Day 6: Serenity Found: Reflecting on Hardangervidda's Hidden Gems
Discover Hardangervidda's tranquility: Lake of Tranquility & Skjeggedal unveil serene beauty, completing our family's unforgettable journey.
Day 6: Reflections on Tranquility and Triumphs
As our penultimate day in Hardangervidda National Park draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared as a family. Today was all about embracing the serene beauty of this vast plateau, seeking out hidden gems, and savoring the moments of peace that nature so generously offers. It’s amazing how much you can discover when you slow down and truly appreciate your surroundings.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Stigstuv turisthytte AS. The cozy atmosphere of the cabin, combined with the stunning views of the surrounding landscape, made for a perfect start. Katarzyna enjoyed a traditional Norwegian porridge, while Zofia opted for some delicious pancakes. I, of course, had to have my fill of strong coffee to prepare for the day’s adventures. Stigstuv lies in the middle of Hardangervidda National Park and offers five marked DNT footpaths. This family-run establishment, managed by the fourth and fifth generations of the Myklatun family, is a haven with hiking and fishing opportunities. It was the perfect spot to fuel up before a day of exploration.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off towards our first destination: the Lake of Tranquility. The drive itself was an experience, with the rugged terrain of Hardangervidda unfolding before us. As we approached the lake, the landscape transformed into a scene of utter serenity. The still waters mirrored the sky above, creating a sense of boundless peace. The Lake of Tranquility is located near Dagali, accessible from Route 7, offering a perfect escape into nature's embrace.

We spent a good portion of the morning simply sitting by the lake, soaking in the tranquility. Zofia, ever the curious one, skipped stones across the water, while Katarzyna sketched the landscape in her notebook. I took the opportunity to capture the scene with my camera, trying to freeze this moment in time. It was a welcome change of pace from the more adventurous hikes we've undertaken earlier in the week, allowing us to recharge and reconnect with each other.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are the ones where you simply allow yourself to be present in the moment, surrounded by nature’s beauty.
After our peaceful interlude at the lake, we packed up our things and headed towards Skjeggedal. This name might not ring a bell for everyone, but it’s the starting point for the famous Trolltunga hike. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Marcin, are you going to hike Trolltunga with an 8-year-old?” The answer is no, not this time. The full Trolltunga hike is quite challenging, requiring a full day and a good level of fitness. With Zofia, we decided to explore the area around Skjeggedal, enjoying the views and the unique atmosphere without tackling the strenuous hike itself.

The drive to Skjeggedal was an adventure in itself. The road winds through lush forests and alongside crystal-clear waters, offering breathtaking views of waterfalls cascading down rocky cliffs. Skjeggedalsvegen is a gateway to Norway's stunning landscapes. Even without hiking to Trolltunga, Skjeggedal offers plenty to see and appreciate. We took a short walk along one of the trails, enjoying the panoramic views of the Ringedalsvatnet lake far below. The sheer scale of the landscape was awe-inspiring, reminding us of the raw power and beauty of nature.
We learned that Skjeggedal has three car parks in the area, with restrooms available at the car parks in Skjeggedal or Tyssedal. Filling water bottles is also possible at the car park in Skjeggedal. It's a well-maintained area that provides a starting point for those seeking adventure.
For lunch, we stopped at Hardangerviddahallen. This restaurant and café, located next to the Norwegian Nature Center Hardanger, offers traditional Norwegian cuisine made with fresh, local ingredients. The building itself is constructed from wood and stone, giving it a rustic and authentic feel. Katarzyna and I both opted for the reindeer stew, a local specialty, while Zofia enjoyed a plate of waffles with jam and cream. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning explorations.

The restaurant can accommodate 200 guests and offers a variety of menus, including à la carte, buffet, and catering services. It combines Norwegian food culture and history with fresh ingredients from the district. Hardangerviddahallen is not just a restaurant; it is an experience set against the stunning fjords of Norway.
After lunch, we decided to treat ourselves to something sweet at a local establishment. We found ourselves at Pergola i Odda, a charming bar known for its extensive wine selection and cozy atmosphere. While Katarzyna and I enjoyed a glass of local cider, Zofia was thrilled with her alcohol-free apple juice. It was a delightful way to unwind and soak in the local culture.

As the day drew to a close, we headed back to our campsite, where I prepared a simple but satisfying dinner of grilled sausages and roasted vegetables. As we sat around the campfire, sharing stories and laughter, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Hardangervidda has a lot to offer, from challenging hikes to moments of serene beauty, and I’m so glad we got to experience it together as a family.
Reflecting on our experiences in Hardangervidda, I realize how important it is to embrace both the adventure and the tranquility that nature offers. It's about finding the balance between pushing our limits and taking the time to simply be present in the moment. And it’s about creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Tomorrow marks the final day of our adventure in Hardangervidda National Park, and we plan to make the most of it. Our itinerary includes a visit to Vøringsfoss parkering for a tour to the gorge and the Hardanger Bridge Viewpoint. We'll have breakfast at Halne Fjellstugu, lunch at Dyranut Fjellstova, and a farewell dinner at Glacier Restaurant, Bar & Cafe. Before heading home, we’ll stop by the Gift Shop Norsk Natursenter for some souvenirs.
Before I sign off for the night, I wanted to share a little something I learned today that really resonated with me. It comes from the heart of Hardangervidda:
“The mountains are calling and I must go.” - John Muir
It’s a simple sentiment, but it captures the essence of what draws us to these wild and beautiful places. It’s a reminder that nature has a way of speaking to our souls, inviting us to explore, to discover, and to connect with something larger than ourselves.
So, as we prepare for our final day in Hardangervidda, I carry this thought with me, eager to see what adventures tomorrow will bring. And I hope that you, dear readers, will continue to join us on this journey, as we explore the world and discover the beauty that lies within and around us.
Goodnight from Hardangervidda!
P.S. I almost forgot to mention! While the scenery was breathtaking, I did realize we forgot the insect repellent! Note to self (and to you all): always double-check the essentials, especially when camping in nature!
Join us on a family adventure through Norway's Hardangervidda National Park, experiencing the beauty of nature and the thrill of the great outdoors.
