Chasing Views and Blue Hues in Chefchaouen

Today was all about embracing the charm of Chefchaouen, a city that continues to surprise and delight at every turn. Jean-Pierre and I set out with a loose plan, ready to let the day unfold naturally. Little did we know, we were in for a blend of breathtaking views, cultural immersion, and the simple joy of wandering through this blue-washed wonderland. It's days like these that remind me why I fell in love with travel blogging in the first place – the chance to share these unique experiences with all of you.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Mounir Food. I savored a traditional Moroccan pancake, Msemen, drizzled with local honey, while Jean-Pierre opted for a hearty tagine. The mint tea, of course, was a must – sweet, fragrant, and the perfect start to our explorations. Mounir Food had a very authentic feel to it. It felt like we were having breakfast with locals, which is always a plus.

Fueled up and ready to go, our first stop was the Hero Eagle. The walk there was invigorating. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of the mountains. As we ascended, the city slowly revealed itself beneath us, a mesmerizing tapestry of blue stretching across the Rif Mountains. I couldn’t help but snap photos at every turn; the panoramic vista was simply too stunning to resist. Jean-Pierre, ever the patient one, waited as I tried to capture the perfect shot. The Hero Eagle itself is more of a viewpoint, but what a viewpoint it is ! You can see the unique architecture and the serene atmosphere of Chefchaouen from there. It was a perfect spot to appreciate the unique architecture and the serene atmosphere of Chefchaouen.

We spent a good hour there, soaking it all in. I found myself reflecting on our journey so far, from the bustling markets of Marrakech to the tranquil blue streets of Chefchaouen. It's amazing how each place leaves its own unique mark on your soul. As someone who grew up in Miarinarivo, Madagascar, I've always been drawn to places that feel both familiar and foreign, where the landscapes echo the beauty of home while offering new perspectives and experiences.

Wandering through Chefchaouen is like stepping into a living painting, where every corner reveals a new shade of blue and a fresh perspective on life.

Next on our list was Darb Limoun, described as the heart of Chefchaouen's charm. This narrow alleyway is a photographer's dream, with its vibrant blue walls and traditional Moroccan architecture. As we strolled through, we passed artisan shops selling handmade goods, from woven textiles to intricate pottery. I was particularly drawn to a small shop selling colorful babouches (traditional Moroccan slippers), each pair a unique work of art. Jean-Pierre, always practical, reminded me that we were trying to pack light, but I couldn't resist buying a pair for my mother. She’s always admired the craftsmanship of Moroccan artisans.

Lunch was at Chez Foad, a local favorite known for its authentic Moroccan dishes. We shared a tagine with chicken, olives, and preserved lemons, a flavorful combination that perfectly captured the essence of Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and convivial atmosphere. It was a reminder that some of the best travel experiences come from simply sharing a meal with others, regardless of language or background.

In the afternoon, we ventured into a Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop, drawn in by the warm glow emanating from within. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted lanterns, each one casting intricate patterns of light and shadow. I learned from the shopkeeper that many of these lamps are made using traditional techniques passed down through generations. I was captivated by the artistry and skill involved in creating these beautiful objects. We ended up buying a small copper lantern to bring back home, a reminder of our time in this magical blue city. I'm already imagining it casting a warm glow in our Montreal apartment, a little piece of Morocco to brighten up our days.

As we wandered through the shop, I couldn't help but think about the artisans of Madagascar, who create beautiful objects using traditional techniques. There's a connection there, a shared sense of pride in preserving cultural heritage through art. It makes me appreciate the work of these Moroccan artisans even more.

Before dinner, we decided to revisit Darb Limoun, wanting to see it in a different light. As the sun began to set, the blue walls took on a new hue, a deeper, richer shade that seemed to glow from within. The alleyway was quieter now, the daytime crowds having dispersed, leaving only a few locals chatting in doorways. It was a peaceful, almost magical moment. Chefchaouen truly comes alive in the evening.

Dinner was at Restaurant Bab Kasaba, recommended by our hotel concierge. The restaurant had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, with traditional Moroccan décor and soft lighting. We enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled meats and vegetables, accompanied by local wine. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had. From the breathtaking views at Hero Eagle to the vibrant colors of Darb Limoun and the warmth of the local artisans, Chefchaouen has captured my heart. It's a place that feels both familiar and exotic, a blend of cultures and traditions that resonate deeply within me. I'm so glad that Jean-Pierre and I decided to include this blue pearl in our Moroccan adventure.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Lavadero de la ciudad and Feddan Park. I'm looking forward to discovering more hidden gems in this enchanting city, and perhaps enjoying a drink at Bar Oum Rabie in the evening. For now, I'm content to sit on our hotel terrace, sipping mint tea and watching the stars twinkle above the blue-washed rooftops. Goodnight from Chefchaouen!

As I sit here writing, I realize that travel isn't just about seeing new places; it's about connecting with people, embracing different cultures, and discovering new perspectives. It's about finding those moments of joy and wonder that make life so rich and meaningful. And Chefchaouen, with its blue walls and warm hearts, has given us plenty of those moments to cherish.

I am also reminded of the importance of remembering those little essentials when travelling. I wish I hadn’t forgotten my sun hat and an extra memory card for my camera. These would have come in very handy today!

I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
