Fes from Above: A Day of Discovery

Today was all about seeing Fes from a different perspective, literally! After a few days wandering the labyrinthine streets of the Medina, I was eager to gain a broader view of this sprawling, historic city. It turned out to be a day filled with history, breathtaking vistas, and delightful culinary experiences.

My day began, as most do here, with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Ouliya. The warm hospitality and delicious Moroccan fare made for the perfect start. I enjoyed some traditional Moroccan pancakes with a strong coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration. Rachid, the owner, was incredibly welcoming, sharing tips and stories about Fes that added a personal touch to the experience.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to my first destination: the Borj Nord Museum. The crisp morning air and the promise of panoramic views spurred me onward. I decided to walk, soaking in the atmosphere of Fes as I made my way towards the northern hills. The walk itself was an experience, passing through bustling streets and quiet residential areas, each offering a glimpse into the daily life of the Fassi people.

Arriving at Borj Nord, I was immediately struck by the imposing structure of the fortress. Built in the 16th century, it stands as a testament to the city's strategic importance throughout history. As I explored the museum, I was fascinated by the vast collection of weaponry from around the world. Seeing artifacts from so many different countries and eras all in one place was truly impressive. I learned that the fort was strategically built by the Saadi Sultan Ahmed al-Mansur to keep the citizens of Fes el-Bali under control, which gave me a deeper understanding of the city's complex past.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

But the real highlight of Borj Nord was undoubtedly the panoramic view from the rooftop. From this vantage point, the entire city of Fes unfolded before me, a tapestry of rooftops, minarets, and winding alleyways. The Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, looked even more impressive from above, its dense network of streets revealing the intricate layout that has evolved over centuries. The surrounding hills and valleys added to the scenic beauty, creating a vista that was both awe-inspiring and humbling. I spent a good hour simply taking in the view, snapping photos, and reflecting on the rich history that permeated every corner of this ancient city. Hans would have loved this place, with all its historical significance!

Next on my itinerary was the Viewpoint Medina, another spot promising stunning vistas of the city. After descending from Borj Nord, I hopped into a petit taxi and made my way towards this next panoramic location. The drive itself was an adventure, navigating the narrow streets and bustling traffic of Fes. Arriving at the Viewpoint Medina, I was once again rewarded with breathtaking views. From here, I could see the sprawling cityscape, with its countless mosques, madrasas, and traditional houses. The viewpoint offered a different perspective than Borj Nord, providing a closer look at the heart of the Medina and its vibrant energy.

From the Viewpoint Medina, it was a short distance to the Merinide Necropole, my final historical site of the day. This ancient burial ground, dating back to the 14th century, is the final resting place of the Merinid dynasty, who once ruled Morocco. As I wandered through the ruined tombs, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence and awe. The necropolis is a stark reminder of the passage of time and the rise and fall of empires. Despite their ruined state, the tombs still exude a sense of grandeur and mystery, their weathered stones whispering tales of a bygone era.

But the Merinide Necropole offers more than just historical significance; it also boasts some of the most spectacular views of Fes. From this elevated location, I could see the entire city stretching out before me, bathed in the warm afternoon light. The vista was simply stunning, a perfect blend of history and natural beauty. I took my time exploring the site, imagining what it must have been like during the Merinid dynasty, when this necropolis was a place of royal honor and prestige.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I made my way down from the Merinide Necropole and headed back towards the Medina. It was time for a late lunch, and I had heard great things about Cafe Clock, a popular spot known for its innovative cuisine and lively atmosphere. Finding Cafe Clock was an adventure in itself, as it's tucked away in a narrow alley in the heart of the Medina. But the search was well worth it. The cafe is spread over three floors, each with its own unique decor and ambiance. I settled on the rooftop terrace, which offered stunning views of the surrounding Medina. I decided to try their famous camel burger. It was surprisingly delicious, with a unique flavor that I had never experienced before. The fries were also amazing! The staff were friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home. I overheard that Cafe Clock also hosts regular events, such as cooking classes, music performances, and film screenings, making it a hub for cultural exchange and creativity.

With my appetite satisfied and my spirits lifted, I decided to explore the Medina a bit more before dinner. I wandered through the bustling souks, marveling at the colorful displays of spices, textiles, and handicrafts. The air was filled with the sounds of vendors hawking their wares, the scent of fragrant perfumes, and the vibrant energy of the crowd. I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs, including a beautiful handwoven scarf and a set of intricately carved wooden coasters.

As the evening approached, I made my way to Restaurant Darna fes, where I had made a dinner reservation. This restaurant had been recommended to me for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and traditional ambiance. Upon arriving, I was immediately struck by the restaurant's charming decor, with its ornate furnishings, colorful tiles, and soft lighting. I was seated in a cozy corner, surrounded by the sounds of traditional Moroccan music and the aroma of delicious food.

For dinner, I decided to try the tagine, a classic Moroccan dish consisting of slow-cooked meat and vegetables in a flavorful sauce. The tagine was absolutely delicious, with tender meat, perfectly cooked vegetables, and a rich, aromatic sauce. The portion was also generous, leaving me feeling completely satisfied. The service was attentive and friendly, making me feel like a valued guest. Restaurant Darna fes provided a truly authentic Moroccan dining experience, one that I will cherish for years to come.

To cap off my day of exploration, I decided to visit Rooftop Nour Plazza for a nightcap. This rooftop bar offered stunning views of the city, illuminated by the soft glow of streetlights and the twinkling stars above. I ordered a refreshing mint tea and settled into a comfortable lounge chair, soaking in the atmosphere and reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar was lively but not overly crowded, creating a perfect balance of energy and relaxation.

As I sipped my mint tea, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience Fes in such a unique and immersive way. From the historical depths of Borj Nord to the panoramic heights of the Merinide Necropole, from the culinary delights of Cafe Clock to the traditional ambiance of Restaurant Darna fes, today had been a feast for the senses and a journey for the soul. And what better way to end the day than with a nightcap at Rooftop Nour Plazza, gazing out at the glittering cityscape and feeling the cool night air on my skin?

Tomorrow, I'm excited to embark on the Fez-Volubilis tour. I've heard so much about the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, and I can't wait to explore this fascinating historical site and learn more about Morocco's rich and diverse past. I will have breakfast at Restaurant Soultana, lunch at Restaurant MB, and dinner at Restaurant La Cabane. I have no idea what those places are like, but I'm going to find out! I'm sure it will be another day filled with adventure, discovery, and unforgettable experiences. Until then, good night from Fes!

It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel. The chance to immerse myself in a new culture, to explore historical sites, to savor delicious food, and to connect with local people is truly a gift. And as I continue my journey through Morocco, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation for all the adventures that lie ahead. I hope you'll join me as I continue to explore this beautiful and fascinating country.
