Whispers of the Past, Tastes of Today

Today was a beautiful blend of history, nature, and, of course, the incredible flavors of Kochi. Hans and I set out with a sense of adventure, eager to explore more of Shikoku Island's hidden gems. It's amazing how much this island has to offer, from ancient ruins to breathtaking natural wonders.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Osusowake Shokudo Mado. The name 'Osusowake' means to share something with others, which is fitting because the restaurant embodies the spirit of community and warmth. It's a charming spot in Kami, known for its authentic Japanese flavors and commitment to using fresh, local ingredients. I opted for a traditional set meal with grilled fish, rice, and miso soup, while Hans enjoyed a hearty bowl of ramen. The staff were so welcoming, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect way to start our day, fueling us up for the adventures ahead. I even learned that the owner hopes the cafeteria would be a window that people could have connection with others.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we drove to the Oko Castle Ruins. As we approached, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like here centuries ago. The castle was the original base of power for the Chōsokabe clan, who were feudal lords of Tosa Province. It's amazing to think that this was once the home of Chōsokabe Motochika, a warlord who played a significant role in Shikoku's history.

Walking through the ruins, we could still see traces of the castle's embankment, moat, and buildings. The site is now a historical park, and the Kōchi Prefectural Museum of History has been built in what was once the Third Enclosure. We spent a good amount of time exploring the museum, learning about the castle's history and the artifacts that have been excavated from the site. It was fascinating to see how the Chōsokabe clan rose to power from this small castle.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After immersing ourselves in history, it was time for a change of scenery. We drove to the Ryugado Museum, eager to explore one of Japan's largest limestone caves. The drive itself was beautiful, with lush greenery and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. As we arrived at Ryugado Cave, I was immediately struck by the sense of mystery and adventure that hung in the air.

The cave was formed over 175 million years and is home to a variety of unique rock formations, subterranean rivers, and over 100 species of animals. As we descended into the depths of the cave, I felt like I was entering another world. The stalactites and stalagmites were breathtaking, and the sound of the water flowing through the cave created an eerie but beautiful atmosphere.

We explored the main tunnel, which has been enhanced with colorful lights, projection mapping, and music. It added an extra dimension of wonder to the experience. I was particularly impressed by the 11-meter waterfall, lit up with blue lights and accompanied by original music. It was a truly magical sight.

After our subterranean adventure, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Eki-mae Shokudo, a charming restaurant in Otoyo known for its authentic Japanese regional cuisine. This cozy eatery is perfect for tourists seeking to immerse themselves in local flavors and traditions. The menu featured an array of traditional dishes that highlight the unique flavors of the Kochi region, ensuring a memorable dining experience that reflects Japan's rich culinary heritage. We enjoyed a delicious meal of locally sourced ingredients, savoring each bite and reflecting on the incredible experiences of the day.

As evening approached, we made our way back to Kochi City for dinner. Tonight, we decided to try Okamura, an izakaya in Nankoku. An izakaya is a traditional Japanese bar, and Okamura offered an authentic taste of Japanese cuisine and a cozy atmosphere. We sampled a variety of dishes, including grilled meats, fresh sashimi, and seasonal specialties. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring.

To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Bar Rokudenashi. This bar has a lively and inviting ambiance, making it a great spot for socializing and enjoying expertly crafted cocktails. It was the perfect place to relax and reflect on our adventures. I really enjoyed chatting with some of the locals and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Kochi Castle, one of the few original castles remaining in Japan. I'm also looking forward to seeing the Statues of the Three Tosa Samurai and exploring more of Kochi City. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences. I am also hoping to find a portable phone charger, as I forgot mine at home!

Tonight, as I write this from our cozy ryokan, I'm filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences we had today. From the ancient ruins of Oko Castle to the magical depths of Ryugado Cave, and the delicious flavors of Kochi's local cuisine, it was a day that truly touched my heart. I feel so fortunate to be able to share these experiences with Hans and with all of you. Until tomorrow, safe travels and may your own adventures be filled with wonder and joy.
