A Day of Discovery and Delight

Today was another day of artistic immersion here on Naoshima Island, and I couldn't wait to share my experiences with you. It was a day that revealed some of the island's quieter, more contemplative corners, offering a deeper understanding of its art and culture. From exploring local archives to savoring delicious meals, I’m excited to tell you all about it.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Chikurin. The cozy atmosphere and traditional Japanese fare were exactly what we needed to fuel up for a day of exploration. I always appreciate starting the day with a meal that connects me to the local culture, and this little restaurant did not disappoint. It reminded me of the small eateries back in Anse Boileau, where the food is simple, honest, and full of flavour.

After breakfast, we headed to Honmura, a charming port town on Naoshima's eastern coast, to visit the Honmura Lounge & Archive. The lounge serves as an information center for the Art House Project, a collection of abandoned houses, a temple and a shrine, which have been converted into art installations and venues for contemporary art. As an English teacher, I love places like this, where information is readily available and presented in an engaging way. The archive was a treasure trove of materials about the artists and architects involved in the projects. I found myself engrossed in the history and background of the Art House Project, gaining a deeper appreciation for the way art is interwoven with the island's identity. Hans, ever the patient one, browsed the lovely shop, picking up a few postcards to send back home to our families in Germany and Seychelles.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Leaving Honmura, we made our way to Miyanoura, the main port town where the iconic Red Pumpkin sculpture welcomes visitors. Our destination was Miyanoura Gallery 6, a unique space housed in a renovated pachinko parlor. The contrast between the building's past life as an amusement arcade and its current role as an art gallery was striking. Miyanoura Gallery 6 is the first exhibition facility to be constructed in an area inhabited by the people of Naoshima. The original facade for an old pachinko parlor, loved by the local people, has been left as it is to enable them to become familiar with the facility, but the building itself has been completely renovated into an exhibition facility.

The gallery focuses on photography and video installations, offering a different perspective on the island and its surroundings. The current exhibit featured works from various artists, each offering a unique take on the Seto Inland Sea and its culture. I was particularly moved by a series of photographs capturing the daily lives of the islanders, their faces etched with the stories of generations. It was a reminder of the human element behind the art, the people whose lives are so intimately connected to this island.

After immersing ourselves in the art at Miyanoura Gallery 6, our stomachs began to rumble, signaling lunchtime. We decided to try NaoPAM/ Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda, a charming eatery known for its delectable fish set meals. The restaurant is conveniently located near the Naoshima Bath “I♥湯”, making it a perfect spot to grab a bite after a day of exploring. NaoPAM/Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda specializes in delectable fish set meals that highlight the freshest catches of the day. With a menu that changes daily, diners can savor options like sashimi, grilled fish, and boiled fish sets featuring local favorites such as Spanish mackerel and sea bream. I opted for the grilled fish set, while Hans chose the sashimi. Both were incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to the island's rich seafood offerings. The simple, traditional preparation allowed the natural flavors of the fish to shine through, and I savored every bite. It was a truly authentic culinary experience, reminiscent of the fresh seafood dishes I grew up with in Seychelles.

With our appetites satisfied, we took some time to explore the shops in Miyanoura. Naoshima Shop Umihotaru caught my eye with its array of local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few small gifts for my family back home, wanting to share a piece of Naoshima with them. The shop itself was a charming space, reflecting the island's artistic vibe and commitment to sustainability. It was a perfect place to find unique items that captured the essence of Naoshima.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at Ebisukamo, a cozy bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and local sake. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration. The bar was filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the laid-back vibe and friendly conversation. I tried a local sake, while Hans opted for a Japanese beer. We chatted with a few fellow travelers, sharing our experiences and recommendations for the island. It was a reminder of the sense of community that Naoshima fosters, bringing people together through art and culture.

For dinner, we had reservations at Terrace Restaurant, located in the annex of Benesse House. The restaurant offers a traditional Japanese sushi experience with a picturesque view of the beach, making it one of the best spots on the island to catch a sunset. Guests can enjoy a degustation course featuring highlights such as tempura fish and chilled corn soup. Additionally, breakfast options are available with American-style offerings due to the pandemic. The restaurant has an airy, subtly sophisticated feel, and serves upmarket French cuisine. We enjoyed a delicious meal while watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to a day of discovery and delight.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the way Naoshima seamlessly blends art, culture, and community. From the thought-provoking exhibits at Honmura Lounge & Archive and Miyanoura Gallery 6 to the delicious meals at Chikurin and NaoPAM/ Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda, every experience has been a testament to the island's unique charm. And as we prepare for another day of exploration tomorrow, I can’t help but feel excited about what Naoshima has in store for us. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Gokurakuji Temple and the Walking Ark, continuing our journey through the island's cultural landscape. I'm particularly excited about Gokurakuji Temple, as I've always been drawn to the serene beauty of temples and shrines. I'm also looking forward to experiencing the Walking Ark, an outdoor sculpture that promises to be a unique and thought-provoking work of art. I am looking forward to sharing more about my Naoshima adventures with you all!

For now, though, it’s time to rest and recharge. Until tomorrow!
