Takayama's Treasures Unveiled

Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the art, history, and flavors of Takayama. It's amazing how much this charming town has to offer, from its traditional architecture to its vibrant culinary scene. Hans and I started our day with a hearty breakfast, ready to explore all that Takayama had in store for us.

The morning began with a delightful breakfast at Shiawaseya Kichibei. The traditional Japanese breakfast set was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly cooked rice were a testament to the simple yet exquisite flavors of Japanese cuisine. It reminded me of the breakfasts I used to have with my abuela in Alcalá de Guadaira, Spain, simple and heartwarming.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Hida Takayama Museum of Art. The museum itself is a work of art, designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando. The collection was a bit of a surprise; I wasn't expecting so much Art Nouveau and Art Deco glass. While I typically lean towards more contemporary art, I found myself captivated by the intricate details and delicate craftsmanship of the glassware. Hans, with his engineering mind, was particularly fascinated by the techniques used to create such beautiful objects. The museum had an impressive collection of over 1,500 artworks ranging from ancient to modern Japanese art. We admired everything from medieval Buddha statues and calligraphy to contemporary installations. It's amazing how art can transcend time and culture.

Next on our itinerary was the Yoshijima Traditional House. This beautifully preserved house offered a glimpse into the life of a wealthy sake brewing family during the Meiji era. Built in 1907, the house is a stunning example of traditional Takayama architecture. I was particularly impressed by the massive wooden beams and the intricate joinery, a testament to the skill of the craftsmen of that time. The house also had a serene garden, providing a peaceful oasis in the middle of the town. Hans and I spent a good hour wandering through the house, imagining what life must have been like for the Yoshijima family. The Yoshijima family's history began in 1784 with Shigebei I. The family prospered as sake brewers from generation to generation, a traces of which can still be seen in the large cedar ball that hangs over the entrance to the house. The most spectacular feature of the house is the earthen floor stairwell, where shiny black beams and bunches of wood support thick main pillars and intersect with each other in a three-dimensional structure that looks like a work of art.

For lunch, we headed to Soba Wakimoto, a local soba restaurant known for its handmade noodles and Hida beef dishes. I opted for the cold soba with tempura, while Hans chose the Hida beef soba. The noodles were perfectly chewy, and the tempura was light and crispy. Hans raved about his Hida beef, saying it was some of the best he's ever had. The staff immediately handed us an English menu upon realizing we were tourists. We ordered cold soba, hot soba, and Hida beef. There were plenty of set meals and à la carte options to choose from. Although the restaurant's name includes the word “soba,” it turns out that the Hida beef was the most memorable dish. The beef was incredibly juicy, paired with a special sauce that was both savory and slightly sweet, served alongside warm Japanese rice and stir-fried bean sprouts.

After a satisfying lunch, we took a leisurely stroll through the streets of Takayama, soaking in the atmosphere of this charming town. We popped into a few shops, admiring the local crafts and picking up a few souvenirs. I found a beautiful set of ceramic sake cups that I knew would be perfect for our apartment in Berlin. Hans, of course, was drawn to a shop selling traditional woodworking tools.

As evening approached, we made our way to Gassho, a restaurant specializing in Hida beef cuisine. We decided to treat ourselves to a Hida beef steak dinner. The steak was cooked to perfection, melt-in-your-mouth tender, and incredibly flavorful. It was a true culinary experience, and a fitting end to a day of indulgence. I savored every bite, thinking about how lucky I am to be sharing these experiences with Hans. This tea house is located within the Gero Onsen Gassho Village. You can enter by paying an entrance fee. The nationally designated Important Cultural Property site is a must-see.

To cap off the night, we decided to check out Hidaji, a local bar known for its cozy atmosphere and wide selection of Japanese whiskies. We settled into a corner booth and ordered a couple of glasses of Yamazaki. The bar had a very intimate, almost secretive feel to it. The bartender was a master of his craft, expertly mixing drinks and offering recommendations. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The atmosphere is lovely with a central irori (hearth).

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Takayama. It's a town that has captured my heart, and I know I'll be back someday. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Takayama Jinya and Nezumita-mon Gate. I'm eager to see more of this historic town and continue our journey through Japan. I am also looking forward to visiting the Kodaijin Souvenir Store and finding more treasures to bring back home. Until tomorrow, Takayama!

The day reminded me of why I love to travel – to experience new cultures, taste new flavors, and create memories that will last a lifetime. And, of course, to share those experiences with the one I love. I'm also reminded of the importance of sustainable travel and supporting local businesses, something that Hans and I are committed to on all our adventures. I am glad we remembered our reusable water bottles, but I really wish I had brought my Japanese phrasebook. Oh well, there is always tomorrow!

This evening, I am particularly grateful for Hans's presence. His calm demeanor and curious mind make every experience richer. Whether he's marveling at the architecture of a traditional house or deciphering the intricacies of Japanese whisky, he brings a unique perspective that I truly cherish. I find myself constantly learning from him, and I hope he feels the same way about me. Sometimes, I feel like I am a bit all over the place, and he keeps me grounded.

As I reflect on our day in Takayama, I am struck by the seamless blend of tradition and modernity that defines this charming town. From the meticulously preserved Yoshijima House to the contemporary design of the Hida Takayama Museum of Art, Takayama offers a captivating glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage and its innovative spirit. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, as we continue our exploration of this fascinating country.
