Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco: A Journey to Chefchaouen
Day 12: A Day of Simple Pleasures in Chefchaouen
Discover Chefchaouen's charm through its historic washhouse, serene park, and delightful culinary experiences. A day of simple pleasures.
Finding Beauty in the Everyday
Today in Chefchaouen was a reminder that sometimes the most profound travel experiences come from the simplest moments. It wasn't about grand monuments or adrenaline-pumping activities, but rather about observing daily life, enjoying nature, and savoring local flavors. These are the days that truly connect you to a place, and I'm so grateful for the quiet beauty I found today.
Our day began with the familiar, comforting aroma of mint tea at Café Sindibad. I savored each sip, Jean-Pierre engrossed in a conversation with a local artisan about the intricacies of his craft. The cafe, nestled with a great view of Chefchaouen, offered a perfect start to our day, its colorful decor and warm atmosphere setting a cheerful tone. We enjoyed some Moroccan bread with flavorful dips, a simple yet delightful breakfast.
After breakfast, we strolled to Lavadero de la Ciudad, the town's historic washhouse. It was fascinating to watch local women washing clothes in the flowing waters, a tradition passed down through generations. The rhythmic sounds of water and the vibrant scene offered a glimpse into the daily life of Chefchaouen. The air was filled with chatter and laughter, a sense of community palpable in the crisp morning air. Jean-Pierre, ever the curious one, struck up a conversation with one of the women, learning about the traditional methods they use and the importance of this place to the community. I captured a few photos, trying to encapsulate the essence of this timeless ritual.

The beauty of travel lies not always in seeing new things, but in seeing familiar things as if they were new.
Next, we sought the tranquility of Feddan Park. The park offered a serene escape from the bustling medina. We strolled along the green spaces, admiring the trees and flowers. It was a peaceful spot, perfect for a quiet moment of reflection. We found a bench and simply sat, watching children play and locals chat. It was a moment of simple, unadulterated joy, a reminder to appreciate the small things in life. As someone who grew up in Miarinarivo, Madagascar, where nature is so integral to daily life, I always find solace in green spaces, no matter where I am in the world. It's a way to reconnect with my roots and find peace amidst the chaos of travel.

For lunch, we ventured to Restaurant Ali Baba. The restaurant offered a delightful array of Moroccan cuisine. I opted for the vegetable tagine, a flavorful dish that was both hearty and comforting. Jean-Pierre, always eager to try new things, chose the couscous, savoring each bite with evident pleasure. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. It was a truly authentic culinary experience, one that I will cherish long after we leave Chefchaouen.

In the late afternoon, we decided to explore Bar Oum Rabie. This cozy bar is known for its grilled cuisine and inviting atmosphere. While Jean-Pierre enjoyed a glass of Moroccan wine, I savored a refreshing mint tea, watching the world go by. The bar was filled with locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant and convivial atmosphere. We chatted with a couple from Spain, sharing travel stories and tips. It was a reminder of the connections that travel fosters, the way it brings people together from all corners of the globe.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Hamsa, drawn in by its reputation for Mediterranean and Moroccan dishes. I decided on the vegan falafel, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed the chicken tagine. The flavors were exquisite, a testament to the chef's skill and passion. The restaurant had a relaxed and friendly ambiance, making it a perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploration. As we ate, we reflected on our day, marveling at the simple beauty we had encountered.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the blue city, we made our way back to Hotel Barcelona, our hearts full of gratitude for the experiences of the day. We sat on the terrace, watching the stars emerge in the night sky. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow marks the end of our stay in Chefchaouen, and we plan to make the most of it by visiting the Kasbah and Bab Chaouen. I'm particularly excited to explore the Kasbah, a historic fortress that offers panoramic views of the city. I also hope to find some unique souvenirs at CHAOUEN GIFTS to bring back home to Montreal. While I am excited about the final day, I am also going to miss Chefchaouen.
Even though I forgot my sun hat and extra memory card, I am happy to be sharing these experiences with my readers. I hope my stories inspire you to seek out the simple pleasures in your own travels, to find beauty in the everyday, and to connect with the world in a meaningful way. After all, it's these small moments that often leave the biggest impact. I am looking forward to sharing my last day in Chefchaouen with you all!
