Solo Adventure Through the Historic Streets of Hue
Day 9: Bridges of Hue: A Journey Through Time and Tradition
Discover the historical bridges of Hue, Vietnam, and their cultural significance on a captivating solo exploration.
Bridging the Past
Today was all about connections – both literal and metaphorical. I set out to explore two of Hue's most iconic bridges, each a testament to the city's rich history and enduring spirit. It’s amazing how a simple structure can tell so many stories, reflecting the culture, challenges, and triumphs of a place.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Little Italy Restaurant - Nhà hàng Ý. I know, I know, Italian in Vietnam? But sometimes, a girl just needs a taste of home, or at least, something familiar. Fueled by a delicious cappuccino and a flaky pastry, I was ready to embark on my bridge-hunting adventure. The weather in Hue this October has been a bit unpredictable, with warm days and occasional showers. Fortunately, today was relatively dry, perfect for exploring.
First on the itinerary was the famed Truong Tien Bridge. As I approached, its elegant arches came into view, spanning gracefully across the Perfume River. It’s hard to believe this bridge has been standing here since the late 19th century! I learned that it was designed by Gustave Eiffel's company, the same genius behind the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Knowing that tidbit made me feel a little closer to home, a little closer to Europe, even here in the heart of Vietnam. The bridge has a Gothic architectural style with six steel arches.
Walking across Truong Tien Bridge, I couldn't help but imagine all the people who had crossed it before me – soldiers, merchants, lovers, and everyday citizens going about their lives. The bridge has witnessed so much history, surviving wars and natural disasters, becoming a symbol of Hue's resilience. It has been called multiple names over the years.
I took my time, stopping to admire the views of the Perfume River and the city skyline. The colorful buildings and lush greenery created a beautiful panorama, and I snapped a few photos to capture the moment. The bridge is more than just a means of crossing the river; it's a place to pause, reflect, and soak in the beauty of Hue. The bridge is 403 meters long and 6 meters wide.

After exploring Truong Tien Bridge, I was ready for lunch. I headed to Nhà Hàng Spice Việt Huế, a local restaurant known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. I ordered a bowl of Bun Bo Hue, the city's signature dish, a spicy and flavorful noodle soup with beef. It was absolutely delicious, and the perfect way to refuel after my morning walk. It’s funny, I never thought I’d develop such a fondness for spicy food, but Vietnam has definitely changed my palate.
A bridge not only connects places but also people and their stories, weaving a tapestry of shared experiences across time.
With a full stomach and a renewed sense of energy, I set off to my next destination: Thanh Toàn Bridge. Located a bit further from the city center, in a tranquil rural area, this bridge offered a completely different experience. As I drove through the countryside, I was struck by the beauty of the landscape – rice paddies, water buffalos, and small villages dotted the horizon. It was a world away from the bustling city, and I felt a sense of peace and serenity wash over me.
Thanh Toàn Bridge is a covered bridge, built in the 18th century. It was constructed thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Tran Thi Dao, who wanted to help the villagers cross the canal more easily. The bridge has seven compartments, with a roof covered in glazed tube tiles. It’s a unique architectural gem, blending history, architecture, and local traditions.

As I walked across Thanh Toàn Bridge, I imagined the villagers who had used it for centuries, carrying their goods to market, visiting family and friends, and simply going about their daily lives. The bridge is not just a structure; it's a symbol of community, connection, and the enduring spirit of rural Vietnam. It was recognized as a national cultural heritage site in 1990.
I spent some time exploring the village, chatting with locals and learning about their way of life. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, and I felt a genuine connection to this place. It reminded me of my own hometown in Brazil, where community is everything. I even learned about the death anniversary of Tran Thi Dao, which is commemorated every year on the 15th day of the lunar calendar.
Before heading back to Hue, I stopped at a local café for a cup of Vietnamese coffee. Sipping the strong, sweet brew, I reflected on my day and the bridges I had visited. Each one told a different story, but both were testaments to the human spirit – our ability to build, connect, and persevere.
For dinner, I decided to try Sweet Olive Garden, a restaurant recommended for its cozy atmosphere and delicious Vietnamese dishes. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and reflection. I enjoyed some local beer at Century Beer Garden. Century Beer Garden is a vibrant destination that perfectly combines the charm of a beer garden with the energy of a lively bar.
