Kyoto's Farewell Embrace

As my journey in Kyoto nears its end, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had. Today was a day of serene exploration, a gentle farewell to the ancient capital that has captured my heart. It was a day filled with spiritual reflection, natural beauty, and culinary delights, a fitting conclusion to this enriching solo adventure.

My final day in Kyoto began with a delightful breakfast at Antonio. Though I couldn't find much information about an Antonio restaurant in Kyoto, I imagined a cozy spot serving a comforting mix of Japanese and Western breakfast staples. Perhaps some freshly baked bread with homemade jams, reminiscent of the charming rustic ambiance I've come to adore in Montreal. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

With a sense of anticipation, I set out to visit the Shimogamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As I approached, the serene atmosphere enveloped me. The shrine's ancient trees whispered tales of centuries past, and the gentle sound of the Mitarashi River created a soothing backdrop. I learned that every year on March 3rd, a Nagashi-bina (doll-floating) ritual is held here. Small dolls are placed on boats made of straw and floated down the Mitarashi River in order to pray for the health of children. While I missed the festival by a week, the air still felt imbued with a sense of purification and hope.

The essence of travel lies not in the destinations we reach, but in the moments that transform us.

Next on my itinerary was the Kamigamo Shrine, another UNESCO World Heritage site, and a place of profound historical significance. As I wandered through the grounds, I was struck by the harmonious blend of nature and architecture. The shrine's vermilion gates and fences stood out vibrantly against the natural wood of the buildings. I discovered that Kamigamo Shrine, like Shimogamo Shrine, conducts restorations every twenty-one years in a process called shikinen sengū, representing renewal. Also, March 3rd is the day of the Peach Blossom Ritual (Tōka Jinji).

From the spiritual sanctuaries of the shrines, I ventured into the tranquil embrace of the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. As the oldest public botanical garden in Japan, it was established in 1924. I was eager to immerse myself in the beauty of nature, especially with the promise of cherry blossoms in the air. The gardens boasted an impressive collection of 12,000 varieties of plants and 200 types of sakura. Although the cherry blossom season was just beginning, with the best viewing time estimated to be later in March, there were hints of the spectacle to come. I strolled through the meticulously manicured landscapes, breathing in the fresh air and admiring the diverse flora. The Kyoto Botanical Gardens offer a serene escape from the bustling city, a place to reconnect with nature and appreciate its beauty.

Lunch beckoned, and I found myself at The Cellar Kyoto, a restaurant promising a unique dining experience. The Cellar Kyoto offers a hidden and private atmosphere where guests can enjoy Japanese cuisine with carefully selected ingredients. The restaurant is known for its private rooms, which include a couple's room, a hidden room with sofa seating, and a brick-walled room that can be entered through the wine cellar. I savored the flavors of the dishes, appreciating the artistry and dedication that went into each creation. It was a culinary journey that perfectly complemented the day's exploration.

As evening approached, I prepared for my farewell dinner at Nishikawa. Gion Nishikawa is located near Yasaka Shrine and Kodaiji Temple along the picturesque Shimokawara-dori of Kyoto. The restaurant is known for its exquisite Kyoto dining experience. With a chef who embodies the service spirit, putting guests' comfort first in a setting of beautiful teahouse architecture and wowing them with delicious cuisine, Gion Nishikawa offers an exquisite Kyoto dining experience. I indulged in a multi-course meal, each dish a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. The flavors were complex and nuanced, a reflection of Kyoto's rich culinary heritage. It was a fitting end to my gastronomic adventures in Japan.

To cap off my final night, I decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife at Bar Fishbowl. Bar Fishbowl is a western bar that has some excellent Japanese whiskeys and craft beers. I enjoyed a meticulously crafted cocktail, savoring the moment and reflecting on my journey. The bar's atmosphere was lively and welcoming, a perfect place to unwind and connect with fellow travelers.

As I sit here, penning these thoughts, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had in Kyoto. This solo journey has been a transformative experience, allowing me to connect with a new culture, explore my own boundaries, and discover a deeper appreciation for the world around me. I will carry the memories of Kyoto with me, cherishing the moments of serenity, beauty, and cultural immersion. While my time in Kyoto has come to an end, I know that this is not goodbye, but rather au revoir. I hope to return someday, perhaps with Jean-Pierre, to share the magic of this enchanting city with him. Until then, I will continue to explore the world, seeking new adventures and sharing my stories with you.

Tomorrow, I embark on my journey back to Montreal, carrying with me the cherished memories of Kyoto. I'm already looking forward to sharing these stories with Jean-Pierre and planning our next adventure together. Though I’m a bit sad the trip is over, I’m excited to return home, and perhaps try out some new Malagasy-inspired dishes for my family, inspired by the incredible flavors I experienced here.

This trip has reinforced my belief in the power of solo travel to broaden one's horizons and foster personal growth. Kyoto, with its timeless elegance and cultural richness, has left an indelible mark on my soul. Thank you for joining me on this incredible journey. À bientôt!
