Pelion's Peaks and Hidden Havens
Today was a day of remarkable contrasts, showcasing the diverse beauty of Pelion. We journeyed from the heights of a ski center to the quaint charm of a traditional village, experiencing the region's varied landscapes and authentic culture. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the unexpected discoveries and the blending of experiences into a rich tapestry of memories.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Salkimi in Milies. This tavern is renowned for its traditional Greek breakfast, and it certainly didn't disappoint. Antonis, who runs the tavern with his mother, welcomed us with a warm smile and told us the story behind the name Salkimi. It refers to the Glyssina plant, which means 'grape bunch' in Asia Minor, and the tavern's decor reflects this with beautiful paintings and a cozy atmosphere. I opted for the omelette with wild asparagus, while Jean-Pierre went for the local sausage. Both were absolutely delicious, providing the perfect fuel for our day of exploration. It's funny, I sometimes forget my travel adapter, but I never forget to try the local cuisine!
With our appetites sated, we set off for the Pelion Ski Centre. Now, I know what you're thinking: a ski center in September? While skiing wasn't on the agenda, we were eager to experience the mountain views and explore the area. The drive up was breathtaking, with winding roads offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. As we climbed higher, the air grew crisper, and the landscape transformed into a tapestry of green and gold. Even without snow, the Pelion Ski Centre was stunning. We hiked around the area, taking in the panoramic views that stretched from the Aegean Sea to the Pagasetic Gulf. The fresh mountain air invigorated us, and we felt a sense of awe at the natural beauty surrounding us. I could only imagine what it would be like during the winter months, with skiers carving down the slopes and the mountain blanketed in white.

Sometimes, the most memorable moments are the ones you least expect.
After our mountain adventure, we decided to head to Manolas, a charming village nestled on the coast. The drive down from the mountains was just as scenic, with glimpses of the sea peeking through the trees. Manolas is a small fishing village, and as we arrived, we were greeted by the sight of colorful boats bobbing in the harbor and the sound of seagulls overhead. We strolled through the village, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking up the laid-back atmosphere.

For lunch, we stopped at 1701 Wine Restaurant, a local gem that had been recommended to us. The restaurant had a lovely outdoor seating area with views of the sea. We shared a selection of local mezes, accompanied by a crisp white wine. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the atmosphere was relaxed and convivial. I tried some local seafood and Jean-Pierre enjoyed a local cheese. It was the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures of Greek village life. The flavors of the fresh seafood and local wine were a delight!

In the afternoon, we indulged in a bit of retail therapy at Botanothēkē. This charming shop offered a delightful array of local products, from handmade soaps and herbal remedies to traditional sweets and preserves. I picked up a few souvenirs for my friends back in Lyon and a small bottle of local olive oil to remind me of Pelion's unique flavors.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Dovas Home Cooking for dinner. This family-run restaurant is known for its authentic Pelion cuisine and warm hospitality. We sat at a table on the terrace, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the twinkling lights of the village. The menu featured a range of traditional dishes, and we opted for the 'Hunkar Begendi' and 'Gulbassi', which were both cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, and we felt like we were dining in someone's home. It was the perfect end to a day of contrasts, showcasing the diverse beauty and charm of Pelion.

Tomorrow, we're planning to ride The Little Train of Pelion and visit Saint Konstantinos Park. I'm particularly excited about the train ride, as it promises to be a scenic journey through the heart of Pelion. I'm also looking forward to exploring Saint Konstantinos Park, which I've heard is a beautiful green space with stunning views of the coastline. And, of course, we'll be sure to sample some local cuisine along the way. Jean-Pierre is already eyeing Venezia Pizza Restaurant for breakfast!
