Wandering Through History
Today was a day of gentle exploration and quiet reflection in Nafplio. I let the town's rhythm guide me, discovering hidden corners and soaking in the atmosphere. It's amazing how a simple walk can reveal so much about a place and its people, and I was eager to uncover more of Nafplio's story.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Misirlou. I opted for a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, a simple yet satisfying start. The cafe was already buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day. As I savored each spoonful, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this beautiful town. It reminded me of those cozy mornings in Amherst, where the world seemed to slow down just enough to appreciate the small things. I made a mental note to try recreating this breakfast back in Lyon for Jean-Pierre; he'd absolutely love it. He always appreciates when I bring a little piece of my travels back home.
With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I set out to explore the Arvanitia Walking Area. The sun was shining, and a gentle breeze rustled through the trees as I began my stroll. The path wound along the coast, offering stunning views of the Argolic Gulf. I paused frequently to take photos, capturing the turquoise waters and the rugged coastline. The air was filled with the scent of wildflowers and the sound of waves crashing against the rocks. It was pure bliss. I read that the beach was once known as the Men's Place, where only men were allowed to swim. It's incredible how much things have changed! Now, it's a welcoming spot for everyone, and I saw families, couples, and solo travelers all enjoying the beach.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in discovering new perspectives.
As I continued my walk, I couldn't help but think about Jean-Pierre and how much he would have enjoyed this view. We've always loved coastal walks, and this one was particularly special. I imagined us holding hands, breathing in the fresh sea air, and marveling at the beauty of nature. Even though I was traveling solo, I felt his presence with me, a comforting reminder of our shared adventures. Perhaps next time, I'll convince him to take a break from his coding and join me in Greece.
Next on my itinerary was the Church of Saint Spyridon. Tucked away in a small square in the Old Town, this church holds a significant place in Greek history. As I approached the entrance, I noticed the bullet hole in the wall, a stark reminder of the assassination of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of Greece. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the solemn atmosphere. The walls were adorned with Byzantine icons and paintings, their colors still vivid despite their age. I lit a candle and took a moment to reflect on the events that had taken place within these walls. I learned that the church was originally built in 1702, financed by the Nafplion Brotherhood of Orthodox Greeks. It's amazing how this church has witnessed so much history, from Venetian rule to Ottoman occupation to the birth of modern Greece. I even spotted a Star of David on the floor, an unusual symbol for an Orthodox church, and a testament to the diverse influences that have shaped Nafplio's culture.

For lunch, I decided to try Taverna Vyzantio, a charming spot known for its traditional Greek cuisine and Byzantine-inspired decor. I ordered the moussaka, a classic dish of eggplant, potatoes, and meat sauce topped with béchamel. It was absolutely delicious, the flavors rich and comforting. The taverna had a lovely, rustic ambiance, with outdoor seating surrounded by colorful bougainvillea. The staff was warm and welcoming, making me feel right at home. I read some reviews that praised the taverna's reasonable prices and traditional Greek dishes. It definitely lived up to the hype! It felt like stepping back in time, and I could almost imagine myself in an old Greek film.

After lunch, I decided to do some shopping. I stumbled upon Nafplia Bookstore, a small but well-stocked shop with a wide selection of books in various languages. As someone who loves linguistics, I was immediately drawn to the shelves filled with dictionaries and language guides. I ended up buying a Greek phrasebook, hoping to improve my conversational skills. The staff was friendly and helpful, offering recommendations and sharing their love of books. I was reminded of my days in Amherst, browsing the shelves of our local bookstore, lost in the world of words. It's funny how a simple bookstore can evoke such strong memories.

As the afternoon wore on, I made my way to 3SIXTY Grill Dining | Wine Bar for dinner. This upscale restaurant offered a modern twist on Greek cuisine, with an impressive wine list to match. I decided to try the grilled octopus, a local specialty, and a glass of crisp white wine. The octopus was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, and the wine was a perfect complement. The atmosphere was sophisticated and elegant, a stark contrast to the rustic taverna where I had lunch. It was nice to experience both sides of Nafplio's culinary scene. I read that the restaurant is known for its premium meats and grilled specialties, and I can see why. The service was attentive and professional, making me feel like a VIP.

Before heading back to the hotel, I took a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, watching the sunset over the Argolic Gulf. The sky was ablaze with color, the hues of orange and pink reflecting on the calm waters. It was a perfect end to a perfect day. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Fortress of Akronauplía and the Nafplio Lighthouse, eager to discover more of this town's hidden gems. I'm also thinking of checking out Petrino Bar Nafplio for a late-night drink. I'm determined to make the most of my time here, soaking in every moment and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
As I walked, I thought about how much I've grown since moving to Lyon. Living in a new country has pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, to embrace new experiences, and to appreciate the beauty of different cultures. This solo trip to Nafplio is just another chapter in my journey of self-discovery, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings. This trip is also making me realize how much I miss Jean-Pierre. I think I will plan a trip for us to come back to Greece together.
Back at Amymone and Adiandi, I settled into my cozy room, feeling grateful for the day's adventures. I opened my travel journal and began to write, capturing the memories and emotions that had filled my heart. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow would bring even more discoveries and unforgettable moments.
