A Day Among Giants
Today was a day of breathtaking views and delightful culinary experiences here in Hardangervidda National Park. The vastness of this place continues to amaze me, and I’m so glad I get to share it with Katarzyna and Zofia. We’ve truly immersed ourselves in the Norwegian landscape, and today was no exception.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Halne Fjellstugu. The cozy atmosphere and the stunning views of the surrounding mountains made it the perfect place to fuel up for our hike. I opted for the continental breakfast, while Katarzyna enjoyed the buffet. Zofia, of course, went straight for the pastries. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. It was a great way to start a day dedicated to exploring the natural beauty of Hardangervidda.

With our bellies full, we set off to conquer Queen Sonja's Panoramic Hiking Trail. The trail is known for its stunning views of the Hardangerfjord, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The weather was perfect, with clear skies and a gentle breeze. As we ascended, the landscape unfolded before us, revealing panoramic vistas of the fjord and the surrounding mountains. I couldn’t help but think about Queen Sonja herself, and how many times she must have walked this very path.

The hike was challenging, but the views were more than worth the effort. Zofia, surprisingly, kept up with us, her little legs pumping with determination. She was especially thrilled when we spotted a few wild reindeer grazing in the distance, a true highlight of our Hardangervidda experience. I made sure to capture as many photos as possible, trying to encapsulate the sheer beauty of the landscape. Katarzyna, ever the practical one, reminded us to stay hydrated and to take breaks when needed.
The beauty of nature is a gift that keeps on giving, especially when shared with family.
After a few hours of hiking, we reached the Freimslia viewpoint. The view from here was simply awe-inspiring, offering a different perspective of the fjords and mountains. We took some time to soak it all in, capturing photos and simply enjoying the moment. It’s moments like these that make our family trips so special, creating memories that we will cherish for years to come. The viewpoint is easily accessible via well-marked trails, making it a great spot for hikers of all levels. We even saw a few families with young children, which was encouraging.

By lunchtime, we were more than ready for a break. We made our way to the Glacier Restaurant, Bar & Cafe in Eidfjord. It was a welcome sight, and we were eager to try some local cuisine. I opted for a traditional Norwegian dish, while Katarzyna decided on a lighter salad. Zofia, predictably, chose the pancakes. The restaurant had a simple, cafe-style ambiance, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The food was fresh and tasty, providing the perfect fuel for the rest of our day.

After lunch, we decided to do some souvenir shopping at the Eidfjord Gift Shop. I was hoping to find a small memento of our trip, while Katarzyna was on the lookout for some traditional Norwegian crafts. Zofia, of course, had her eyes set on a stuffed reindeer. The shop had a wide selection of locally crafted goods, including wool products, wood carvings, and glassware. I ended up buying a hand-carved wooden Viking ship, while Katarzyna found a beautiful wool scarf. Zofia, needless to say, got her stuffed reindeer.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Siderhuset Ola K for dinner. This restaurant is known for combining fine dining with local food and cider, and we were excited to experience it. The setting was stunning, with breathtaking views of the fjord and the surrounding mountains. We started with a cider tasting, sampling a variety of different ciders from the Hardanger region. The staff were knowledgeable and passionate about their craft, explaining the nuances of each cider. For dinner, I chose the mussels, while Katarzyna opted for the shrimp focaccia. Zofia, once again, went for a simpler option. The food was delicious, and the cider pairings were spot on. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tonight, as I sit here in our tent, reflecting on the day’s adventures, I can’t help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore Norway with my family. Hardangervidda National Park has exceeded all of our expectations, and I’m already looking forward to tomorrow’s adventures. We plan to visit the Lake of Tranquility and Skjeggedal, continuing our exploration of this beautiful region. I’m sure there will be more breathtaking views, more delicious food, and more unforgettable memories to be made. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll spot a few more wild reindeer along the way.
Before I turn in for the night, I must mention that I completely forgot to pack a portable solar charger and insect repellent [from TripEssentialsForgotten]. A rookie mistake on my part, and one that I will not be repeating anytime soon.
I am also thinking about accessible travel in Norway. It seems that most cities have good accessibility infrastructure, with ramps, elevators and designated parking spaces. Also, some cruises offer accessible vessels for people with impairments. I will make sure to look into this more for future trips.
Good night from Hardangervidda!
