Chasing Horizons and Lagoon Dreams
Today was a day of breathtaking vistas and serene waters, a true feast for the senses here in Hue. I set out to explore beyond the city's historical heart, eager to discover the natural beauty that surrounds it. It's days like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to chase every whim and linger in every moment.
My morning began, as most mornings here have, with a delightful breakfast at Cozy Restaurant. I opted for a steaming bowl of Pho, a Vietnamese staple that never fails to invigorate me for the day ahead. Fueled and ready, I hopped on my rented motorbike and set off towards Vong Canh Hill. The ride itself was a pleasure, the air crisp and cool against my skin as I navigated the quiet roads leading out of the city. The landscape gradually transformed from urban bustle to lush greenery, a welcome change that signaled my arrival at the hill. Vong Canh Hill, I discovered, is known as the 'divine eye of Hue', and I could see why.

The climb to the top was gentle, and soon I was rewarded with a panoramic view of Hue that stretched as far as the eye could see. The Perfume River snaked its way through the landscape, shimmering under the morning sun, with the Nguyen Dynasty Tombs and ancient temples dotting the horizon. It was a truly breathtaking sight, and I spent a good hour simply soaking it all in, snapping photos, and committing the scene to memory. I even explored some of the historical bunkers that were left from the times this hill served as a military base. There was something profoundly peaceful about being up there, away from the noise and crowds, just me and the vast expanse of Vietnam stretching out before me.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest corners of the world.
After descending from Vong Canh Hill, I felt a pull towards the water, a longing for the tranquility I had glimpsed from above. My destination: Tam Giang Lagoon, the largest lagoon in Southeast Asia. The drive there took me through more rural landscapes, past rice paddies and small villages where life seemed to move at a slower, more deliberate pace. When I arrived at the lagoon, I was immediately struck by its vastness. The water stretched out before me, meeting the horizon in a seamless blend of blue and sky. I decided to take a boat tour to fully experience the lagoon's beauty. The boat glided silently across the water, allowing me to soak in the serene atmosphere. Fishing villages dotted the shoreline, and I could see locals going about their daily lives, casting nets and tending to their boats.

The guide shared stories about the lagoon's history and its importance to the local economy, explaining how it is a rich source of flora and fauna. He pointed out different species of birds and aquatic plants, and I even got to try my hand at casting a fishing net, though with little success. The highlight of the boat tour was undoubtedly the sunset. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, the sky exploded with color, painting the lagoon in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a magical moment, one that I shared with a few other travelers on the boat, but which felt deeply personal nonetheless. The experience was so captivating that I almost forgot about my sunscreen and portable phone charger back at the hotel! I made a mental note to be more prepared tomorrow.
Before heading back to the hotel, I made a stop at Bleu de Hue, a shop known for its beautiful Chinese blue and white porcelain. I've always been drawn to ceramics, a passion I probably picked up from my mother, who always had a collection of handmade pottery from our hometown of Ouro Preto. The shop was filled with intricate designs and unique pieces, and I couldn't resist purchasing a small bowl as a memento of my time in Hue. I even had a brief chat with the owner, who showed me some pieces upstairs. While some reviewers online have mentioned issues with card payments and receipts, I found the owner to be very kind. I didn’t experience any rudeness, as other reviewers have mentioned.

For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at Tinh Gia Vien Restaurant, known for its traditional Hue cuisine. The restaurant was set in a beautiful garden, and the atmosphere was both elegant and relaxed. I ordered a selection of local specialties, including Banh Beo and Nem Lui, savoring each bite and reflecting on the day's adventures. I thought of Hans back in Heidelberg and wished he could have been here to share this experience with me. Perhaps one day we can return together.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post from the comfort of my room at the Alba Spa Hotel, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had today. Hue continues to surprise and delight me at every turn, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Chùa Từ Hiếu temple and the Elephant Springs, and perhaps end the day with a craft beer at The Chàm Craft Beer and Whisky. Good night from Hue!
