Today in Kyoto felt like traversing through different eras, each leaving its unique imprint on my soul. From the serene halls of a temple echoing with centuries of history to the vibrant sets of a movie studio where the past comes alive, and finally, to the exquisite flavors of a traditional dinner, it was a day of contrasts and harmonies. It reminded me why I travel – to experience the multifaceted layers of a culture and to find beauty in its every corner.

My morning began with a visit to Sanjūsangendō Temple, a place I had eagerly anticipated since planning this trip. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the main hall. Stretching impressively, it houses one thousand and one statues of Kannon, the goddess of compassion. Each statue, crafted from Japanese cypress and adorned with gold leaf, stood with a serene expression, creating a mesmerizing sight.

From the world of cinema, I moved on to another realm of Japanese ingenuity at the Kyoto Railway Museum. As someone who appreciates engineering and design, I found this museum to be an absolute delight. Opened in 2016, it showcases over 50 retired trains, from steam locomotives to modern Shinkansen bullet trains. The museum is located on the former site of the Umekoji Train and Locomotive Museum, adding to its historical significance.

It was the perfect ending to a day filled with cultural immersion and culinary delights.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the richness and diversity of Kyoto's cultural landscape. From the serene temples to the vibrant movie sets, and the exquisite cuisine, each experience has left a lasting impression. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Ryoan-ji, Ninna-ji Temple, and Tenryu-ji, continuing my exploration of Kyoto's temples and gardens. As I prepare for my seventh day in Kyoto, I’m reminded of a German idiom Hans often uses, “Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei” – everything has an end, only the sausage has two. It's a humorous way of saying that everything eventually comes to a close, but it also carries a sense of anticipation for what’s next. With only a few days left, I am determined to soak in as much of Kyoto’s charm as possible.
