Day 2: A Day of Tradition and Tranquility: Discovering Shirakawa-go's Soul
Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Shirakawa-go, exploring ancient shrines, wooden walkways, and the heart of Japanese heritage.
Finding Peace in Shirakawa-go's Embrace
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to absorb the essence of Shirakawa-go at my own pace. It's remarkable how a place can feel both ancient and timeless, offering a sense of peace that's hard to find in the hustle and bustle of city life. I woke up this morning with a sense of excitement, eager to delve deeper into the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Andreas and I had a discussion last night, about the importance of taking time to truly appreciate the places we visit, and today, I was determined to do just that.
The day started with a delightful breakfast at Arai. It was a small, unassuming place, and I opted for a simple, traditional Japanese breakfast set [I believe it was called a Teishoku - I'll have to ask Andreas to confirm], which included grilled fish, miso soup, and rice. The perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. It reminded me of some of the breakfasts my Oma used to make, bringing a sense of nostalgia to the start of the day.

My first stop was the heart of the village, 合掌村 Ogimachi. As the largest village in Shirakawa-go, it's home to a remarkable collection of gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are over 250 years old. It was a typical August day, with the sound of cicadas filling the air and the sun beating down. The colourful flora made the whole village so picturesque. I wandered through the village, letting the gentle rhythm of rural life guide my steps.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like a quiet walk through an ancient village.
These unique houses, with their steeply sloped thatched roofs resembling hands clasped in prayer, are designed to withstand the region's heavy snowfall. I took my time to appreciate the intricate details of the architecture and the charm of the local culture. Many of the farmhouses have been converted into museums, restaurants, and shops, offering a glimpse into the traditional rural farm life of Japan. I even spotted a beautiful white Shiba Inu, adding to the idyllic scene. It reminded me a little of our old dog, Max, who Sophie used to adore.
After exploring Ogimachi, I made my way to the Wooden Walkway. Starting from the Shirakawa-go Information Center, it was an easy 10-15 minute walk to reach this captivating attraction. The walkway offered a unique perspective of the village, elevated above the rice paddies and traditional houses. The gentle breeze carried the scent of the surrounding fields, and the panoramic view was simply breathtaking. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to appreciate the beauty of the landscape and the ingenuity of the local architecture. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of this tranquil scene.

From there, I ventured to the Hatotani Hachiman Shrine, one of the oldest places of reverence in Shirakawa. Taking the Nohi Bus from the Shirakawa-go bus terminal, I arrived at the Hatotani bus stop after a short 10-15 minute ride. From there, it was an easy 800-meter walk to the shrine.

The shrine exuded a sense of history and tranquility. Giant cedar trees stood guard, their ancient presence palpable. I took my time to explore the grounds, appreciating the natural features believed to have played a part in ancient nature worship. The shrine's association with Hachiman, the guardian deity of the warrior class, since the sixteenth century added another layer of historical depth to the visit. I found myself reflecting on the spiritual heritage of Japan and the harmony between nature and spirituality that is so central to its culture.
For lunch, I stopped at Zensuke, a local restaurant known for its authentic Shirakawa-go cuisine. I decided to try their Hoba Miso set, a regional specialty featuring miso grilled on a hoba leaf with vegetables and meat. The flavors were rich and complex, and the presentation was beautiful. It was a truly satisfying meal that gave me a taste of the local culinary traditions. I made a mental note to try and recreate this dish back in Bonn for Andreas and Sophie.

In the late afternoon, I decided to treat myself to a local bar experience, and visited Masuzono Bunsuke. This charming spot is known for its traditional Japanese dining and cultural heritage. Although listed as a bar, it's more of a traditional eatery, offering a taste of authentic Japanese flavors.

I savored a selection of seasonal ingredients, expertly prepared with care and attention to detail. The menu featured a variety of set meals, including rice, miso soup, and a range of side dishes that showcased the fresh produce and flavors of Gifu Prefecture. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the locals and fellow travelers.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to Gassho for dinner. This restaurant, situated in a traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouse, offered a truly unique dining experience. I opted for their Kaiseki dinner, a multi-course meal that showcased the best of seasonal ingredients and culinary techniques. Each dish was a work of art, both visually and gastronomically. It was a fitting end to a day of cultural immersion and natural beauty.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, I took a final stroll through the village, admiring the beautifully lit farmhouses against the night sky. The atmosphere was magical, and I felt a deep sense of peace and contentment. As I walked, I couldn't help but think about tomorrow's itinerary. We're planning to visit Midorigaike Pond, Shirakawago Three Houses, and the Nature Forest. I'm particularly excited about exploring the Nature Forest, as I'm always drawn to the tranquility and beauty of natural landscapes. I also plan on visiting the Mamekichi Honpo Shirakawago shop, hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home.
Back at the guesthouse, I reflected on the day's adventures. Shirakawa-go had captured my heart with its timeless beauty and rich cultural heritage. It was a day of quiet exploration, a chance to absorb the essence of this remarkable place. And as I drifted off to sleep, I knew that I would carry the spirit of Shirakawa-go with me wherever I go.
Tomorrow, I am looking forward to visiting Midorigaike Pond, Shirakawago Three Houses and Nature Forest. I am also hoping to do some shopping at Mamekichi Honpo Shirakawago.
