Echoes of Empires: A Day Trip to Volubilis and Moulay Idriss

Today's adventure took me and my friends beyond the bustling medina of Fes, into a world where Roman ruins whisper tales of ancient civilizations and sacred cities beckon with spiritual allure. It was a day of contrasts, from the grandeur of a bygone empire to the serene atmosphere of a holy sanctuary.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Soultana. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The Moroccan pastries were amazing, and the mint tea was the perfect pick-me-up.

The main event on today's itinerary was the Fes-Volubilis Tour. Leaving Fes, the landscape transformed from the vibrant city streets to rolling hills dotted with olive groves. The air grew crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers as we approached Volubilis. It was also the day of a partial solar eclipse. I remember seeing the eclipse start during our drive, which was such a unique experience!

Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is an ancient Roman city that was once a thriving metropolis. As I wandered through the ruins, I could almost hear the echoes of Roman life – the bustling marketplace, the lively debates in the basilica, and the laughter of children playing in the streets. The mosaics, remarkably preserved, offered glimpses into the lives and beliefs of the city's inhabitants. Hans, who is always fascinated by engineering, was particularly impressed by the remains of the sophisticated underground heating systems in the baths. Seeing the Triumphal Arch of Caracalla standing proudly against the Moroccan sky was an awe-inspiring sight.

The stones of Volubilis whisper stories of emperors and Berber kings, a testament to the enduring power of history.

After immersing ourselves in Roman history, we journeyed to Moulay Idriss, a town of profound spiritual significance. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Zerhoun, this is considered one of Morocco's holiest cities, named after Moulay Idriss I, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, who brought Islam to Morocco in 789 AD. The city is visually striking, with its white-washed buildings clinging to the hillside.

Although non-Muslims cannot enter the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, the atmosphere of reverence permeated the entire town. As we strolled through the narrow, winding streets, I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. The air was filled with the sounds of prayer and the scent of incense, creating a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant MB back in Fes. The mix of French classics and Moroccan specialties was a culinary delight. I opted for the traditional pigeon pastilla, while Hans enjoyed the ocean roll of shrimp and fish. The presentation was as impressive as the taste.

Reflecting on the day, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness such contrasting yet equally captivating aspects of Morocco's rich heritage. Volubilis offered a glimpse into the grandeur of the Roman Empire, while Moulay Idriss provided a profound insight into the spiritual heart of Morocco.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore more of Fes itself, including Bab Boujloud, Bab Makina Plaza, and Fes El Jdid. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at the Cooperative Artisanal de Fes. I am really looking forward to that!

Before heading to bed, we had dinner at Restaurant La Cabane. After a day of exploring ancient ruins and sacred sites, a casual dinner was exactly what we needed. The pizza was delicious and comforting, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting.

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I'm reminded of how fortunate I am to experience these incredible places with my friends. Each day brings new discoveries and deeper appreciation for the beauty and diversity of Morocco. I'm also grateful for Hans, who always keeps me grounded and reminds me to appreciate the simple things in life. Until tomorrow, dear readers!
