A Last Day in Blue

As my Moroccan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had in Chefchaouen. It's hard to believe that nine days have already passed since we arrived in this enchanting blue city. Today was all about soaking in the last moments, revisiting favorite spots, and savoring the unique atmosphere one last time. I'm so grateful I got to experience this with my friends.

Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at Casa Arina. The warm, inviting atmosphere and the aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea were the perfect way to start the day. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen (pancakes) with honey and a strong, sweet coffee. Aisha would have loved this place. It reminded me of the cozy cafes in Bamberg, where Hans and I often spend our Sunday mornings. Casa Arina is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and charming blue-hued setting. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect spot to fuel up for our last day of exploration.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue-washed walls, but in the warmth and vibrancy of its people.

After breakfast, we strolled through Plaza Mohammed V. The plaza was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the pleasant morning weather. The well-kept greenery and colorful flowers provided a serene contrast to the blue buildings surrounding the square. I took a moment to sit on one of the benches, soaking in the atmosphere and watching children play. It was a perfect spot to simply be present and appreciate the beauty of the moment. Plaza Mohammed V is a lush park that acts as a central hub, offering a green space to escape the hustle and bustle of the town. The architecture and lively street vendors enhance the charm.

Next on our itinerary was Bab El Hammar. As we approached the historic brick gate, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the rich history and cultural heritage it represented. Bab El Hammar beautifully encapsulates the region's cultural heritage. The museum showcases various artifacts, traditional crafts, and artworks that reflect the local way of life. Each exhibit vividly tells a story, allowing visitors to connect with the customs and traditions of the Moroccan people. The staff shared anecdotes and insights, enriching our visit further.

After immersing ourselves in the cultural richness of Bab El Hammar, it was time for lunch. We headed to Café & restaurant Meftah, a charming culinary destination known for its stunning views and delicious Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant features a diverse array of traditional dishes, including tagines, couscous, and fresh salads, all prepared with locally sourced ingredients. I decided to try the chicken tagine with preserved lemons, a local favorite recommended by the staff. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of savory and tangy, and the portion was generous. The friendly and attentive service added to the overall experience. Café & restaurant Meftah is known for its warm and inviting ambiance, making it an ideal spot for both casual meals and special occasions. It's a hub for socializing and enjoying the culinary traditions of the region.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we ventured into La Botica De La Abuela De Aladdin. The aroma of exotic soaps and perfumes filled the air as we stepped inside. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted soaps, solid perfumes, and skincare products. I picked up a few fragrance bars to bring back to Bamberg, a fragrant reminder of our time in Chefchaouen. The owner was incredibly friendly and helpful, offering samples and sharing stories about his craft. The shop is a scent walhalla with a variety of products and gifts. Unlike many other stores in Morocco, you're able to peacefully walk around and take your time.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Terrasse Djebli for our final dinner in Chefchaouen. The terrace offered breathtaking views of the Rif Mountains, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. The extensive menu featured traditional Moroccan dishes, and I opted for the grilled lamb, marinated to perfection and served with flavorful dips and bread. The attentive staff ensured our glasses were always full and our every need was met. The restaurant provides an inviting atmosphere where visitors can indulge in authentic Moroccan cuisine. The terrace offers spectacular views that enhance the dining experience. For those interested in local culture, Restaurant Terrasse Djebli often hosts traditional music nights.

Reflecting on our time in Chefchaouen, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we shared. From the vibrant blue streets to the warm hospitality of the locals, every moment was a treasure. I'm especially thankful for the opportunity to have experienced this with my friends. As we prepare to leave tomorrow, I know that the memories of Chefchaouen will stay with me forever. I will miss the call to prayer echoing through the valley, the scent of spices in the market, and the simple joy of wandering through the blue-washed streets. Chefchaouen, you have captured my heart.

As we head back to Germany, I'm already thinking about our next adventure. Perhaps we'll explore the Christmas markets in Nuremberg, or maybe we'll finally make it to the Tulip Festival in Amsterdam. Whatever we decide, I know it will be another unforgettable experience shared with the people I love.

Until next time, Chefchaouen. Shukran (thank you) for everything.

P.S. I almost forgot! I managed to find a travel adapter at La Botica De La Abuela De Aladdin, so at least one item from my 'Trip Essentials Forgotten' list is now ticked off. Now, if only I could find those sunglasses…
