Echoes of the Past, Visions of the Sea

Today was a day steeped in history and framed by the breathtaking beauty of the Argolic Gulf. Nafplio continued to weave its spell, drawing me deeper into its captivating narrative. From exploring ancient fortresses to savoring local delicacies and watching the sunset paint the sky, it was a day of simple pleasures and profound discoveries.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Nafplio Falafel. I know, I know, falafel in Greece? But after reading some online reviews, I was intrigued. It turned out to be a delightful start to the day. The falafel wrap was bursting with flavor, and the vegan yogurt sauce added a unique twist. The staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home. It's a small, unassuming place, but definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a quick and tasty bite.

Fuelled up and ready to explore, I made my way to the Fortress of Akronauplía. This ancient acropolis, with walls dating back to the 3rd century BC, is the oldest of Nafplio's three castles. As I climbed through the stone walls, I imagined the countless generations who had walked the same path. The fortress has seen so many civilizations rise and fall, each leaving their mark on its stones. Franks, Venetians, Ottomans – their influences are all visible in the architecture and the stories etched into the very fabric of the fortress.

Sometimes, the best way to understand the present is to immerse yourself in the echoes of the past.

I spent hours wandering through the ruins, taking in the panoramic views of the town and the sea. From the top, I could see the Palamidi Fortress perched high on the hill, and the Bourtzi, the sea castle, guarding the harbor. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight, a testament to the strategic importance of Nafplio throughout history. It’s incredible to think that until about 80 years ago, Akronauplía served as a prison. Now, it’s a major tourist attraction, inviting visitors to step back in time and soak up the atmosphere.

There are a couple of routes to get to the fortress. You can drive up from Staikopoulos Park, but I opted to walk up through the gate of the Castle of Toroni. The climb was a bit steep in places, but the views along the way were more than worth it. The air was filled with the scent of wildflowers, and the sound of birds chirping in the trees. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the town below.

After descending from Akronauplía, my stomach started rumbling, signalling it was time for lunch. I headed to Kakanarakis 1986, a restaurant recommended for its Mediterranean cuisine. Located on a charming street in the old town, the restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I decided to try the grilled octopus, a local specialty, and it was absolutely divine. The octopus was tender and flavorful, perfectly complemented by a squeeze of lemon and a drizzle of olive oil. The service was attentive and friendly, making for a truly enjoyable dining experience.

In the late afternoon, I strolled along the waterfront towards the Nafplio Lighthouse. The lighthouse, standing proudly at the edge of the harbor, has served as a beacon for sailors for generations. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The lighthouse, silhouetted against the fiery sky, made for a truly magical scene.

I sat there for a long time, watching the sunset and listening to the gentle lapping of the waves. It was a moment of perfect serenity, a reminder of the simple joys in life. As someone who works as a freelance translator, these moments of peace are invaluable, allowing me to recharge and reconnect with myself.

For dinner, I chose To Teloneio, a restaurant known for its fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes. Situated right on the promenade, the restaurant offered stunning views of the harbor. I started with a classic Greek salad, followed by grilled sardines, a local delicacy. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. Live music filled the air, adding to the festive ambiance.

Before heading back to Amymone and Adiandi, I decided to check out Petrino Bar Nafplio. It was a Sunday night, so it wasn't too crowded, but there was still a good vibe. I ordered a cocktail and sat at the bar, soaking up the atmosphere. The bartender was friendly and chatty, sharing stories about the town and its history. It was a great way to end the day, connecting with the local culture and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere of Nafplio.

As I walked back to my hotel, the streets were quiet and peaceful. The moon cast a silvery glow over the town, highlighting the ancient buildings and cobblestone streets. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this beautiful place. Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore the Mycenean Acropolis of Tiryns and relax on Myli Beach. It’s going to be another day of discovery, and I can’t wait to see what awaits me.

I must remember to buy a Greek phrasebook tomorrow! I completely forgot to pack one, and while many people speak English, it would be nice to know a few basic phrases. A portable phone charger would also be useful, as I've been using my phone a lot for navigation and photos.

Nafplio continues to charm me with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a place where you can lose yourself in the past, while still enjoying the comforts and pleasures of the present. If you're looking for a destination that offers something for everyone, look no further than this coastal gem in Greece. It’s a solo journey, but every corner turned feels like a shared experience with those who have walked these paths before me.
