Sunday Strolls and Serene Squares

Today was all about embracing the relaxed rhythm of Chefchaouen. After several days of more structured sightseeing, Jean-Pierre and I decided to simply wander and soak in the atmosphere of this blue-washed town. It’s amazing how different a place can feel when you let go of the itinerary and just allow yourself to be present.

Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream. This little spot came highly recommended, and it certainly lived up to the hype. I opted for a classic crepe with Nutella, while Jean-Pierre, ever the adventurer, tried one with local honey and almonds. Sipping on fresh orange juice, we watched the town slowly come to life, the sounds of children playing and shopkeepers setting up their displays filling the air. It was a perfect way to start a slow Sunday. The temperature in Chefchaouen in October is mild, with average temperatures ranging from the low 50s to low 70s.

With our appetites sated, we set out to explore Boulevard Mohamed V. This bustling street is a far cry from the narrow, winding alleyways of the medina, offering a more modern perspective on Chefchaouen. Lined with shops and cafes, it’s a great place to people-watch and get a sense of daily life for the locals. We strolled along, window-shopping and enjoying the vibrant energy of the street. I couldn't help but notice the blend of traditional Moroccan styles and contemporary fashion, a reflection of the town's unique character. We bought some postcards, intending to send them to our families back in Montreal, promising to share more stories of our Moroccan adventure.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from simply slowing down and observing the world around you.

Next on our list was Plaza Mohammed V. Just a short walk from the boulevard, this lush park offered a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the town. The well-kept greenery and colorful flowers created a serene atmosphere, and we found a bench to sit and relax for a while. It was lovely to watch families enjoying their Sunday afternoon, children playing, and couples strolling hand-in-hand. Jean-Pierre, ever the attentive husband, pointed out the unique architecture surrounding the plaza, a blend of Moroccan and Andalusian styles that added to the charm of the space. I made a mental note to try and incorporate some of these design elements into our home in Montreal, a little piece of Chefchaouen to remind us of our travels.

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant blue dream. I had read some great reviews about their traditional Moroccan dishes, and we were both eager to try some authentic cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I opted for the tagine, while Jean-Pierre chose the couscous. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, and we savored every bite. It was a truly immersive culinary experience, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to taste the authentic flavors of Morocco. The restaurant also had live music, which created a great atmosphere.

In the late afternoon, we sought out Ben Jamaê Coffey a local bar known for its relaxed vibe. We enjoyed some traditional mint tea, reflecting on our day and planning our adventures for tomorrow. Sipping the sweet, fragrant tea, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. It was moments like these, simple and unhurried, that made traveling so rewarding. We chatted with some locals, learning about their lives and sharing stories of our own. It was a reminder that, despite our differences, we are all connected by our shared humanity.

As evening approached, we made our way to Restaurant Triana for dinner. This restaurant came highly recommended for its ambiance and delicious food, and we were not disappointed. The decor was elegant and inviting, and the staff were attentive and welcoming. I decided to try the seafood salad, while Jean-Pierre opted for the lamb tagine. Both dishes were beautifully presented and tasted divine. The restaurant had a calm atmosphere. As we savored our meal, we listened to the soothing sounds of live music, the perfect ending to a perfect day. I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Chefchaouen, a truly magical place that had captured our hearts.

Tomorrow, we are planning a day trip to Akchour and the Tetuan Modern Art Center. I am particularly excited about visiting Akchour, as I have heard it is a beautiful natural area with waterfalls and hiking trails. Jean-Pierre is looking forward to the Tetuan Modern Art Center. We plan to have breakfast at Café & restaurant Meftah, lunch at Restaurant Dar El Salam, and dinner at Restaurant Chourafa. We will also be stopping by Jabir shop chefchaouen.

As I write this, I am sitting on the terrace of our hotel, the cool evening air caressing my skin. The stars are twinkling above, and the sounds of the town are slowly fading into the night. I feel a sense of peace and contentment, grateful for the experiences of the day and excited for what tomorrow will bring. Chefchaouen has a way of slowing you down, of reminding you to appreciate the simple things in life. It’s a lesson I hope to carry with me long after we leave this magical blue city.

I am also reminded that I forgot to pack a sun hat and an extra memory card for my camera. I will need to purchase these items tomorrow.
