Coastal Charms and Sunset Dreams

Today was a day dedicated to the serene embrace of Yakushima's coastline. I set out to explore hidden gems, soak in the island's natural beauty, and experience the local culture. It’s amazing how each day here brings a new perspective, a fresh appreciation for the simple joys of solo travel. I’m finding that the best stories are often written in the quiet moments, the unplanned detours, and the unexpected connections made along the way.

My day began with an early breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set. The familiar comfort of grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures. The restaurant was bustling with a mix of travelers and locals, each with their own stories etched on their faces. It's these everyday scenes that remind me how travel connects us all, no matter where we come from.

With a full stomach, I set off towards my first destination: Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen. This open-air, seaside onsen is only accessible during low tide, adding an element of anticipation to the visit. The drive itself was scenic, with glimpses of the rugged coastline and lush greenery that Yakushima is famous for. I was a bit nervous, as I had read mixed reviews about the onsen experience. Some found it liberating, while others felt uncomfortable with the mixed bathing and lack of strict rules. I reminded myself to be respectful, open-minded, and embrace the experience, whatever it may be.

Arriving at Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen, I was struck by the raw, natural beauty of the place. The onsen is essentially a series of rocky pools formed by the ocean, with hot spring water bubbling up from below. As the tide receded, the pools became more defined, each offering a slightly different temperature and depth. I carefully made my way down the rocky path, mindful of the slippery surface. As I undressed, I noticed that most people were using small towels to cover themselves. I followed suit, feeling a bit more at ease.

Soaking in the warm water, with the waves crashing nearby, was an incredibly soothing experience. The water had a slightly sulfuric smell, a testament to the volcanic activity beneath the island. I closed my eyes, listening to the rhythm of the ocean and the gentle chatter of the other bathers. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect escape from the stresses of everyday life. I even managed to strike up a conversation with a local woman who shared stories about the island's history and culture. It's these unexpected connections that make solo travel so rewarding.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the simplest of moments, in the shared laughter and quiet conversations that bridge cultures and create lasting memories.

After my onsen experience, I decided to explore the nearby East China Sea Observatory. The observatory is perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the coastline and the vast expanse of the East China Sea. The drive up was steep and winding, but the views at the top were well worth the effort. From the observatory, I could see the islands of Kuchinoerabujima, Kuroshima, and Iojima in the distance. The sky was a brilliant blue, dotted with fluffy white clouds. It was a perfect spot for contemplation, a place to reflect on the journey so far and to appreciate the beauty of the natural world. I spent some time simply breathing in the fresh sea air and soaking in the view.

On the way back, I stopped at Wood Shop Kikori, a local woodworking shop that specializes in Yakusugi crafts. The shop is located in a charming wooden building, filled with the aroma of cedar. The owner, a former forester, was incredibly passionate about his craft. He explained the unique properties of Yakusugi wood, its resistance to decay and its beautiful grain. I purchased a small, hand-carved ornament as a memento of my visit, a tangible reminder of the ancient forests that Yakushima is famous for. I've always appreciated craftsmanship, perhaps because Hans is so passionate about his work, and it was wonderful to see the dedication and skill that goes into creating these beautiful objects.

For lunch, I decided to try the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the menu featured local specialties. I opted for a set meal that included flying fish sashimi, a local delicacy. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to the island's rich seafood. The meal also included miso soup, rice, and pickled vegetables, a perfect balance of flavors and textures. It was a satisfying and authentic culinary experience.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Shiosai for dinner. This restaurant is known for its seafood and traditional Japanese dishes. I had heard great things about their flying fish dishes, so I decided to give them a try. I ordered the fried flying fish, which came with a spicy radish sauce and citrus soy sauce. The fish was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, a perfect combination of textures. I also tried the giant shrimp, which was juicy and flavorful. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Yokogawa Valley and Ryujin Falls. I'm looking forward to immersing myself in the island's lush interior and discovering more of its hidden gems. And maybe I'll treat myself to a drink at Fisherman's Bar NINA in the evening – a perfect way to unwind after another day of adventure. Even though I miss Hans and Sofia, I know that this journey is something special, a chance to reconnect with myself and to discover new perspectives on the world. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

As I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Yakushima. It's a place that nourishes the soul, a place where nature and culture intertwine to create a truly unique and unforgettable travel experience. I feel so lucky to be able to share these experiences with you all, and I hope that my stories inspire you to embark on your own adventures, wherever they may lead. Until tomorrow, happy travels!
