Finding Peace in Portaria's Panorama

Today was a day of simple pleasures, the kind that fills your soul and makes you appreciate the beauty of the world. Jean-Pierre and I, along with our friends, set out to explore more of Pelion, and it turned out to be a perfect blend of scenic views, natural springs, and delicious food. It was a day to remember, filled with laughter, good company, and the stunning landscapes of Greece.

Our first stop was the View point Portaria. The drive up was an experience in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the Pagasetic Gulf. When we arrived, the view was nothing short of breathtaking. The panoramic vista stretched out before us, showcasing the rolling hills, quaint villages, and the sparkling sea in the distance. I couldn't resist snapping dozens of photos, trying to capture the essence of the moment. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine trees and wildflowers. It was the perfect spot to take a deep breath and just soak it all in. I felt a sense of peace wash over me, a feeling that's all too rare in our busy lives back in Lyon. I am glad I remembered to bring my camera, I would have been gutted if I hadn't.

From there, we ventured to the Spring Of Manas. This enchanting oasis is nestled in the village of Portaria, and it felt like stepping into a different world. The spring is surrounded by lush greenery, with towering trees providing shade and a sense of tranquility. The sound of the crystal-clear water flowing over the rocks was incredibly soothing. We spent some time exploring the area, taking leisurely strolls along the paths that meandered through the landscape. The spring also serves as a gateway to various hiking trails, but we decided to save those for another day. Instead, we found a peaceful spot by the water and simply enjoyed the serene ambiance. It was a refreshing escape, a chance to connect with nature and appreciate the simple beauty of the natural world.

By lunchtime, we were all feeling a bit peckish, so we headed to Meintani (Niki's Taverna) for breakfast. I know, breakfast for lunch sounds a bit odd, but we had heard such great things about this place that we had to try it. Located in Zagora, the taverna is known for its traditional Greek dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Mrs. Niki, the owner, focuses on quality and the use of free-range products. The taverna itself is cozy and inviting, with a rustic decor that adds to its charm. We ordered a variety of dishes, including some perfectly cooked fish, fresh salads, and savory lamb. Everything was delicious, bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. The house wine was also a hit, complementing the meal perfectly. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was a delightful culinary experience, a true taste of Greece.

After our late breakfast, we made our way to Agora 1955 for lunch. This deli shop and cafe in Portaria is a gem, offering a unique gastronomic experience. The Karaiskou family, who also owns Karaiskos Farm, runs the establishment. Agora 1955 focuses on highlighting quality products from Thessaly, working with small and large producers to showcase the region's culinary treasures. The building itself has a retro charm, with stone and wood elements that create a warm and inviting atmosphere. We enjoyed some handmade pies, fresh salads, and local wines in the flowery courtyard. I also couldn't resist trying their famous donuts, which were warm, musky, and covered in Greek flower honey. It was a truly delightful lunch, a celebration of local flavors and traditions.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a pit stop at ooh la la breezy bar. Located in Volos, this lively grill bar is known for its warm atmosphere and delectable cuisine. Although Volos is a bit of a drive from where we were, we figured it was worth it. The bar features a diverse menu of grilled dishes, from succulent meats to fresh seafood, all crafted with care. The inviting layout makes it an ideal spot for casual gatherings, and the bar operates late into the night. We enjoyed some refreshing cocktails and soaked in the vibrant energy of the local scene.
