Exploring the Hidden Gems of Pelion, Greece with Friends
Day 7: A Whistle-Stop Tour Through Pelion's Past and Present
All aboard for a scenic ride on the Little Train of Pelion, followed by coastal charm and culinary delights in a seaside paradise.
Riding the Rails and Reveling in Coastal Views
Today was a delightful mix of old-world charm and seaside relaxation. Pelion continues to surprise me with its diverse offerings, from historical railways to vibrant coastal life. I am so glad I decided to come here with my friends, and I can't wait to share all about it!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Venezia Pizza Restaurant. I know, I know, pizza in Greece? But sometimes you just need a little taste of home, even when you're trying to immerse yourself in a new culture. Plus, the reviews were great. It was just the fuel we needed for our morning adventure: The Little Train of Pelion.
Ride the historic Little Train of Pelion through stunning landscapes, connecting charming villages and offering breathtaking views of Greece.
The Little Train of Pelion, or “Moutzouris” as the locals affectionately call it (meaning “being covered with coal dirt”), is a narrow-gauge railway that winds its way through the mountains. It was constructed between 1894 and 1903 and played a vital role in connecting the villages of Pelion. The train itself is a marvel, with its vintage carriages and the charming whistle that announces its departure. The rhythmic sound of the rails and the stunning views created a sensory experience that took us back in time.
As the train chugged along, we were treated to breathtaking glimpses of gorges and the Aegean Sea. The open windows allowed us to feel the fresh mountain breeze and inhale the scent of the trees. I couldn't help but think of Jean-Pierre back in Lyon. He would have loved this! He’s always been fascinated by trains and railways, and I made a mental note to bring him here someday. I also thought about my dad, who loved trains as well. I wish he could have experienced this with me.
The Little Train of Pelion is more than just a ride; it's a journey through history and nature, offering a unique perspective on the stunning landscapes of Pelion.
The train's route is full of architectural landmarks, including arched bridges and tunnels. The five-arched stone bridge of Kalorema was particularly impressive, as was the steel bridge of Taxiarchis, also known as De Chirico's Bridge. It’s quite a unique experience to cross a bridge that is straight while the tracks are curved. The whole experience was a photographer's dream, and I snapped away, trying to capture the essence of this historical journey.
After the train ride, we made our way to Saint Konstantinos Park. It was a welcome change of pace after the bustling train. We strolled along the waterfront, enjoying the sea breeze and the vibrant atmosphere. I took a moment to sit on a bench, watching the boats bobbing in the harbor and the people enjoying their afternoon. It was so peaceful. The park itself is lovely, with well-maintained gardens and shady trees, perfect for a relaxing walk. While there, I saw a family having a picnic, and it reminded me of simpler times growing up in Amherst. It's funny how travel can evoke such strong memories.

For lunch, we stopped at Pagasitikos Restaurant. Located right next to the beach in Kala Nera, it offered a wonderful selection of local cuisine. We sat outside, enjoying the sea view and the friendly atmosphere. I opted for the grilled sardines, while my friends tried the beef casserole and kleftiko. Everything was delicious, and the local wine was the perfect complement to our meal.

As the sun began to set, we decided to check out Grooove, a local bar known for its cocktails. The music was great, the drinks were creative, and the overall vibe was just what we needed to cap off a wonderful day. Sipping on my cocktail, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this experience. Pelion has a way of weaving its magic, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I even ran into some fellow travelers from Australia, and we shared stories of our adventures. I learned that the Cancer Council is teaming up with sports stars to promote sun protection, which is especially important here in Greece.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to explore Pelion Activities and hike the Centaurs' path. I've heard it's a beautiful trail with stunning views. We'll also be stopping by Centaurs Cave SHOP, Μαυρουδάκης Γιώργος, to pick up some souvenirs. Dinner will be at SPECIAL DELIGHT restaurant & cocktail bar, which I'm excited to try.
Pelion continues to enchant me with its blend of history, nature, and local charm. Each day brings new adventures, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds.
Before heading back to our accommodation, I took a moment to reflect on the day. I thought about how lucky I am to be able to travel and experience new cultures. It's something I don't take for granted, especially knowing that Jean-Pierre is working hard back in Lyon. I promised myself to bring him back a special souvenir from Centaurs Cave SHOP tomorrow.
And, as always, I made sure to jot down some notes in my travel journal. I want to remember every detail of this incredible journey. After all, these are the stories I'll be sharing with my readers for years to come.
Good night from Pelion! I can't wait to share more of my adventures with you all tomorrow.
P.S. I'm also thinking of picking up a Diptyque Philosykos perfume. It reminds me of the fig trees here in Pelion, a perfect olfactory souvenir.
