A Day of Discovery in Chefchaouen
Today was a day of embracing the natural beauty and cultural heart of Chefchaouen. Jean-Pierre and I ventured beyond the blue walls to discover hidden gems and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of this Moroccan town. From cascading waterfalls to bustling plazas, every moment was a sensory delight.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at BILMOS. I opted for a traditional Moroccan pancake, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed a classic omelet. The café's location, right in the heart of Chefchaouen, allowed us to watch the town slowly awaken. The temperatures in Chefchaouen in October are comfortable, with highs around 74°F, making it ideal for outdoor activities.
Fueled and ready for adventure, we set off for Akchour Waterfalls, a scenic drive about 45 minutes from Chefchaouen. The drive itself was stunning, with picturesque views of the Moroccan landscape. As we ascended into the Rif Mountains, the air grew crisper and the scenery more dramatic. I was glad I packed a light jacket; the weather can be unpredictable, even in October.

The hike to the waterfalls was an experience in itself. The trail wound through lush greenery, alongside crystal-clear streams. I was immediately grateful for my comfortable walking shoes – a must for navigating the rocky terrain. The sunlight dappled through the trees, creating an ethereal glow. Along the way, we passed local vendors selling handmade crafts and refreshing drinks. It was tempting to stop at each stall, but we pressed on, eager to reach the main attraction.
Reaching Akchour Waterfalls was like stepping into another world. The cascading water tumbled over smooth, jagged rocks, feeding into a turquoise pool. The view was simply breathtaking. I couldn't resist dipping my toes into the icy water – a refreshing contrast to the warm October air. Jean-Pierre, ever the photographer, captured the scene from every angle. We spent a blissful hour simply soaking in the beauty and tranquility of this natural oasis.
After our refreshing interlude at Akchour, we made our way back to Chefchaouen. Our next stop was Plaza Uta el Hamman, the bustling heart of the medina. This shady, cobbled square is lined with cafés and restaurants, all serving similar, but delightful Moroccan fare. It’s also where you’ll find the kasbah and Grand Mosquée.

For lunch, we chose Restaurant Lalla Messaouda, drawn in by the aroma of traditional Moroccan spices. We shared a flavorful tagine, savoring each bite as we watched the vibrant life of the plaza unfold around us. The square was a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds, with locals and tourists mingling, storytellers captivating audiences, and the melodic call to prayer echoing from the nearby Grand Mosque.

After lunch, we took some time to simply wander through the plaza, soaking in the atmosphere. We admired the architecture, browsed the artisan shops, and enjoyed a refreshing glass of mint tea at a local café. I picked up a beautiful hand-woven scarf as a souvenir, a reminder of our time in this enchanting town. Jean-Pierre, of course, was in his element, capturing the essence of the plaza with his camera.
As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Restaurant Hajji, known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made us feel right at home. We indulged in a delicious couscous dish, savoring the flavors of Morocco one last time before calling it a night. Restaurant Hajji is one of the oldest restaurants in Chefchaouen and it's still operating today. They offer traditional food like Tajine and Couscous.

Before heading back to Hotel Barcelona, we made one last stop at Sunset at sunset, a bar known for its captivating views. I ordered fresh orange juice and Jean-Pierre had a cocktail. The bar offers a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

As we sipped our drinks, we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day, a moment of pure magic that I will cherish forever.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen and the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen. I’m particularly excited to explore the Ethnographic Museum, as I’m keen to learn more about the local culture and traditions.
As I reflect on today’s adventures, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Chefchaouen. Each day here reveals a new layer of this captivating town, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
