Solo Adventure Through the Historic Streets of Hue
Day 6: A Day of Royal Echoes and Spiritual Calm in Hue
Discover the heart of Hue with a visit to royal antiquities and serene temples, complemented by delicious local cuisine.
Whispers of Emperors and Ancient Serenity
Today in Hue was a beautiful blend of history, art, and spiritual reflection. It’s amazing how much you can absorb in a single day when you open yourself up to the experiences around you. From the intricate artifacts of a bygone era to the tranquil grounds of an ancient temple, Hue continues to reveal its layers, and I’m here to capture every moment.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at La Paix Bistro. It’s funny, I’ve found that starting the day with a taste of French urban style in the heart of Vietnam adds a certain *je ne sais quoi* to the adventures that follow. The bistro is located on a bustling street, offering both indoor and outdoor seating. I opted for a table outside, enjoying my meal while watching the city slowly awaken. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the breakfast combo was both filling and delicious, providing the perfect fuel for a day of exploration.

First on the itinerary was the Hue Museum of Royal Antiquities. As someone who appreciates the stories objects can tell, I was eager to explore this treasure trove of Nguyen Dynasty artifacts. The museum is housed in Long An Palace, a beautiful timber structure with 128 precious timber pillars. The architecture alone is worth the visit, but the collection inside is truly captivating.

Wandering through the halls, I was struck by the artistry and craftsmanship of the royal objects. From the golden throne to the intricate royal costumes, each piece offered a glimpse into the lives of the emperors and empresses who once ruled Vietnam. There were ceramics from all over the world including France, Japan, and the UK. It's amazing to see how Hue has been a cultural melting pot for centuries. I was particularly impressed by the 'Bleu de Hue' porcelain, a delicate blue-glazed pottery that seemed to glow with an ethereal light.
Museums are not merely places to store artifacts; they are spaces where history comes alive, inviting us to connect with the past and understand the present.
After immersing myself in royal history, it was time for a change of pace. I made my way to the Bao Quoc Temple, a serene Buddhist temple nestled on Ham Long Hill. Founded in 1670 by a Chinese Zen Master, the temple has a rich history, serving as one of the three national temples of Hue during the Nguyen Dynasty. The temple is located on a spacious campus, with a three-door gate. As I walked through the temple grounds, I was enveloped in a sense of tranquility. The gardens were lush and green, with ancient trees providing shade and a sense of peace.

I spent some time sitting by the Ham Long well, a historic well with pure, fresh water that has been used for centuries in temple rituals. It’s said that the well was once a geyser, adding to its mystique and sacredness. The main temple hall was equally impressive, with ancient Buddha statues and intricate dragon carvings on the pillars.
For lunch, I ventured to Nina's Cafe-Vietnamese Restaurant, a hidden gem tucked away in a little alley. The cafe is known for its traditional Hue dishes and exceptional service. I ordered a selection of local specialties, and Y, one of the servers, took the time to explain how to eat each dish properly. It was a wonderful culinary experience, made even better by the friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping. I visited Shop Hue Silk, hoping to find a special souvenir to bring back home to Hans. I was hoping to find some 'So Silky Sheer' gloss pantyhose, but I had no such luck. The shop had an array of beautiful silk products, from clothing to accessories to home goods. I ended up purchasing a lovely silk scarf with intricate embroidery, a perfect reminder of my time in Hue. The shop assistants were really helpful and gave me some tips to distinguish real silk from fakes.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Family Home Cafe & Restaurant for dinner. This charming eatery is known for its inviting ambiance and authentic Vietnamese dishes. I ordered the Banh Xeo (Vietnamese pancakes), which were cooked to perfection. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making me feel like a part of their family.

Before heading back to the Alba Spa Hotel, I took a leisurely stroll along the Perfume River. The city was bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, and the air was filled with the sounds of evening activities. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Hue had revealed another layer of its charm, and I was eager to see what tomorrow would bring.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Hue Historic Citadel and the Flag Tower. I'm particularly excited to explore the Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site that once served as the imperial capital of Vietnam. I also intend to visit the RoofTop Lounge Hue for a drink [before dinner], as I am keen to experience Hue's nightlife.
Back at the hotel, I enjoyed a relaxing spa treatment, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration. As I reflect on my experiences, I am reminded of why I love solo travel so much. It allows me to fully immerse myself in the local culture, to connect with people on a deeper level, and to discover hidden gems that I might otherwise miss.
