A Solo Cultural Journey through Kyoto's Timeless Charm
Day 6: Stepping Back in Time: Kyoto's Cultural Gems and Cinematic Wonders
Discover Kyoto's enchanting temples, immersive movie sets, and delightful culinary experiences on a solo adventure through Japan.
A Day of Echoes and Illusions
Today in Kyoto felt like traversing through different eras, each leaving its unique imprint on my soul. From the serene halls of a temple echoing with centuries of history to the vibrant sets of a movie studio where the past comes alive, and finally, to the exquisite flavors of a traditional dinner, it was a day of contrasts and harmonies. It reminded me why I travel – to experience the multifaceted layers of a culture and to find beauty in its every corner.
My morning began with a visit to Sanjūsangendō Temple, a place I had eagerly anticipated since planning this trip. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the main hall. Stretching impressively, it houses one thousand and one statues of Kannon, the goddess of compassion. Each statue, crafted from Japanese cypress and adorned with gold leaf, stood with a serene expression, creating a mesmerizing sight.

The history of Sanjūsangendō is as captivating as its visual splendor. Founded in 1164 by Taira no Kiyomori for Emperor Go-Shirakawa, the temple has survived fires and reconstructions, with the main hall dating back to 1266. Walking through the hall, I couldn't help but marvel at the craftsmanship and dedication that went into creating these statues, each unique in its subtle details. The sheer number of them was overwhelming, yet each one seemed to exude a sense of peace and tranquility. It was easy to lose myself in contemplation, surrounded by these silent guardians.
In the heart of Kyoto, history whispers through ancient temples and echoes on vibrant film sets, creating an unforgettable journey through time.
After spending a contemplative morning among the Kannons, I decided to dive into a different kind of historical experience at Toei Kyoto Studio Park. This isn't just any theme park; it's a working movie set where historical dramas come to life. As I walked through the gates, I was transported back to the Edo period. The detailed streets, traditional houses, and even a replica of the Nihonbashi Bridge made it feel like I had stepped into a living, breathing historical film.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the park was the chance to witness actual filming. Though I didn't see any major stars, watching the crew set up scenes and actors in costume was incredibly engaging. I learned that Toei Kyoto Studio Park has been the heart of Japanese filmmaking for decades, especially for *jidaigeki*, or period dramas. The park, established in 1975, opens its sets to the public, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the world of Japanese cinema.
I couldn't resist the opportunity to dress up in a period costume myself. For a fee, you can transform into a samurai, geisha, or ninja. I opted for a simpler experience and rented a kimono to wear over my clothes. Strolling through the park in my kimono, I felt a deeper connection to the history and culture surrounding me. It was a fun, immersive way to appreciate the artistry and attention to detail that goes into creating these historical dramas.
Before leaving the Studio Park, I explored some of its other attractions. I ventured through a ninja maze, which tested my sense of direction and agility. I also visited the haunted house, rumored to be one of the scariest in Japan, though I must admit, I found it more amusing than terrifying. The park also has various exhibitions dedicated to Japanese cinema, television, and some of its most famous actors, providing a comprehensive look at the industry's history and impact.
From the world of cinema, I moved on to another realm of Japanese ingenuity at the Kyoto Railway Museum. As someone who appreciates engineering and design, I found this museum to be an absolute delight. Opened in 2016, it showcases over 50 retired trains, from steam locomotives to modern Shinkansen bullet trains. The museum is located on the former site of the Umekoji Train and Locomotive Museum, adding to its historical significance.

Walking through the museum, I was impressed by the sheer variety of trains on display. I explored the inner workings of a retired freight locomotive and marveled at the sleek design of the Shinkansen. The museum also features a large diorama, one of the largest in Japan, where miniature trains are controlled by a skilled operator, navigating an intricately detailed landscape. It was fascinating to watch these tiny trains zip through tunnels and over bridges, mimicking real-life railway operations.
One of the highlights of the museum was the roundhouse with a turntable from 1914. This beautifully preserved structure houses Japan's largest collection of steam locomotives. For a small fee, I took a short ride on a train powered by a steam locomotive, a nostalgic experience that transported me back to the early days of rail travel. The Kyoto Railway Museum is more than just a collection of trains; it's a tribute to Japan's railway history and a celebration of innovation and engineering.
After a full day of exploring temples, movie sets, and railway history, I was ready for a culinary adventure. I started my day with breakfast at Jiki Miyazawa, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its innovative Kyoto cuisine. The restaurant itself is small and intimate, with only counter seats, allowing for a close interaction with the chef. I opted for one of their multi-course lunch sets, which offered a delightful array of seasonal dishes.

