Underground Wonders and Culinary Delights

Today was a day of contrasts, venturing from the depths of the earth to the heights of gastronomic pleasure. It’s funny how travel can surprise you; I expected Nafplio to be all about the coast, but the inland holds just as many treasures. Today was a testament to that, filled with unexpected beauty and delightful tastes.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kalimera. I opted for a traditional Greek breakfast of spinach and feta pie, paired with a strong Greek coffee. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The flower-adorned fence and the friendly staff made it a welcoming start to the day.

With a satisfied stomach, I set off to explore the Kapsia Cave, located a short drive from Nafplio. The drive itself was scenic, winding through the Arcadian countryside, with its rolling hills and olive groves. It was a journey into the heart of the Peloponnese.

The Kapsia Cave is located about 15 kilometers from Tripoli and near the village of Kapsia. Experts consider it one of the ten most remarkable caves in Greece. As I approached the entrance, I was struck by the unassuming steel door set into the mountainside. It felt like stepping into another world. The cave was discovered in 1887 by a French archaeologist, Gustave Fougères, during excavations in ancient Mantineia. It wasn't long before scientists began exploring the passages and rooms, discovering a complex system within the mountain.

After purchasing my ticket, I joined a guided tour, eager to explore the depths of this natural wonder. As the guide opened the steel door, we entered a short, brightly lit corridor, which was then sealed behind us by another steel door. It was a peculiar experience, creating a sense of anticipation and mystery. Once inside, the temperature dropped noticeably. I was glad I had remembered to bring a jacket.

The cave opened up into a series of chambers adorned with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. The formations were illuminated, creating a mesmerizing display of colors and shadows. Our guide explained that the cave is part of a complex system of sinkholes and underground rivers, which contribute to its unique geological features. Human bones and clay utensils have been found inside the cave, suggesting that it was inhabited in ancient times. In fact, the cave has a long history that goes back to the 4th and 5th centuries BC.

The Miracles room presents the rarest colouring of lithic material of any other known Greek cave. Reds of fire, yellows of ochre and greenish-blue mixed with the off-white of stalactites, offer a unique spectacle of natural art.

I was particularly captivated by the Miracles room, which boasts the rarest coloring of lithic material of any known Greek cave. Reds, yellows, greens, and blues mixed with the off-white of the stalactites created a breathtaking spectacle of natural art. It felt like being inside a living painting, with each formation telling a story millions of years in the making.

Our guide shared fascinating details about the cave's history and geology. He explained how the stalactites and stalagmites are formed over centuries by the slow dripping of mineral-rich water. He also pointed out areas where ancient floods had left their mark, with layers of mud and debris covering the cave floor. I learned that the cave system is still not fully investigated and that new discoveries are being made all the time.

After exploring the cave, I felt a sense of awe and wonder at the power of nature. It was a humbling experience to be surrounded by such ancient and beautiful formations, a reminder of the Earth's long and complex history.

Leaving the cool depths of Kapsia Cave, I was ready for a change of scenery and a taste of local flavors. I drove to the nearby region of Nemea, known for its vineyards and wineries. My destination was Lafkiotis S.A., a family-owned winery with a long history of producing premium Greek wines.

The Lafkiotis winery is located in Ancient Kleonai, in the terroir of Nemea. The family started making wine in 1963, using some of the best Greek varieties. They export wines to several countries, including Germany, the USA, and Australia. As I drove through Nemea, I was struck by the sight of endless vineyards stretching across the rolling hills. It was clear that this region was dedicated to the art of winemaking. The winery is located almost at the center of important historical and archaeological sites (Ancient Nemea, Ancient Corinth, Mycenae, Dervenakia), together making for a unique cultural landscape.

Upon arriving at Lafkiotis, I was greeted by the friendly staff and offered a tour of the facilities. I learned about the winemaking process, from the selection of grapes to the aging of the wines in oak barrels. The winery combines traditional techniques with modern technology, ensuring the highest quality in their wines.

Of course, the highlight of the visit was the wine tasting. I sampled several of Lafkiotis's signature wines, including their Agiorgitiko, a red wine made from the local grape variety. The Agiorgitiko was rich and full-bodied, with aromas of dark fruit and spice. It was a perfect representation of the Nemea terroir.

I also tasted their Retsina, a traditional Greek wine flavored with pine resin. It's an acquired taste, but I found it refreshing and unique. The resin gives the wine a distinctive aroma and flavor, reminiscent of the pine forests that surround the vineyards. I learned that the resin is collected during the grape harvest and added to the wine during fermentation.

After the wine tasting, I purchased a few bottles to take back to Lyon, a reminder of my visit to Nemea. I also bought a bottle of their Nemea red wine, which is aged in oak barrels to give it a deep, ruby color and a velvety taste with hints of ripe fruits and spices. I thought it would pair perfectly with a hearty dinner back in Nafplio.

With the afternoon drawing to a close, I drove back to Nafplio, eager to experience the town's culinary scene. For lunch, I decided to try Alaloum Restaurant, known for its traditional Greek cuisine and breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. The restaurant is located on a hillside above the town, offering panoramic views of the nearby islands and the surrounding countryside.

The menu at Alaloum is inspired by traditional Greek cuisine, with a focus on fresh ingredients and simple, flavorful dishes. I ordered the grilled seafood, which was cooked to perfection and served with a side of roasted vegetables. The atmosphere at Alaloum is warm and welcoming, with friendly staff and a relaxed, casual vibe. I savored every bite, enjoying the stunning view and the gentle sea breeze.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Aiolos Tavern for dinner. This charming family-run restaurant is tucked away in a quiet corner of the city and is a true hidden gem. The tavern is known for its authentic Greek cuisine, warm hospitality, and cozy atmosphere. I chose to sit outside, in the alley paved with checkered tablecloths. I felt right at home.

I started with the fava, a traditional Greek dip made from yellow split peas. It was served with warm pita bread and a drizzle of olive oil. For my main course, I ordered the moussaka, a layered casserole made with eggplant, ground lamb, and béchamel sauce. It was rich, flavorful, and comforting, the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

The owner of Aiolos Tavern, Helen, came over to chat with me during my meal. She shared stories about her family and the history of the restaurant. She told me that the tavern has been in her family for generations and that they are committed to preserving traditional Greek recipes and flavors. I felt like I was dining in someone's home, surrounded by warmth and hospitality.

As I finished my meal, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible day I had experienced. From the depths of Kapsia Cave to the heights of Nemea's vineyards and the culinary delights of Nafplio, it was a day filled with discovery and delight. I realized that Nafplio is more than just a coastal gem; it's a gateway to the rich history, culture, and natural beauty of the Peloponnese.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Nafplio itself, visiting the Clocktower and the Statue of Otto. I'm also looking forward to trying some new restaurants and bars, including Savouras for breakfast, Kakanarakis 1986 for lunch, and 3SIXTY Grill Dining | Wine Bar for dinner. And perhaps I'll end the day with a glass of wine at Alkioni wine bar & cellar. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

As I walked back to my hotel, Amymone and Adiandi, I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience such a diverse and fascinating region. I knew that this trip would be one I would cherish for years to come. I am looking forward to sharing more of my adventures with you all.
