Quad Bikes and Tranquil Gardens

Today was a day of contrasts, a thrilling blend of adrenaline-pumping adventure and serene relaxation. Leaving the familiar embrace of the Medina, my friends and I ventured into the rugged landscapes surrounding Marrakech, seeking a different perspective on this captivating city. We traded the labyrinthine souks for open desert trails and found a peaceful oasis amidst the bustling city. It was a day that reminded me why I love to travel – the unexpected discoveries and the beautiful balance of excitement and calm.

Our day began, as most days here do, with a delightful breakfast at Le Nid´cigogne. Sipping on fresh orange juice and enjoying traditional Moroccan pastries, I savored the stunning view of the storks nesting nearby. Aisha would have loved seeing those birds! After breakfast, we met our guides for the morning’s adventure: quad biking!

The anticipation was palpable as we drove out of Marrakech, leaving the city's vibrant chaos behind. The landscape gradually transformed, the ochre buildings giving way to dusty plains and distant palm trees. We were headed for a Marrakech Quad Biking experience. It was a surprise I had planned for my friends, and I could tell they were as excited as I was. Having grown up in Al Ain, surrounded by desert landscapes, I felt a familiar thrill as we approached the quad biking center.

After a quick safety briefing and a chance to familiarize ourselves with the powerful machines, we were off! The roar of the engines filled the air as we navigated the rugged terrain. The Jbilets Desert was a stunning sight, with its vast expanse of rocky plains stretching towards the horizon. The wind whipped through my hair as I accelerated, feeling an exhilarating sense of freedom. I made sure to pack my keffiyeh, which proved to be useful in protecting my face from the dust. I felt like a modern-day Lawrence of Arabia!

We rode through Berber villages, catching glimpses of traditional life as children waved and smiled. The landscape was dotted with palm trees, creating a stark contrast against the arid backdrop. At one point, we stopped at a local home for a refreshing glass of mint tea. The Berber hospitality was heartwarming, and it was a privilege to share a moment with these welcoming people. Hans would have loved to discuss the engineering of their homes and irrigation systems!

The beauty of travel lies not only in seeing new places but also in experiencing new perspectives.

The quad biking adventure was an incredible experience, a perfect blend of adrenaline and cultural immersion. After a thrilling morning, we returned to Marrakech, our bodies tired but our spirits high. It was time for a change of pace, a moment of tranquility amidst the city's vibrant energy.

For lunch, we headed to Al Fassia Guéliz, a restaurant known for its exquisite Moroccan cuisine and its unique all-female staff. The restaurant was a haven of calm, with its elegant décor and soft lighting. We savored traditional dishes, each bite a burst of flavor and aroma. I particularly enjoyed the tagine, a slow-cooked stew that was both comforting and delicious. It reminded me of the flavors of home, of my mother’s cooking in Al Ain. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Al Fassia is indeed an institution in Marrakech, a place where you can experience the best of Moroccan hospitality and cuisine.

In the afternoon, seeking respite from the bustling city, we visited the Agdal Gardens. These historic gardens, dating back to the 12th century, offered a serene escape from the urban landscape. As we strolled through the orchards, the air was filled with the sweet scent of orange blossoms. The gardens were a peaceful oasis, a place to reflect and reconnect with nature.

The Agdal Gardens are a testament to the ingenuity of the ancient Moroccans, who designed a sophisticated irrigation system to bring water from the Atlas Mountains. The gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. As I wandered through the gardens, I couldn't help but think of Hans and Aisha. They would have loved exploring this tranquil oasis, discovering the hidden corners and admiring the ancient trees.

As evening approached, we prepared for our final culinary experience of the day: dinner at Le Bistro Arabe - Moroccan Jazz Restaurant. I had heard wonderful things about this restaurant, a place where Moroccan cuisine meets the soulful sounds of jazz. The restaurant was located in the heart of the Medina, a short walk from our riad. As we approached, we could hear the faint sounds of music, a tantalizing invitation to enter.

Le Bistro Arabe was a feast for the senses. The décor was a blend of Moroccan and French styles, with colorful textiles, intricate tile work, and elegant chandeliers. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with soft lighting and comfortable seating. As we settled into our table, the jazz band began to play, filling the air with soulful melodies.

The food was as impressive as the ambiance. We savored traditional Moroccan dishes, each prepared with fresh, local ingredients. I tried the preserved lemon Tagien, which was absolutely divine! The service was attentive and friendly, and the overall experience was unforgettable. Le Bistro Arabe is a true gem in Marrakech, a place where you can enjoy the best of Moroccan cuisine and culture.

After dinner, we decided to experience Marrakech nightlife at BAROMETRE COCKTAILS. I had read about its speakeasy atmosphere and innovative cocktails, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. The bar was tucked away on a side street in Gueliz, adding to its secretive allure. As we stepped inside, we were transported to another world. The décor was reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century pharmacy, with vintage bottles, ornate mirrors, and dim lighting. The bartenders were true mixologists, creating unique and visually stunning cocktails.

The atmosphere at BAROMETRE COCKTAILS was electric. The music was upbeat, and the crowd was a mix of locals and tourists. We sipped on our cocktails, savoring the flavors and enjoying the lively ambiance. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure and discovery. I must admit, the Crystal Meth cocktail was quite the experience, though perhaps a bit too sweet for my liking!

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I am reminded of the incredible diversity of Marrakech. From the adrenaline-pumping quad biking to the tranquil Agdal Gardens, from the exquisite Moroccan cuisine to the innovative cocktails, this city offers something for everyone. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my friends, and I look forward to discovering even more hidden gems in the days to come.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Musée de la Palmeraie, Art contemporain et nature and the House of Photography in Marrakech. I am particularly excited about the House of Photography, as I am eager to capture the essence of this captivating city through my lens. We will also have breakfast at Mandala Society, lunch at Rooftop Restaurant Koulchi Zine -Marrakech Medina and dinner at Dar Essalam. We will also visit Max & Jan Medina for shopping. I am sure tomorrow will bring even more unforgettable experiences.