Each dish was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. The sesame tofu, a signature dish, was a standout, as was the perfectly cooked rice. Jiki Miyazawa is known for using only the freshest, highest-quality ingredients, and it showed in every bite. The chef's attention to detail and dedication to bringing out the natural flavors of the ingredients made this a truly memorable dining experience. It was a delightful start to a day filled with cultural exploration.
For lunch, I ventured to Hanasaki, a restaurant that offers affordable kaiseki meals. Kaiseki is a traditional Japanese multi-course dinner, known for its exquisite presentation and seasonal ingredients. Hanasaki provided an excellent introduction to this refined culinary art form. The restaurant is located in a quiet area of Higashiyama, near Yasaka Shrine, offering a serene setting for a leisurely meal.

I chose the 6,000 yen dinner course, which included nine beautifully presented dishes. Each course showcased a balance of flavors and textures, from the delicate vegetable tofu appetizer to the melt-in-your-mouth braised pork belly. The suimono, a clear soup served in a lacquer bowl, was a highlight, its warmth and aroma filling my senses. Hanasaki struck a perfect balance between affordability and quality, making it an ideal choice for experiencing authentic Kyoto cuisine without breaking the bank. It was a delightful midday culinary journey.
As evening approached, I indulged in a truly special dinner at Kikunoi Roan, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant specializing in Kyoto-style kaiseki. This was an experience I had been looking forward to since planning my trip. The restaurant is known for its exquisite cuisine, impeccable service, and elegant atmosphere.

The restaurant itself is beautiful, with a serene and inviting ambiance. The staff greeted me warmly and led me to my seat at the counter, where I could watch the chefs at work. The tasting menu was a culinary journey through the seasons, with each dish showcasing the freshest and most flavorful ingredients. From the delicate sashimi to the perfectly grilled fish, every bite was an explosion of taste and texture.
One of the most memorable dishes was the miso-marinated flatfish wrapped in cedar, which was cooked over smoldering coals and maple leaves. The flavors were complex and harmonious, with the smokiness of the cedar complementing the richness of the fish. The presentation was also stunning, with each dish resembling a work of art. The sommelier paired each course with a different sake, enhancing the flavors and creating a perfect harmony. The entire experience was a celebration of Japanese cuisine and hospitality.
After such an elaborate dinner, I decided to wind down with a nightcap at Concrete Bar. This cozy bar is known for its cheap drinks and friendly atmosphere. Tucked away in a small corridor, it's a hidden gem that attracts both locals and tourists. As I walked in, I was greeted by the owner, who was incredibly welcoming and made me feel right at home.

The bar itself is small but stylish, with a relaxed vibe. I ordered a cocktail and chatted with the owner and some of the other patrons. It was a great way to end the day, unwinding and connecting with people from different backgrounds. Concrete Bar is the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time, enjoying good company and good drinks. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with cultural immersion and culinary delights.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the richness and diversity of Kyoto's cultural landscape. From the serene temples to the vibrant movie sets, and the exquisite cuisine, each experience has left a lasting impression. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Ryoan-ji, Ninna-ji Temple, and Tenryu-ji, continuing my exploration of Kyoto's temples and gardens. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Kyoto Station ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store. Kyoto continues to surprise and delight me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
As I prepare for my seventh day in Kyoto, I’m reminded of a German idiom Hans often uses, “Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei” – everything has an end, only the sausage has two. It's a humorous way of saying that everything eventually comes to a close, but it also carries a sense of anticipation for what’s next. With only a few days left, I am determined to soak in as much of Kyoto’s charm as possible.
