Whispers of the Rif Mountains

Today, Jean-Pierre and I ventured beyond the mesmerizing blue alleys of Chefchaouen to embrace the raw beauty of the surrounding Rif Mountains and delve deeper into the town's history. It was a day of contrasts, from the tranquility of nature to the echoes of ancient architecture, offering a new perspective on this Moroccan gem.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant Marisco Twins. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast –beghrir (pancakes) with honey and a steaming glass of mint tea. Jean-Pierre, ever the fan of the familiar, chose a simple omelet. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day. I overheard snippets of French, Spanish, and Arabic, a reminder of Chefchaouen’s diverse appeal. As we ate, we planned our adventure to Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve.

The drive to Jebel Bouhachem was an experience in itself. The landscape transformed from the blue-washed buildings of Chefchaouen to rolling hills dotted with olive groves and small farms. The air grew crisper, carrying the scent of pine and earth. We even passed a few locals leading donkeys laden with goods, their faces etched with the stories of generations past. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of connection to this land, reminiscent of the rural landscapes of my native Madagascar.

Reaching the reserve, we were immediately enveloped by the tranquility of nature. The reserve covers a vast territory, boasting diverse species of oak and maritime pine. The trails wound through lush forests and rocky outcrops, offering panoramic views of the Rif Mountains. We chose a moderate trail, eager to immerse ourselves in the wilderness. As we hiked, we kept an eye out for the Barbary macaques and various bird species that call this reserve home.
Jean-Pierre, with his love for photography, was in his element, capturing the play of light through the trees and the vibrant colors of the wildflowers. I, on the other hand, was content to simply breathe in the fresh air and listen to the sounds of nature. We even stumbled upon a hidden clearing, perfect for a picnic. I had packed some dates and almonds from the local market, a small taste of Morocco to enjoy amidst the grandeur of nature.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet whispers of nature and the echoes of history.

After a few hours of hiking and exploration, we made our way back to Chefchaouen, our bodies tired but our spirits refreshed. The weather in Chefchaouen in early October is generally pleasant, with average temperatures around 24°C, though there's a chance of rain. Today, however, we were lucky to have clear skies and sunshine.

Our next stop was Bab El Ain, one of the main entrances to the old city. This southern gate, dating back to the reign of Muley Ali Ben Rached, led us directly into the newer part of town. As we approached Bab El Ain, the architecture immediately captured my attention. The archway was beautifully adorned, reflecting the traditional craftsmanship of the region. I imagined countless travelers passing through this gate over the centuries, each with their own stories and dreams.

We strolled through the narrow, winding streets surrounding Bab El Ain, filled with shops selling handmade crafts, spices, and local delicacies. The blue-washed walls provided a serene backdrop as we explored the myriad cafes and art galleries that lined the alleys. I couldn't resist purchasing a small, hand-painted ceramic bowl, a memento of our visit to this enchanting town. Jean-Pierre haggled good-naturedly with the shopkeeper, a skill he seems to have picked up effortlessly.

The area around Bab El Ain was bustling with activity. Locals went about their daily lives, children played in the streets, and the air was filled with the aroma of spices and freshly baked bread. It was a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and smells, a true immersion into Moroccan culture. We paused to watch a group of men playing traditional music, their melodies weaving through the narrow streets. I felt a pang of nostalgia, reminded of the lively music scene in my hometown of Miarinarivo.

For lunch, we decided to try Galitos, known for its Mediterranean cuisine. Jean-Pierre ordered a burger, while I opted for a Moroccan classic – a tagine with chicken and olives. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the warm sunshine and watching the world go by. The reviews I read were right, Galitos is worth the visit.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Al Wiam for dinner. This restaurant is tucked away in a narrow street, creating a tranquil atmosphere. I had read great reviews about it and was excited to try their Moroccan dishes. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, including Moroccan chicken, bean soup, and couscous. Each dish was bursting with flavor, a testament to the skill and passion of the chefs.

After dinner, we decided to experience Chefchaouen’s nightlife at Restaurant Bar Chaouen. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with live music and a mix of locals and tourists. Jean-Pierre ordered a beer, while I sipped on a refreshing mint tea. We enjoyed the music and the lively atmosphere, reminiscing about our adventures throughout the day.

As we walked back to Hotel Barcelona, the town was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the scent of jasmine and night-blooming flowers. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for this day, a perfect blend of nature, history, and culture. I am also grateful to be sharing this experience with Jean-Pierre, my rock, my companion, my love.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Parc National de Talassemtane and visit a scenic viewpoint []. I’m eager to see what other hidden gems Chefchaouen has to offer. Until then, I bid you goodnight from this magical blue town.

P.S. I almost forgot! I realized today that I had forgotten to pack a sun hat and an extra memory card for my camera. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!
