Day 8: A Day of Emperors and Elegance in Hue
Exploring the majestic Mausoleum of Emperor Minh Mang and the Thái Hòa Palace, with delightful local cuisine and silk tailoring.
Echoes of Emperors and Silk Threads
Today was a journey back in time, a deep dive into the heart of Vietnam's imperial past. From the serene landscapes of royal tombs to the intricate beauty of ancient palaces, Hue unfolded yet another layer of its captivating story. It was a day of reflection, appreciation, and a touch of retail therapy, perfectly blending history with the present.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Le Rendez-vous. Fuelled by a strong Vietnamese coffee and a tasty pastry, I set off to explore the Mausoleum of Emperor Minh Mang. The taxi ride itself was a scenic prelude, the countryside gradually revealing the grandeur that awaited. As we drove, I couldn't help but reflect on the emperors of old, their lives shrouded in both power and isolation. I was eager to see where one of them would rest for eternity.
The Mausoleum of Emperor Minh Mang is an architectural marvel, a sprawling complex of temples, gardens, and lakes designed to reflect the emperor's vision of the cosmos. The scale of the place is simply breathtaking, each structure meticulously placed to create a sense of harmony and balance. I wandered through the Bai Dinh Yard and marveled at the vibrant colors of the stele house. The Hieu Duc Mon Gate and Sung An Temple exuded a holy atmosphere. The air was thick with history, and I could almost hear the whispers of the past echoing through the courtyards. The Tan Nguyet Lake was especially enchanting, its crescent shape embracing the sun, a symbol of transformation and progress. I spent a good few hours wandering around, snapping photos and trying to absorb the sheer magnificence of the place. It was easy to see why this mausoleum is considered one of the most beautiful and well-preserved royal tombs in Vietnam.
The Mausoleum of Emperor Minh Mang is not just a tomb, but a testament to the emperor's vision, a harmonious blend of nature and architecture that transcends time.

Leaving the mausoleum, I headed back towards the city center, my next stop being the Thái Hòa Palace. Located within the Imperial City, this palace was once the heart of the Nguyen Dynasty, the place where emperors held court and conducted affairs of state. Walking through the Ngo Mon Gate, the main entrance to the Imperial Enclosure, I felt a sense of awe wash over me. The palace itself is a vast hall, its ornate timber roof supported by eighty intricately carved and lacquered columns. It was easy to imagine the emperors sitting on their elevated thrones, receiving visitors and presiding over grand ceremonies. The palace is modeled on the Taihe Dian in Beijing's Forbidden City, offering a glimpse into the architectural influences of the time.

After immersing myself in royal history, my stomach started to rumble, reminding me that it was lunchtime. I decided to try Nhà hàng Le Parfum, located in the Azerai La Residence Hotel. The restaurant is set in a beautiful colonial-style building, and I managed to snag a table on the terrace overlooking the Perfume River. The view was stunning, the gentle breeze adding to the relaxing atmosphere. I opted for a Vietnamese specialty, a flavorful noodle soup that was both comforting and delicious. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and friendly. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge before continuing my exploration of Hue. I savored every bite, thinking of Hans back in Heidelberg and promising myself to try and recreate this dish for him when I got back.

With renewed energy, I decided to indulge in a little retail therapy. I had heard great things about Gia Huy Silk Tailor shop, and I was keen to see what they had to offer. The shop was easy to find, and I was immediately struck by the array of colorful fabrics on display. The staff were incredibly helpful, guiding me through the different types of silk and offering suggestions based on my preferences. I ended up commissioning a custom-made dress, a vibrant silk number that I knew would be perfect for summer evenings back in Germany. The prices were reasonable, and I was impressed by the speed and professionalism of the tailors. I can't wait to see the finished product!

As the sun began to set, I made my way to the Banana Flower Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant is known for its appealing ambiance and contemporary interior design. I was seated on the top floor, which offered a remarkable view of the city. Although there wasn't a performance that evening, I enjoyed admiring the Chinese cultural garments and props that were discreetly arranged around the emperor stage. The food was generally favorable, although I found the fish dish to be a little too salty. Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience, the friendly atmosphere and quality food making it a worthwhile visit.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Truong Tien Bridge and the Thanh Toàn Bridge, followed by a relaxing evening at the Century Beer Garden. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the Truong Tien Bridge, as I have heard it is especially beautiful at night when it is lit up. But for now, I'm content to reflect on another wonderful day in Hue, a city that continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It's amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day. I feel so grateful for this opportunity to explore this beautiful country and share my experiences with you all.
And as I sit here, sipping on a cup of tea, I'm reminded of something my grandmother used to say:
The best journeys are those that take you not only to new places, but also back in time.
And Hue, with its ancient tombs and palaces, has certainly done that for me.
Good night from Hue! Tomorrow I will be back with more to share!
P.S. I really need to remember to buy sunscreen! My fair German skin is starting to feel the burn, even in October!
