Echoes of the Past
Today was a day of diving deep into Nafplio's rich history, a journey through time that left me utterly captivated. It's amazing how a single day can offer such a profound connection to the past, especially when you stumble upon unexpected delights along the way. I set out with a plan, but as always, the real magic happened in the detours and unplanned moments.
The warmth of the Greek sun greeted me as I started my day, feeling grateful for the experiences this solo trip has given me. It's hard to believe that tomorrow marks the end of my adventure here in Nafplio. I plan to make the most of my final day by taking the City Tour Happy Train, visiting the Kapodistrias Statue and doing some shopping at Papailiou - The fashion store. But first, let me tell you about today's adventures.
My first stop was Savouras for breakfast. I’d read about their lovely terrace and the promise of fresh-squeezed orange juice, and it didn't disappoint. Sitting there, overlooking the town as it slowly woke up, was the perfect way to prepare for a day of exploration. It reminded me of those slow mornings back in Lyon, sipping coffee at a local café with Jean-Pierre, watching the world go by. I made a mental note to bring him back here someday; he’d love the laid-back vibe and the delicious food.

Fueled up and ready, I headed towards the Clocktower of Nafplio.
As I approached the Clocktower, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. It stands tall, a silent sentinel overlooking the town and the Argolic Gulf. Known locally as Ρολόι (Róloi), this elegant structure graces Syntagma Square, one of Nafplio's central gathering places. The Clocktower's distinctive neoclassical design, with its tall central clock face and flanking columns, is a nod to the 19th century, a period of Greek independence.

I learned that the Clocktower was built under the supervision of the Bavarian architect Franz von Klenze, whose work has left an indelible mark on Nafplio's architectural landscape. It’s said that the clock mechanism itself was a gift from King Ludwig I of Bavaria to the Greek state, underscoring the historical ties between the two regions. Climbing the spiral staircase within the tower was quite the experience. The panoramic vistas of Nafplio's terracotta roofs, the bustling port, and the endless expanse of the Argolic Gulf were simply breathtaking. I spent a good while up there, capturing photos and soaking in the beauty of the town from this unique vantage point.
I discovered that the Clocktower played a practical role in its heyday, too. Its chimes echoed through Nafplio, marking the hours and serving as a dependable timekeeper for the townsfolk. Though its significance has evolved, it remains a symbol of the town's enduring character and charm.
Leaving the Clocktower, I strolled through the narrow, cobbled streets, each turn revealing another layer of Nafplio's history. The air was filled with the scent of bougainvillea and the distant sound of the sea, creating a sensory tapestry that I knew I would carry with me long after I left.
Sometimes, the most profound connections are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners where history whispers.
Lunch was at Kakanarakis 1986, a restaurant I'd heard so much about. The elegant decoration and cozy atmosphere were immediately inviting. I decided to try their famous handmade burger, and it lived up to the hype. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but appreciate the restaurant's commitment to using pure, local ingredients. It reminded me of the small, family-run bistros in Lyon that take such pride in their culinary heritage.

After lunch, I made my way to the Statue of Otto, which stands proudly in Trion Navarchon Square. The statue is a tribute to King Otto, the first monarch of Greece. I learned that Otto arrived in Nafplio on January 25, 1833, and remained in the city until 1834. The statue not only pays homage to a historical figure but also represents Nafplio's evolution from a significant fortress town to the first capital of modern Greece.

The square itself is dedicated to the admirals who fought in the Battle of Navarino in 1827: Codrington of England, Derigny of France, and Hayden of Russia. It was constructed during the time of Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias and includes many interesting buildings and monuments. I took a moment to appreciate the neoclassical buildings surrounding the square, including the Town Hall, originally Greece's first high school from 1857.
As the afternoon waned, I sought refuge from the sun at Alkioni wine bar & cellar. This cozy spot was exactly what I needed after a day of walking and exploring. The shelves were lined with bottles of Greek wine, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I sat down at a small table and asked the staff for a recommendation. They were incredibly knowledgeable, guiding me through the extensive wine list and helping me choose a glass that suited my tastes perfectly. I ended up trying a local Agiorgitiko, a rich red wine that was both complex and comforting.

As I sipped my wine, I struck up a conversation with a local, who shared stories about Nafplio's history and culture. It was these spontaneous encounters that made traveling so special, offering glimpses into the lives of the people who call this place home. The wine, the conversation, and the cozy atmosphere created a sense of belonging that I cherished.
For dinner, I decided to try 3SIXTY Grill Dining | Wine Bar, a place that had been recommended to me by several people. Located in a beautifully renovated neoclassical mansion, the restaurant exuded elegance and charm. The menu was grill-oriented, focusing on premium meats and local ingredients. I opted for a grilled lamb dish, and it was cooked to perfection. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the accompanying vegetables were fresh and vibrant. The wine list was extensive, showcasing over 360 local wines as well as international labels. I paired my meal with a crisp white wine, and it was a perfect complement to the lamb.

It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.
As I walked back to Amymone and Adiandi, the streets of Nafplio were quiet and peaceful. The stars twinkled above, and the air was filled with the scent of jasmine. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences I had had today. From the historic Clocktower to the cozy wine bar, Nafplio had revealed its charms in unexpected ways.
