Blue Hues and Hidden Views
Today was all about soaking in the details of Chefchaouen, wandering beyond the main tourist paths to find those little moments that make a place truly special. It’s funny, isn’t it? Sometimes the most memorable experiences are the ones you don’t plan, the unexpected discoveries that whisper the real stories of a place.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hotel Dar Mounir, fueling up for a day of exploration. Jean-Pierre was particularly excited; he loves getting lost in new cities, and Chefchaouen, with its maze-like streets, was the perfect playground for his adventurous spirit.

Our first stop was Bab El Hammar. I’d read it was a museum that encapsulates the region's cultural heritage. It was a pleasant walk from the hotel, and the morning air was crisp and refreshing. The museum itself was small but fascinating. It offered a glimpse into the traditional crafts and artistry of the area. I was particularly taken by the intricate woodwork and the vibrant textiles on display. It's amazing how much history and culture can be packed into such a small space. Jean-Pierre, ever the history buff, was engrossed in reading every placard, while I was busy snapping photos, trying to capture the essence of each artifact.

Leaving Bab El Hammar, we wandered towards the famed Sidi Bouchouka photo spot. This wasn’t hard to find; we simply followed the stream of other tourists, all drawn to the same picturesque view. I must admit, it lived up to the hype. The vibrant blue walls, the colorful tiles, and the way the light played across the scene were simply breathtaking. It felt like stepping into a postcard. We spent a good half-hour there, taking photos from every possible angle. I even managed to get a few shots without any other tourists in the frame – a small victory in such a popular spot!

Traveling—it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
Next on our list was Plaza Mohammed V. After the bustling photo spot, this was a welcome respite. The plaza was serene and peaceful, a green oasis in the middle of the blue city. It was lovely to see locals and tourists alike enjoying the space, some relaxing on benches, others chatting and laughing. We found a spot under a shady tree and simply watched the world go by. I love these moments of quiet observation; they allow you to truly connect with the rhythm of a place. Jean-Pierre sketched in his notebook, capturing the scene in his own artistic way. He’s quite talented, my Jean-Pierre.

By this time, our stomachs were starting to rumble, so we set off in search of lunch. We decided to try Mounir Food, a place I had read about online. It turned out to be a fantastic choice. The food was simple but delicious, and the prices were very reasonable. I had a tagine with chicken and lemon, while Jean-Pierre opted for the couscous. Both were incredibly flavorful, and we devoured every last bite. The owner, Mounir, was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. He even shared a few local tips and recommendations for our remaining days in Chefchaouen.

After lunch, we strolled through the medina, eventually stumbling upon Bazar Sahara. I’m not usually one for souvenir shopping, but this place was different. It was filled with beautiful, handcrafted items, each one unique and special. I ended up buying a stunning mosaic lamp, while Jean-Pierre found a leather journal that he couldn’t resist. We spent quite a bit of time chatting with the shop owner, learning about the artisans and the stories behind the crafts.

For dinner, we wanted to try something different, so we headed to Restaurant Bab Kasaba. The setting was magical. The rooftop dining area provided an enchanting panoramic view, adding to the overall charm of the place. With an extensive menu catering to diverse tastes, guests can indulge in a variety of innovative dishes while enjoying the soothing ambiance and background music. Jean-Pierre and I enjoyed the meal while soaking in stunning views of the surrounding landscape, making it an ideal spot for both lunch and dinner.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Restaurant Blue Dream for a nightcap. The restaurant is known for its inviting ambiance and also for its dedication to serving authentic Moroccan dishes made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Visitors can expect to find a diverse menu featuring traditional tagines, savory couscous, and flavorful grilled meats, all prepared with love and attention to detail. The friendly staff were eager to provide recommendations and ensure that every dining experience was exceptional. Beyond just great food, Restaurant Blue Dream captures the essence of Moroccan hospitality. We sat outside, sipping mint tea and reflecting on the day. The air was cool and still, and the stars were beginning to twinkle in the sky. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the heart of Chefchaouen, exploring the Medina, Rue Ibn Asskar, and Jamaa. I’m particularly excited to visit the Café Mundial, a bar that’s supposed to have a fantastic atmosphere. I’m also looking forward to simply wandering the streets, soaking in the sights and sounds of this magical place. I’m sure there will be many more unexpected discoveries waiting for us.
Chefchaouen has a way of getting under your skin. It’s not just the blue walls; it’s the atmosphere, the people, the sense of timelessness that permeates everything. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect from the world and connect with yourself. And that, I think, is the greatest gift of all. As we walked back to our hotel, hand in hand, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this experience. It’s moments like these that make travel so special, so enriching, so life-affirming. And I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I'm also glad I remembered to pack my reusable water bottle this time, unlike those sunglasses I forgot back in Lyon. It's the little things, really. And with that, bonne nuit from the Blue Pearl!
