Finding Peace and Art in Pelion's Embrace

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Pelion, a region that continues to surprise and enchant. From tranquil squares to vibrant art stores and delightful culinary experiences, every moment felt like a step deeper into the soul of Greece. It's amazing how a single day can offer so much variety, leaving you with a sense of fulfillment and a longing for more.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Armonia Restaurant in Agios Ioannis. The restaurant, a traditional family establishment, was just what we needed to fuel up for the day. I opted for a classic Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, while Jean-Pierre chose a savory spanakopita. Sipping our coffees, we enjoyed the view of the Aegean Sea, the gentle sound of the waves providing a soothing backdrop to our conversation. It's moments like these, sharing simple pleasures with friends, that make traveling so rewarding. We made plans for tomorrow, excited to explore the Clock Tower and the Home of Alexandros Papadiamantis.

After breakfast, we set off to explore the Sycamore of Peace Square. Located in Makrinitsa, the square is known for its ancient sycamore tree, a symbol of peace and tranquility. As we walked through the cobblestone streets, we admired the traditional stone houses that surrounded the square. The village is known as the Balcony of Pelion offering stunning views of Volos. The air was filled with the scent of wildflowers and the distant sound of goat bells. I took a moment to sit on a bench under the shade of the sycamore, closing my eyes and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was a perfect spot for reflection and a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to Mediterraneo Art Store. Located in Ag. Kiriaki, this charming gift shop is filled with handmade crafts and artworks. As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by a warm atmosphere and the scent of local artistry. The store features an array of unique items, from intricate ceramics to beautifully crafted textiles, all showcasing the rich heritage of Pelion. I was particularly drawn to a set of hand-painted ceramic bowls, each one depicting scenes from Greek mythology. Jean-Pierre, on the other hand, was fascinated by a collection of copper items, crafted using traditional techniques. We spent a good hour browsing the store, chatting with the knowledgeable staff, and learning about the local artisans. In the end, I purchased the ceramic bowls, while Jean-Pierre opted for a small copper pot, a reminder of our time in Pelion. Shopping local is something I always try to do, as it feels good to support the community and take home a piece of the region's culture.

For lunch, we drove to Polydroso restaurant in Pouri. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through narrow mountain roads with breathtaking views at every turn. The restaurant is run by a talented couple who cultivate and prepare most ingredients themselves. As we sat at our table, overlooking Skiathos and Skopelos, we savored authentic Greek flavors crafted from local ingredients. I ordered the lamb souvlaki, while Jean-Pierre chose the spetzofai, a traditional Pelion dish made with sausage and peppers. The food was delicious, the service exceptional, and the ambiance incredibly romantic. It was the kind of place where you could easily lose track of time, savoring each bite and enjoying the company of good friends. We chatted about our favorite moments from the trip so far, laughing and reminiscing about our adventures.

In the afternoon, we decided to explore some of the activities Pelion has to offer. We discovered that Pelion Activities offers a variety of guided tours, including boat trips to sea caves, sea kayaking adventures, and hiking tours. Though we didn't have time for a full tour today, we made a mental note to consider one for our next visit. Instead, we opted for a short hike through a nearby forest, following a well-marked trail that led to a hidden waterfall. The sound of the water cascading down the rocks was incredibly soothing, and the cool mist provided a refreshing respite from the afternoon heat. As we hiked, we spotted various wildflowers and birds, immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of Pelion.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to O Christos for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Greek cuisine and warm hospitality. We sat at a table overlooking the sea, watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange and pink. I ordered the grilled octopus, while Jean-Pierre chose the moussaka, both dishes bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was lively and festive, filled with the sounds of laughter and music. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a celebration of friendship, culture, and culinary delights.
