Ducks, Caves, and Countryside Charms

Today was a day of delightful surprises and unexpected encounters in Phong Nha. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of Montreal for a while, Jean-Pierre and I embraced the quirky side of this region, diving headfirst into experiences that will surely become some of our most cherished travel memories. It's days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the unique and authentic moments that make travel so enriching.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bamboo Chopsticks. This restaurant has become a local favorite, and I can certainly see why. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was absolutely delicious. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, while Jean-Pierre, ever the adventurous one, tried a local specialty neither of us could pronounce. The staff were incredibly friendly, offering recommendations and sharing stories about the restaurant's commitment to using locally sourced ingredients. It's wonderful to see a business so dedicated to supporting the community and promoting sustainable tourism. After breakfast, we decided to check out Lá Store - Cho thuê đồ Boho/Vintage Phong Nha - Quảng Bình. Although I didn't find anything to buy, it was fun checking out their Boho/Vintage garments.

Our first official stop was The Duck Stop, a place I’d heard whispers about but couldn’t quite comprehend until I experienced it firsthand. As someone who grew up in Miarinarivo, surrounded by the simple joys of rural life, I felt an immediate connection to this quirky farm. The Duck Stop is run by a young, inventive farmer named Tran Van Quynh, who transformed his family farm into a unique attraction. As we approached, we were greeted by a flurry of feathered friends – over 120 ducks, all seemingly eager to make our acquaintance.

I have to admit, I was a bit hesitant at first. I’m used to wildlife conservation in a more hands-off way. But the ducks were so friendly and well-cared for that my apprehension quickly faded. The main attraction, of course, is the “duck massage.” We sat down, and a guide threw food on our feet, which led to the ticklish sensation of ducks nibbling at our toes. Jean-Pierre burst out laughing, and I couldn’t help but join in. It was such a bizarre and hilarious experience, one that I’ll never forget.

Sometimes, the most unexpected experiences become the most cherished memories.

After our duck encounter, we had the opportunity to explore the countryside and experience rural Vietnamese life. We even took a ride on a water buffalo, which was both exhilarating and humbling. It was a reminder of the simple, yet profound connection between people and nature. The Duck Stop isn't just a tourist attraction; it's a celebration of rural culture and a testament to the ingenuity of the local people. I felt a sense of pride, remembering my own roots in Madagascar, where community and nature are so intertwined. As a translator, I always seek to bridge cultures, and here, in this unassuming corner of Vietnam, I found a unique bridge between the modern traveler and the traditional farmer.

Leaving the Duck Stop with smiles plastered on our faces, we set off for our next adventure: Elephant Cave. After a quick lunch at Son Doong Restaurant, where we enjoyed a delicious set platter of Vietnamese dishes in a charming, rustic setting, we were ready to explore.

The trek to the cave was an adventure in itself, taking us through lush foliage and across rocky terrain. The December weather was mild, with temperatures ranging from 17°C to 23°C, making it perfect for hiking. The air was fresh and clean, and the sounds of the jungle filled our ears. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this natural beauty alongside Jean-Pierre.

As we approached the cave entrance, I was struck by its sheer size and grandeur. Elephant Cave gets its name from the elephant-shaped stalactites found near the entrance, as well as the fact that the man who discovered it's name meant Elephant in Vietnamese. The cave served as a stronghold for Vietnamese soldiers during the resistance war, a testament to its strategic importance. Exploring the cave, we navigated through the darkness with our headlamps, marveling at the sparkling stalactites and stalagmites. The history of the cave's formation and its role in the war added a layer of depth to the experience. It was both awe-inspiring and humbling to stand in a place that had witnessed so much history.

The hike up to the Elephant Cave was quite challenging, requiring us to clamber up steep inclines. However, the view from the cave entrance was well worth the effort. The lush vegetation framing the cave created a stunning backdrop, and the cool breeze was a welcome respite from the humidity. We explored both entrances of the cave, each offering a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape. The turtle entrance, with its jungle backdrop, was particularly enchanting.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Phong Nha, our hearts full of unforgettable memories. For dinner, we chose Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the menu was filled with traditional Vietnamese dishes. I opted for a vegan option, while Jean-Pierre chose a seafood dish. The food was flavorful and well-prepared, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure and exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Phong Nha has to offer. It's not just about the caves; it's about the people, the culture, and the unexpected moments that make travel so rewarding. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventure to the Núi Đôi Semiwild Enclosure and HaVa Valley, I'm filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. I'm particularly excited about exploring the HaVa Valley, also known as Thung Lũng Ngọc Bich, which I've heard is a hidden gem. And perhaps, we'll end the day with a drink at Dubai Pub Phong Nha, a place I'm sure has its own unique charm.

Until then, I bid you adieu from the mystical land of Phong Nha, where ducks give massages and caves whisper stories of the past.
