A Day of Contrasts: Nature and Art in Northern Morocco

Today was a day of striking contrasts, a vivid illustration of Morocco's diverse offerings. We ventured from the enchanting blue alleys of Chefchaouen to the rugged beauty of Akchour's waterfalls, and then immersed ourselves in the modern art scene of Tetouan. It was a day that fed both our souls and our senses, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for this captivating country.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Café & restaurant Meftah. Jean-Pierre and I enjoyed some traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for our adventure to Akchour. The café had a friendly atmosphere, and we enjoyed watching the town slowly wake up as we ate.

The drive to Akchour was breathtaking. The landscape transformed from the blue-washed buildings of Chefchaouen to rolling green hills and rocky terrain. I couldn't help but think of my homeland, Madagascar, with its own unique blend of landscapes. Jean-Pierre, ever the navigator, ensured we stayed on course, and before long, we arrived at the trailhead for the Akchour Waterfalls.

The hike itself was invigorating. The air was crisp and clean, and the sound of rushing water echoed through the valley. The trail was a bit rocky in places, but nothing too strenuous. It was October, and the weather was perfect for hiking – not too hot, not too cold. I was glad I'd packed my comfortable walking shoes; I had almost forgotten them, but remembered at the last minute. We passed several small stalls selling refreshments, and I made a mental note to stop for some fresh orange juice on our way back.

The Akchour Waterfalls were simply stunning. The water cascaded down the rocks into a series of turquoise pools. I was tempted to take a dip, but Jean-Pierre reminded me that we had more to see today. We spent some time simply admiring the view, taking photos, and soaking in the natural beauty. I made sure to capture a panoramic shot to truly capture the scale of it all. I can see why they say October to November are usually the times when the place is packed with tourists.

After our hike, we enjoyed a satisfying lunch at Restaurant Dar El Salam. I opted for a traditional tagine, while Jean-Pierre chose the couscous. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant itself was charming, with beautiful Moroccan decor and a cozy atmosphere. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.

With our bellies full, we set off for Tetouan, a city known for its modern art scene. The drive was relatively short, and soon we found ourselves at the Tetuan Modern Art Center. The building itself was impressive, a blend of modern design and traditional Moroccan architecture.

Inside, we were greeted by a diverse collection of contemporary artworks. Paintings, sculptures, and digital art filled the galleries, each piece telling a unique story. I was particularly drawn to the works by local artists, which reflected the rich cultural tapestry of Tetouan. Jean-Pierre, with his software developer's mind, was fascinated by the digital art installations.

The Tetouan Modern Art Center is not just a museum; it's a hub for artistic dialogue and community engagement. I was impressed by the center's commitment to promoting local talent and fostering creativity. It reminded me of the importance of supporting the arts, both in Morocco and back home in Montreal.

Before heading back to Chefchaouen, we treated ourselves to dinner at Restaurant Chourafa. This restaurant came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the Moroccan spices added a unique twist. Jean-Pierre raved about the sea bass, while I savored the traditional Moroccan shrimp tagine. We shared some almond flan for dessert, the perfect ending to a perfect meal. The prices seemed reasonable, especially considering the quality and variety of seafood dishes offered.

As we drove back to our hotel in Chefchaouen, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the natural beauty of Akchour to the artistic expression of Tetouan, we experienced the multifaceted charm of Morocco. It was a day that reminded me why I love to travel, to explore new cultures, and to connect with the world around me.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Bab El Hammar and Park Sidi Abdelhamid. I'm looking forward to discovering more hidden gems in this enchanting region. Perhaps we'll even stop by Café Mundial for a relaxing evening.

I'm also thinking of picking up a sun hat tomorrow since I forgot to pack one. And maybe I'll find an extra memory card for my camera at Jabir shop chefchaouen; I've been taking so many pictures.
