Echoes of Emperors Past

Today, I found myself transported back in time as I explored the heart of Hue's imperial history. The Citadel, a sprawling complex of palaces, temples, and walls, whispered stories of emperors and dynasties long gone. It was a day of immersing myself in the rich cultural tapestry of Vietnam, and I'm eager to share every moment.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Maison Trang. It's such a cute place, tucked away in a small alley, a peaceful corner in dreamy Hue. The restaurant had a warm ambiance, with traditional decor that made me feel right at home. I opted for one of their vegetarian set meals, which was plentiful and tasted very fresh. The staff were incredibly friendly, ensuring my meal was vegan. Starting the day with such a delightful meal set the perfect tone for the adventures ahead.

Fueled and ready, I made my way to the Hue Historic Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As I approached the Citadel, the sheer scale of the complex was astounding. The massive walls, stretching for kilometers, hinted at the power and importance this place once held. Entering through the main gate, I was immediately struck by the intricate architecture and the sense of history that permeated the air. The Citadel is vast, and I knew I could easily spend hours wandering through its many courtyards, palaces, and temples.

The Citadel is more than just a collection of buildings; it's a living testament to Vietnam's rich and complex past.

My first stop was the Flag Tower, also known as the King's Knight, which stands proudly as a symbol of Vietnam's imperial heritage. The Flag Tower was built in 1807 during the reign of Emperor Gia Long. The tower has three flat-top pyramidal platforms arranged in descending order. Originally made of wood, the flagpole has been replaced several times, now boasting a steel-core flagpole installed in 1948. Standing beneath it, gazing up at the Vietnamese flag fluttering in the breeze, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for the generations who had fought to protect this land.

Wandering deeper into the Citadel, I found myself lost in a maze of ornate gates and tranquil gardens. Each building seemed to have its own story to tell, from the grand Thai Hoa Palace, the emperor's throne room used for important state ceremonies , to the more intimate living quarters of the royal family. I was particularly struck by the intricate details of the carvings and decorations, each one a testament to the skill and artistry of the craftsmen who had created them. It's amazing to think that much of the complex was damaged in the 20th century wars, but still remains a worthwhile destination for any Vietnam tour.

By lunchtime, I had worked up quite an appetite, so I ventured out of the Citadel in search of Quán Hạnh. Quán Hạnh is known for classic Vietnamese dishes cooked in the local style. Luckily, the restaurant was just a short cyclo ride away. I decided to try one of their set menus, which offered a sampling of Hue's regional delicacies. The staff were incredibly kind and took the time to explain each dish, even showing me how to prepare and eat them properly. From the bánh bèo (small steamed rice cakes) to the nem lụi (grilled pork skewers), every bite was a burst of flavor.

After lunch, I decided to take a break from sightseeing and explore some of Hue's more modern offerings. I had heard about the RoofTop Lounge Hue and thought it would be the perfect place to relax and enjoy a panoramic view of the city. The lounge had a laid-back vibe, with comfortable seating and a wide selection of drinks. I ordered a refreshing cocktail and settled in to watch the sunset over the Perfume River. Sipping my drink, I reflected on the day's adventures.

The blend of old and new, of ancient history and modern life, is what makes Hue so special. As I watched the city lights twinkle on, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this unique corner of the world. It reminded me a bit of the Long Bar at Raffles Singapore, where the Singapore Sling was invented. Just as that iconic bar captures the essence of Singapore, RoofTop Lounge Hue offers a taste of modern Hue, with its own unique charm and character.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Mausoleum of Emperor Minh Mang and Thái Hòa Palace. I'm also hoping to visit the Gia Huy Silk Tailor shop to pick up a souvenir. But for now, I'm content to soak in the atmosphere of this enchanting city and dream of the adventures to come. I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon this hidden gem, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Before heading back to the Alba Spa Hotel, I took one last look at the Citadel, bathed in the soft glow of the moonlight. The ancient walls seemed to whisper secrets of emperors and dynasties, of battles fought and won, of a culture that has endured for centuries. As I walked away, I knew that this day would forever be etched in my memory, a reminder of the beauty and resilience of the human spirit.

I'm finding that traveling solo gives me the chance to fully immerse myself in the experience, to wander off the beaten path and discover hidden gems that I might otherwise have missed. And while I miss Hans, I know he would be proud of me for embracing this adventure and for sharing my experiences with all of you. Good night from Hue!
