Day 8: Summiting Yakushima: A Day of Triumph and Culinary Delights
Conquer Mt. Miyanoura, savor local flavors, and unwind in Yakushima's embrace. A day of adventure and culinary discovery awaits!
Reaching New Heights & Savoring Island Life
Today was a day of personal triumph, a blend of physical challenge and the simple joys of experiencing Yakushima's unique culture. From conquering the island's highest peak to indulging in its diverse culinary offerings, it was a day etched in my memory. I woke up with an extra spring in my step, excited for the adventures that lay ahead.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It's conveniently located, which made it perfect for a quick and satisfying meal before heading out. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and rice. It was the perfect fuel for the day's main event: hiking Mt. Miyanoura within Yakushima National Park.

The Yakushima National Park is a treasure trove of natural beauty, and Mt. Miyanoura, as its highest point, promised breathtaking views. The hike itself was challenging but incredibly rewarding. The Yodogawa Trail is known as one of the easier trails to the summit and back, which was a relief. The air was crisp and clean, and the sounds of nature filled the forest. I passed ancient cedar trees, some dating back thousands of years, their gnarled branches reaching towards the sky. The humidity was noticeable, a reminder of Yakushima's subtropical climate, but it added to the lushness of the surroundings. I was grateful for my hiking boots and rain gear, essentials I remembered to pack this time!

I'm not usually one for super strenuous activity, but I felt compelled to reach the summit. As I ascended, the vegetation changed, and I found myself surrounded by unique plant life. The trail was well-maintained, but there were still some steep sections that tested my endurance. I took breaks to catch my breath and admire the scenery, feeling a sense of accomplishment with each step. I even saw some Yakushima deer and monkeys along the way.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are not about the destination, but the journey itself.
Reaching the summit of Mt. Miyanoura was an exhilarating experience. The panoramic views were simply stunning. I could see the entire island spread out below me, with the vast expanse of the East China Sea stretching to the horizon. The clouds danced around the peaks, creating a mystical atmosphere. I spent some time at the top, soaking in the beauty and feeling a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such natural wonder.
After descending from Mt. Miyanoura, my stomach was rumbling, and I was ready for a well-deserved lunch. I decided to try Subarashi Indian Restaurant, drawn in by the rave reviews I had read. I know, Indian food in Japan might sound a bit strange, but I was intrigued. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The owner, Bidhan, was incredibly welcoming, and the aroma of spices filled the air. I ordered a vegetarian curry, specifying no dairy to keep it vegan, and it was absolutely delicious. The naan was perfectly crispy, and the curry was flavorful and satisfying. It was a delightful change of pace from Japanese cuisine, and I savored every bite.

In the late afternoon, with my body tired but my spirit lifted, I decided to explore the local nightlife a bit. I headed to Seirios, a bar known for its cozy atmosphere and selection of local drinks. It was a great place to unwind after a long day of hiking. I tried a local craft beer, which had a unique flavor that reflected the island's natural ingredients. The staff was friendly, and I enjoyed chatting with them about Yakushima and its culture.

For dinner, I opted for Smiley, a charming cafe with a view of the harbor. I had read about their delicious cakes and coffee, and I was in the mood for something sweet. The cafe had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, with wooden furniture and local crafts on display. I ordered a slice of banana caramel cake and a cup of coffee, and it was the perfect way to end the day. The cake was moist and flavorful, and the coffee was rich and aromatic. Sipping my coffee while watching the sunset over the harbor was a truly magical moment.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the beauty and tranquility of Yakushima. It's a place where nature reigns supreme, and where you can find both physical challenge and spiritual rejuvenation. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, which promises more exploration and discovery. I plan to visit the Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen, a unique hot spring that emerges from the sea at low tide, and the East China Sea Observatory, for more stunning views. I might even pop into Wood Shop Kikori to pick up a souvenir.
Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy bug spray tomorrow. Those little critters are relentless!
Good night from Yakushima!
