Embracing the Quiet Charms of Shirakawa-go

Today was a day dedicated to soaking in the quieter, more reflective aspects of Shirakawa-go. Leaving behind the bustling viewpoints, I ventured into the heart of local culture and natural beauty, discovering hidden gems that spoke volumes about the region's history and spirit. It’s amazing how much more you can appreciate when you slow down and let the surroundings envelop you.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Keyaki. The traditional Japanese breakfast set was exactly what I needed to energize myself for the day's explorations. The grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly cooked rice were simple but incredibly satisfying. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but think of Hans back in Heidelberg, probably enjoying a simple Brotchen. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes for him when I get back – a little taste of Japan in Germany.

Stepping Back in Time at Myozenji Museum

My first stop was the Myozenji Museum. This museum, housed in a beautifully preserved gassho-zukuri building, offered an intimate glimpse into the lives of the temple monks and the local community. The structure itself was fascinating; everything from the main hall to the monk's living quarters is built in the gassho-zukuri style. I learned that Myozenji Temple has been the main Buddhist sanctuary in Ogimachi since 1748. The building that houses the museum was constructed in 1817 and served as the living quarters for the head priest. It’s now filled with artifacts that showcase traditional life in Shirakawa-go.

Wandering through the exhibits, I was struck by the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people who lived here. The tools and utensils on display, used for farming, silk cultivation, and daily life, told stories of a community deeply connected to the land. I was particularly impressed by the four-level attic, which was mainly used for cultivating silkworms. It was incredible to see the tools and techniques they used, and to imagine the entire process from silkworm to silk. The museum staff were incredibly helpful, sharing stories and answering my questions, making the experience all the more enriching.

The best journey takes you home, even if that home is a feeling you carry within.

One of the most interesting aspects of the museum was learning about the construction of gassho-style houses. Apparently, the foundation and first floor were usually built by professional carpenters, while the villagers would work together to assemble everything above the lattice ceiling. This collaborative effort, known as yui, highlights the strong sense of community that has always been essential to life in Shirakawa-go. I feel that is something we are missing in many modern societies, this spirit of cooperation and mutual support.

Before leaving, I took a moment to appreciate the yew tree planted in 1827 to commemorate the completion of the main hall. This tree, designated as a Natural Monument of Gifu Prefecture, stands as a silent witness to the passage of time and the enduring spirit of Shirakawa-go. I also learned that the building is unique because it has plastered earthen walls, making it more fire-resistant than other buildings in the area. Given the thatched roofs, fire prevention was a serious concern, and this was a clever way to address it.

A Tranquil Escape to Midorigaike Pond

After immersing myself in history and culture, I decided to embrace nature with a visit to Midorigaike Pond. Getting there involved a bus ride to the Hirase bus stop, followed by a twenty-minute walk. But the journey was well worth it. As I approached the pond, I was immediately struck by its serene beauty. The emerald-green waters, surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills, created a scene of perfect tranquility.

I took a leisurely walk along the path that encircles the pond, stopping frequently to soak in the views. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the sounds of birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves. It was a perfect spot for reflection, and I spent some time simply sitting by the water's edge, watching the sunlight dance on the surface. I read that the pond's vibrant color is due to the unique mineral composition of the water and the surrounding soil. Whatever the reason, it was truly mesmerizing.

Midorigaike Pond is also known for its seasonal beauty. I can only imagine how stunning it must be in the autumn when the surrounding forests are ablaze with color. I made a mental note to try and visit again during that time, perhaps with Hans. He would love the tranquility and the opportunity to capture some amazing photographs.

Lunch and Local Crafts

By now, I had worked up quite an appetite, so I headed to Yamamotoya for lunch. This restaurant is known for its authentic soba noodles, and I was eager to try them. I ordered a bowl of their signature soba with tempura, and it was absolutely delicious. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the tempura was light and crispy. It was the perfect fuel for the rest of my day.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Kobikiya, a local shop known for its bean confectionery and Hida pickles. I sampled a variety of their offerings, from sweet beans to spicy pickles, and ended up buying a selection to take back home as gifts. I also picked up a small Kinu Temari, an original folk craft with a Sarubobo inside, as a souvenir for myself. I thought it would be a nice reminder of my time in Shirakawa-go.

Dinner and Reflections

As evening approached, I made my way to Kita no Sho for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Japanese cuisine, and I was looking forward to experiencing another culinary delight. I opted for a multi-course meal that included local specialties like Hida beef and wild vegetables. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. It was a fitting end to a day of cultural immersion and natural beauty.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had come to appreciate the simple, unhurried pace of life in Shirakawa-go. It was a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of Heidelberg, and I felt a sense of peace and tranquility that I hadn't experienced in a long time. I was also struck by the strong sense of community that permeates every aspect of life here, from the collaborative construction of gassho-zukuri houses to the warm hospitality of the locals.

As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include visiting Hatotani Hachiman Shrine and the Wooden Walkway, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique and special place. I am also looking forward to trying some local sake at Gassho bar tomorrow night.

Shirakawa-go has a way of getting under your skin, of reminding you of the importance of connection, tradition, and living in harmony with nature. It's an experience I will cherish long after I leave, and one that I hope to share with Hans someday soon.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of the cultural sites and perhaps even enjoy a drink at a local bar. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems Shirakawa-go has in store for me!
