Naoshima's Artistic Echoes

Today, Naoshima revealed its charm beyond the famed museums, inviting a more intimate encounter with art and island life. It was a day of discovery, where each corner turned unveiled a new facet of this unique destination. From the serene galleries to the comforting embrace of local cuisine, Naoshima continues to surprise and inspire.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. The cafe is tucked away in Honmura Village, and it was the perfect way to start the day. Hans and I shared a set lunch, savoring the seasonal special featuring local Setouchi ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the Happy Scones, which the cafe is known for. The cafe itself felt like a cozy home, with warm smiles and a welcoming atmosphere. It reminded me of the small cafes back in Anse Boileau, Seychelles, where the food is made with love and the ingredients are always fresh. It was a delightful way to fuel up before diving into the day's artistic adventures.

Next on the agenda was the Seaside Gallery, a space designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando. Located within the Benesse House Museum complex, the gallery offered stunning ocean views that seemed to merge seamlessly with the art. The natural light pouring in through the large windows created an ethereal ambiance, enhancing the experience of the artwork on display. I found myself captivated by the way the gallery's architecture framed the surrounding landscape, blurring the lines between the indoors and outdoors. It was a truly immersive experience that left me feeling both inspired and connected to nature.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Afterward, we ventured to the Shipyard Works by Shinro Ohtake, an installation that beautifully blends art with Naoshima's industrial heritage. The repurposed shipyard elements were transformed into striking works of art, each piece thoughtfully placed to complement the coastal landscape. I was particularly drawn to *Stern with Hole*, a colorful sculpture that seemed to echo the island's history. The juxtaposition of the industrial materials against the serene backdrop of the sea created a thought-provoking contrast, inviting contemplation on the relationship between art and the environment. It was a testament to Ohtake's vision and his ability to find beauty in unexpected places.

For lunch, we indulged in a comforting meal at Okonomiyaki Umikko. This charming restaurant, known for its delicious okonomiyaki, offered a cozy atmosphere that made us feel right at home. We savored the savory pancakes, filled with a variety of ingredients that burst with flavor. It was a delightful experience, made even better by the friendly staff and the restaurant's inviting ambiance. It reminded me of the simple yet satisfying meals I used to enjoy with my family in Seychelles, where the focus was always on fresh ingredients and good company.

In the afternoon, I couldn't resist a bit of shopping at the Benesse House Museum shop. The shop offered a curated selection of art goods, books, and souvenirs, perfect for commemorating our visit to Naoshima. I picked up a few postcards featuring my favorite artworks, as well as a guidebook on Japanese art to further expand my knowledge. It was a small indulgence, but one that I knew would bring me joy long after our trip was over.

Before dinner, we decided to unwind at Cafe Salon Nakaoku. Tucked away on a quiet street, this traditional Japanese-style cafe exuded a sense of tranquility that was hard to resist. We settled into the cozy interior, adorned with antique furniture and Japanese wagasa umbrellas. Sipping on artisanal coffee, we savored the peaceful atmosphere and reflected on the day's adventures. It was a perfect way to recharge before our final culinary experience of the day.

Dinner was at Yayoda, a restaurant known for its excellent, traditional Japanese fare. The restaurant emphasized fresh fish caught locally, offering a true taste of Naoshima's culinary heritage. I opted for a seafood dish, savoring the delicate flavors and textures of the ocean. Hans tried the sake flight, which he found adventurous and delightful. The meal was a perfect ending to a day filled with art, culture, and culinary delights. It was a reminder of the importance of savoring the simple pleasures in life, like good food and good company.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves reflecting on the unique charm of Naoshima. The island had exceeded our expectations, offering a blend of contemporary art, traditional Japanese culture, and stunning natural landscapes. From the serene galleries to the comforting embrace of local cuisine, Naoshima had captured our hearts and left us with memories to last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Honmura Lounge & Archive and Miyanoura Gallery 6, continuing our immersion into Naoshima's vibrant art scene. We'll also be trying out Chikurin for breakfast and Terrace Restaurant for dinner, eager to discover more of the island's culinary treasures. I am particularly excited to visit Naoshima Shop Umihotaru, hoping to find unique souvenirs to bring back home. I am also planning to visit Ebisukamo for a drink. Each day here brings new adventures, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds.

As I sit here, penning down my thoughts, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences of today. Naoshima has a way of seeping into your soul, leaving you with a sense of wonder and appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. It is a place where art and life intertwine, creating a tapestry of experiences that are both enriching and unforgettable. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow will bring even more discoveries and adventures in this enchanting corner of the world.
