morning's catch. Every bite was a delight, a testament to the skill and passion of the chef.

With renewed energy, we immersed ourselves in the labyrinthine streets of the medina. We stumbled upon La gazelle d'Essaouira, a shop brimming with handcrafted treasures. From vibrant textiles to intricate woodwork, each item told a story of Moroccan artistry. I couldn't resist purchasing a few souvenirs, small reminders of our time in Essaouira. I bought a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl and a set of intricately carved wooden coasters. Hans found a lovely Berber carpet that he insisted we needed for our living room in Berlin. The shop owner was so kind, sharing stories about the artisans who created each piece.

As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way to Restaurant Baghdad & Cooking Class for dinner. I had heard wonderful things about their cooking classes, but we settled for a delicious dinner instead. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We enjoyed a flavorful couscous dish, savoring the blend of spices and tender vegetables. The food was simple but delicious, a perfect end to a day of culinary exploration.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Essaouira's cultural tapestry with a visit to the Synagogue Slat Lkahal Mogador and the Old Fortress, where 18th-century Portuguese canons stand guard. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Bloody Mary, a local bar, to reflect on our adventures over a refreshing drink.

Essaouira has a certain magic that seeps into your soul. It's a place where the past and present intertwine, where the vibrant culture embraces you at every turn. As I sit here, writing in my journal, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences of today and excited for what tomorrow may bring. I am so grateful I get to share this adventure with Hans. His perspective always adds another layer to the experience.

Exploring Essaouira in late March is a delight. The weather is mild, with plenty of sunshine and a refreshing breeze, making it perfect for strolling through the medina and enjoying the coastal views. The city is also less crowded than in the peak summer months, allowing for a more relaxed and immersive experience.

Essaouira, with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, has left an indelible mark on my heart. It's a place I know I'll return to again and again, each time discovering new layers of its captivating charm.
