Finding Peace and Unexpected Treasures in Kyoto

Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of ancient serenity and modern-day delights. Hans and I set out to explore some of Kyoto's most renowned spiritual sites, and we stumbled upon a hidden gem that brought a smile to my face. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the unexpected discoveries and the way different facets of a culture can come together in perfect harmony.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Arancino Kyoto. Knowing how much I enjoy a good Italian meal, Hans had booked us a table, and it was the perfect start to a busy day. The restaurant was lovely and the food delicious. I particularly enjoyed the Spaghetti ai Ricci di Mare, it reminded me of the flavors of the sea back in Ouro Preto. After breakfast, we made our way to the Heian Shrine.

The Heian Shrine was truly impressive. The vibrant vermilion architecture against the lush greenery was a sight to behold. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining the emperors and empresses who once walked these grounds. The vast courtyard gave a sense of grandeur, and the serene atmosphere was perfect for a moment of quiet reflection. We wandered through the gardens, admiring the meticulously designed landscapes and the tranquil ponds filled with water lilies. The meticulously designed landscapes transported me to another world. It was easy to see why this shrine is such an important cultural landmark.

Next on our itinerary was the Philosopher's Path. This tranquil walk alongside a canal is known for its serene beauty and connection to the philosopher Nishida Kitaro, who used it for daily meditation. As we strolled along the path, the gentle sound of the water and the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees created a peaceful ambiance. I could see why it was named the Philosopher's Path; it was easy to get lost in thought amidst such tranquility. We passed several small shops and cafes, each with its own unique charm. I made a mental note to return and explore them further. The path was lined with cherry trees, and although the blossoms were long gone, the lush green foliage was equally captivating. It was a perfect way to unwind and connect with nature.

Our walk led us to Nanzen-ji, a Zen temple known for its historical significance and beautiful gardens. The temple grounds were expansive, and we spent a good amount of time exploring the various buildings and sub-temples. The Sanmon gate was particularly impressive, offering a stunning view of the city. We also visited the Hojo, known for its rock garden, which is said to resemble tigers crossing through water. The aqueduct, built during the Meiji era to transport water from Lake Biwa, was a unique and fascinating sight. The blend of traditional temple architecture with this modern engineering marvel was quite striking. I found myself drawn to the serene atmosphere of Nanzen-ji, a place where one could easily find peace and contemplation.

After a morning filled with temples and tranquility, it was time for lunch. Hans had made reservations at The SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO, an Italian restaurant housed in a beautifully restored traditional building. The setting was exquisite, with a charming garden and elegant interior. The food was a delightful fusion of Italian and Japanese flavors, a testament to Kyoto's culinary creativity. I savored every bite, enjoying the ambiance and the company. It was a perfect midday treat.

But the day wasn't over yet. Knowing my love for anime, Hans surprised me with a visit to the Kyoto Station ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store. I had read about it online, but I didn't realize we would have time to go. As a geriatric nurse, I often find myself connecting with younger patients through their interests, and anime is a common one. I was excited to see what treasures we could find. The store was a vibrant explosion of color and characters, featuring merchandise from all of Kyoto Animation's beloved series. I felt like a kid in a candy store, surrounded by familiar faces and stories. I picked up a few souvenirs, including a Violet Evergarden keychain and a set of K-On! postcards. It was a delightful detour from the traditional sites we had visited earlier in the day. I even found a little something to bring back to one of my patients, a small gesture that I knew would bring a smile to their face.

For dinner, we headed to Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store, a restaurant famous for its tonkatsu. The crispy, golden-brown pork cutlets were absolutely delicious, and the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant made it a perfect ending to a long day. We savored every bite, reminiscing about the day's adventures. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. It was a truly satisfying meal.

As we walked back to Hotel Rings Kyoto, I couldn't help but smile. Today had been a perfect representation of what I love about Kyoto – the seamless blend of ancient traditions and modern culture. The serene temples, the tranquil paths, and the unexpected anime treasures had created a day full of unforgettable memories. I was already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, a day trip to Osaka. We plan to visit Osaka Castle, Umeda Sky Building, and Dotonbori. I am particularly excited about Dotonbori. It is a vibrant entertainment district known for its bright lights, street food, and lively atmosphere.

I'm also looking forward to experiencing Osaka's culinary scene, especially the Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki & Teppan-yaki Kamehameha for lunch and French Dining Top of Kyoto for dinner. And perhaps we'll have a nightcap at the Concrete Bar before heading back to Kyoto. I am sure it will be another day filled with new experiences and discoveries. I can't wait to share it all with you on Evendo.

Tonight, as I reflect on our day, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing both the old and the new, the serene and the vibrant. It's in these contrasts that we find the true essence of a place and create memories that will last a lifetime. Until tomorrow, sayonara!
