Uncover the secrets of Hang Va and En Cave in Phong Nha-Ke Bang. A day of adventure, local flavors, and unforgettable memories awaits!
A Day of Subterranean Wonders
Today was nothing short of extraordinary. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park continues to amaze me with its hidden wonders. After three days of acclimatizing to the serene beauty of this region, Jean-Pierre and I were ready for a more adventurous undertaking. Today, we ventured into the depths of Hang Va Cave and En Cave, a journey that tested our limits and rewarded us with sights beyond imagination. The day was a perfect blend of natural beauty, physical challenge, and cultural immersion, making it a highlight of our trip so far.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. I was particularly excited, as I had read rave reviews about their flavorful dishes and commitment to plant-based cuisine. The restaurant overlooked the river, and as we ate, we watched the local life unfold. I opted for the rainbow vermicelli salad, while Jean-Pierre chose the lemongrass chili mushrooms. Both were bursting with fresh flavors, providing the perfect fuel for our upcoming adventure. I even got to try their iced coconut coffee, which was a delightful treat. I must admit, finding such a gem that caters to our dietary preferences made me feel right at home.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off to explore Hang Va Cave. The journey to the cave was an adventure in itself. We trekked through the dense jungle, navigating rocky and slippery terrain. The landscape was breathtaking, with towering limestone karsts and lush greenery surrounding us. It felt like stepping into a different world, far removed from the bustling city life we left behind in Montreal.
As we descended into Hang Va, I was immediately struck by its unique beauty. The cave is renowned for its tower cones, rare calcite formations that stand tall in the giant gour pools. These cones, some reaching up to two meters high, are a geological marvel, and their formation remains a mystery to this day. The emerald-green waters added to the surreal atmosphere, creating a scene that felt both otherworldly and serene. Jean-Pierre, with his keen eye for detail, was in photographer's heaven, capturing the intricate details of the cave's formations.
The earth has music for those who listen.
After exploring Hang Va, we made our way to En Cave, the world's third-largest cave. The trek to En Cave was equally challenging, involving more jungle trekking and river crossings. But the reward was well worth the effort. As we entered En Cave, I was awestruck by its sheer size and grandeur. The cave is massive, with sunlight filtering through the upper entrance, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.

Inside En Cave, we found a campsite nestled beside a lazy river. It was a surreal experience to be camping in such a vast and ancient space. The porters, who were local jungle men, prepared a delicious dinner for us. As we ate, we shared stories and laughter with our fellow travelers, forging bonds that transcended language and culture.
One of the highlights of En Cave was swimming in the emerald-colored underground pool. The water was cool and refreshing, providing a welcome respite from the humid jungle air. As I floated in the pool, gazing up at the towering cave ceiling, I felt a sense of peace and connection to nature that I rarely experience in my everyday life. It was a moment I will cherish forever.
After our subterranean adventures, we resurfaced, ravenous. Lunch at The Villas Restaurant was a welcome treat. This charming eatery, nestled along the Son River, is known for its simple yet elegant dining style. Jean-Pierre had heard tales of their Victory Road Burger, an Aussie-style burger with beetroot and egg, and he simply had to try it. I opted for the prawn and squid salad with Asian herbs. Both dishes were delicious, and the beautiful river views added to the dining experience.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind at the Phong Nha Rooftop Bar. From there, we enjoyed breathtaking views of the surrounding limestone mountains as we sipped on refreshing cocktails. We reminisced about our incredible day, marveling at the wonders we had witnessed and the challenges we had overcome. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and discovery.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we made a pit stop at Jungle Boss Pub and Restaurant. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and we enjoyed a few local beers while chatting with fellow travelers. I learned that Jungle Boss also organizes tours to other caves in the area, including the Pygmy Cave, and I made a mental note to consider them for future adventures.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit The Duck Stop and Elephant Cave. I am particularly intrigued by The Duck Stop, as I have heard it offers a unique and interactive experience with the local wildlife. And of course, I am excited to explore Elephant Cave, another of Phong Nha's many geological wonders.
As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible region. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is truly a treasure trove of natural beauty, and I feel privileged to be able to share its wonders with you all. And who knows what other adventures await us in the days to come?
